I have asked this question before on the CP thread without great response, so here it is again...

Has anyone doing th college program lived outside of the provided housing? As in gotten your own apartment? I cannot currently find anything on the CP website but I have heard that you can petition to not live in the CP housing. :confused3 I would really like to talk to someone who has done this. I am wondering if it is feasible, if the cost of living in the area is terribly high, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated! :goodvibes

I believe that Berlioz70 will be living off Disney-property as soon as her husband moves to Orlando. I heard about that in her blog. It's definately possible!

IMHO it would be worth it (I was not a CP so dont have personal experience) because their apartments are overpriced comparative to other apartments in the area and if you get your own, you don't have to go by all their silly rules (guest rules, etc)

BUT

Only if you are going down with someone you already know. I (as a FT CM) had some NIGHTMARE experiences with roommates in Florida-who were CMs! If you landed a bad roomie in the CP housing you can easily move. Not so easy in "the real world" or outside the Disney bubble:thumbsup2

And also only if you are bringing a car :D

And do your research because my fiance was prettymuch just living with me when he was an IP and he still had to pay the rent for his housing, there was no way out of it. However I think with CPs it is possible to get out of paying it.

I can't say I would recommend living off property. By living in CP housing you get all the great benefits of the program such as free transportation to work/walmart and housing events. You also get to interact with other people, and always have plenty of friends to go to the parks with. If you're looking at living off property you may want to look into doing a Professional Internship, or even working full or part time.

Sorry but this doesn't make sense. Why would wanting to live off-property make you shy away from the CP???

That's good to know :) I wonder how difficult it is though....

Well I would be going with my BF and our 2 dogs. I could probably live separate from my BF if we could spend some nights together (dunno if that's possible) and we would see each other during the day but I can't leave the puppies behind in NY! :rotfl: But seriously, that's just mean and I would miss them terribly. I miss them after a day!

And I've definitely been through bad experiences with roommates in college, well actually my BFs roommates. Mine wasn't all that bad of a situation. Unless our current roommate is interested in doing to program it would probably just be us in an apartment if we can find one.

So sounds like it would actually be more economical to get our own apartment, thats what I was wondering. I am a little curious about how we would go about finding an apartment in Florida from NY... :confused3

I had looked into doing a PI which would actually be great for me if I could get research credits for it through my college. Although I probably won't go until after I graduate. However, I believe these are much more difficult to get and when it comes time to go I may apply for some but if I don't get them I'd still like to go!! Plus I think I might be more interested in some of the jobs offered through the CP. Plus I would probably be bring a car anyway.... So basically my plans are no where near fully thought out, still dreaming at this point.

I'm in the same situation! I plan on doing the PI soon and being from NY also I have no idea how to relocate so far away haha. I wish so badly that I could take my animals down with me to the CP but it's not possible :[

btw where in NY are you from?

I go to SUNY Fredonia, but I'm originally from Ontario NY, east of Rochester. I mean I guess you can look online... and maybe see if local papers have online classifieds. I'm also in the predicament of finding a pet friendly apartment which limits the choices. I would be nervous about moving into an apartment that I hadn't seen in person but there's no way I could make that trip! And it's not likely that we could stay in a hotel/motel while we looked with the dogs... Any other PIs deal with this problem??

hey! I used to live in Fredonia! Many years ago...did you know Fredonia was once cited on the Tonight Show as having the most bars per capita in the U.S.? :lmao:

No I did not know that, but there sure are a lot of bars :rotfl: How cool!

Just assume that you have to live on property... regardless of your situation with pets, etc. The only way to really get out of housing would be if you're married or have children with you. Even people with medical situations still live in the apartments, the housing department will just make sure their needs are met before they arrive.

Even though it's a little more expensive, I would highly encourage staying in the housing. The convenience of the location and added amenities certainly outweighs that extra cost. I have actually been talking with my husband about staying in the apartments even after he arrives because of how much easier life is here versus at another apartment.

If I do end up trying to move off, I'll let you know about the process.

Oh! I knew there were people who moved out so I had no idea how you went about this. Thanks for clearing it up I guess it's only for special situations.

I was wondering if you would have to be married or something. I just feel like I can't leave my puppy, the poor thing has separation anxiety and its taken him almost a year to realize that when I leave I will in fact be coming back. I would just feel like I was abandoning him. If it was just me and my boyfriend it wouldn't be a problem.

I guess I was just wondering, in general, how difficult it would be.

Well I guess I'll be looking into doing a PI or seasonal type thing. :sad1:

Trust me I understand how hard it is to leave both a boyfriend and your pet behind. I did the Fall Advantage CP two years ago and this past summer I spent 3 months out in Vegas. It's tough, but your pet is still like any other animal at heart. Your puppy will do fine without you for a few months...their sense of time is completely different than humans. Yes, the first couple of days might be tough on them, but they soon adjust. :)

The months fly by, and before you know it you'll be back at home! :) Good luck!!

I wouldn't be surprised if that record is now held in la Crosse, WI. I know we have the most bars on one street and the world's largest six pack.

I emailed CP recruiting about a month ago about a friend of mine who has a young child asking what we needed to do to get clearance to live off property and this is what they said in the email:

The living component of the program is not required, and any student has the option of arranging his or her own housing. Please note that our housing communities are for our program participants only, and therefore children or spouses who are not on the program are not eligible to live in our housing communities. Students electing to arrange their own housing would not need to pay the weekly housing fee.

So its definitely possible and according to this recruiting CM, you don't need special circumstances. I would go ahead and email them and just ask them what you need to do.

I've known of married couples that did the program together and they were allowed to live together in a one bedroom apartment. . .

midway through my program i came to realize there was a girl that did stock in my area that was a CP. she didn't hang out with us and none of us really even knew she was considered CP. . .she chose to live off property because she was engaged, and she wanted her fiance to live with her. or just be able to have sex whenever she wanted. . .((it's been 3 years, i don't remember exactly))

One of the campus reps from my school is doing her second college program this semester. she requested to live off property and they let her since it is her second program. i'm not sure she's a big fan, she lives really far from property and it's more expensive.

I know that if i don't get my PI and I do another CP i'm opting to live in CP housing. it's not that bad, and my boyfriend will be a CP so that'll be nice to come and go as we please.

I don't know about the dog situation, but most PIs are offered the chance to live at the Millenium apartments, next to the Millenium Mall. They are beautiful. However, you probably will share with four other roomates. They charged my son alot of money, (based on market/rental vaue of the codo), and he had to share a small room with a roomate. Two other people shared the huge mastersuite, and the 5th person got a bedroom to himself. It truly is who ever gets there first, gets first choice. So...be there early on check-in day.

At the time, the Orlando indoor football team lived at the apartments too (I can't remember their name). This place has an extensive work out room, an indoor bowling alley (like two or three lanes) and some beautiful outdoor pools, and is a gated community. Really really nice.

You will need a car if you live here. No if, ands or buts. So, you will have to drive from where ever you live. I looked into renting a car for him for the five months but the cost was ridiculous. I drove down the east coast with my son (I don't think it's good for anyone to drive that far by themselves) and fly home alone...and vice versa in May. Flew in, and then we drove home.
