Locks on bathroom doors

In the house we bought the 1/2 bath downstairs (which guests would use) does not have a lock on the door. I told DH that it is super important to put a lock on ASAP because I feel it's very uncomfortable when using a bathroom in a house full of people (like a party) to use the bathroom without a lock. DH thinks I'm crazy and that it's not a big deal. So who's crazy? Me or DH?

I voted yes, using your party example. I would lock if at a party but not if I was the only one visiting a friend.

Heck yes it needs a lock! I too would feel uncomfortable ANYWHERE without a lock on the bathroom door. I even lock when I am at home, although that is mainly to keep my kids from barging in on me. Some things must be left sacred!

Changing it would not be top priority but I would change it eventually.

It's such and easy fix, there should be no debate. Just buy another door nob at Lowe's and change it out. Maybe five minutes worth of work. OP, you can do this yourself and don't even have to involve DH. See how long it takes for him to notice. I am with you. I would want a lock on the bathroom door!

A bathroom door should have a lock, imho.

We don't use the locks at my house....if the door is closed, someone is in there and we leave the door open otherwise. However, I have a friend that always keeps her bathroom doors closed. So when at her house, if you don't lock the door, someone will walk right in. They all lock the door when they're using the bathroom, so they're in the habit of just walking up and trying the knob. Not cool....

As a kid I once walked in on one of my mom's friends (a guy) while he was using the bathroom, and it is still embarrassing to think about...so yeah, bathroom doors need locks.

Absolutely, get a lockable one. Just be sure to get an "internal" lock set. They will usually have a small hole in the outside knob that can be opened with a nail or small narrow object. The purpose is in the event that 1) and accident happens in the bathroom and the person cannot get to the door to open it, and 2) small children are sometimes able to lock a door but cannot figure out how to unlock it, so you need to get to them quickly.

Other than that...it's a no brainer. Always have a lock to prevent embarrassing situations. Many people also have "shy" kidneys and cannot function knowing that someone could, accidentally just walk in.

When I was a little girl one of my mom's friends walked in on me in the bathroom. I was so embarrassed. So YES! LOL ALWAYS locks.

Most people I know keep the bathroom door open unless it is in use so I have never worried about locking the door.

I do at family parties at my brother's house, my nephews I trust to knock (my brother and SIL raise them right) but my SIL's nieces/nephews...not so much.

But generally, no I don't usualy lock the door.

Do it before a party, but if your family habit is just to leave the door open when not in use, then it doesn't have to be right away.

Door locks are so simple, you shouldn't even bother with asking some one else to do it. Although if you care about the style, some of them can get a little pricey even for a simple interior door.

But, our only bathroom does not have a lock on the door. The door is original to our 100 year old house, and had a skeleton key at one time. I have no idea where the key is. We kept meaning to put a slide lock on, but just never got around to it. The rule of thumb here is if the door is closed, the bathroom is in use.

Its easy and cheap to put an interior locking door knob. I would do it myself and not involve my husband. Of course, he locks the bathroom door too so he wouldn't question why I wanted it to lock!

On the room side of the door knob you will see two screws next to the knob. Remove these two screws and take a knob to homedepot or lowes. Match the same knob style. Remove the two screws on the edge of the door (pull striker out), install the new striker bolt replacing the two screws, put the new handles back on the same way the old ones came off. 10mins top, no need to wait or discuss it, just do it yourself and be done with it. All you need is a Phillips screw driver. If you don't have one buy a set of screwdrivers when getting the new lock. Start to build your personal tool kit. I am sure you can find a video on ytube if you are concerned or have issues.
