Ok you guys, I found it, an amazing restaurant that is little discussed so maybe not too many people know about it but you all should try it....GRAND FLORIDIAN CAFE! DH and I loved it so much that he wants me to change my Oct dining plans around (yes again) and add it in somewhere.
If it wasnt for the rain DH and I would not have gone back to the room early, giving up our Marrakesh and searching for something else and GFC was it. We arrived at 6:40 and were seated right away (btw it was still pouring out when we left the Poly).
We were seated by the windows in the front section of the restaurant, I would say the place was half full and they were taking walk ups. We had a fantastic host that explained in great detail the menu, he was very helpful.
We decided to start with the Blue Glowtini. It was strong and delish and warm so I had to add ice to it, tasted much better after that.
Our server, Simon from the UK, was amazing, he was so attentive and informative and just a great guy. He was quick to bring out whole grain mini loaves and sourdough rolls. They came with butter topped with a vanilla lime salt. The butter was TDF, to die for, DH loved the sourdough rolls and I had half a whole grain loaf with red currants in it....the loaf is a heavy bread so I didnt want to fill up on that.
DH ordered a caesar salad, we shared it and it was fantastic. Light and super flavorful and the greens were so fresh.
I ordered the shrimp penne with prosiutto and green onions and a ton of parm cheese. This was amazing, better than the shrimp pasta dish from Spoodles I had in June and I loved that dish. There was a ton of shrimp, the sauce was light and the pasta was cooked perfectly, just enough cheese to make you giddy. DH ate some too and he loved it and he really isnt too keen on a cream sauce pasta.
DH had a tough time deciding between the pork chop or the NY strip, he literally flipped a coin and heads was the NY strip so that is what he got. It came with mashed potatoes, fresh string beans, red wine sauce and a pat of blue cheese butter. He likes his meat medium well (I like mine med to med rare) and they did a fantastic job cooking it to his liking. The food runner forgot a steak knife and our waiter was busy so DH cut it with the butter knife and it ran right through the steak no problem. This steak was so tender and flavorful even I loved it! The blue cheese butter pat did not stay on long, it melted right into the steak and omigod it was soooo good. The red wind sauce was also fantastic, it was a thicker style so it really clung to the steak well, DH asked for it on the side and not smothered on the steak.
DH licked his plate clean, I finished all but 1/4 of mine and then Simon came over to explain desserts. He brought out this sampler that was used to describe some desserts and DH said can we order that? I looked at him and said all 4? He cocked and eyebrow at me and said, What better to order to use on the Dis report? Do I have the boy trained or what?
On the lower left side is the lemon cheesecake with raspberry coulis, omigod this is so light and flavorful and fantastic and DH's favorite. On the lower right is the tiramisu with white and chocolate cream on the plate and chocolate covered espresso beans and white and chocolate spirals on the top, this was my favorite and so light and creamy and wonderful.
On the upper left is the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake with crushed hazelnuts, this was DH second fav. It was very chocolate-y and rich but still light and creamy. On the upper right is the key lime with chocolate crust and burnt (like a brulee not tasting burnt) brown sugar topping with a passion fruit coulis on the side. This was my second fav, it was tart and smooth and creamy and it lit up my tastebuds with the sharp lime taste and the rich chocolate finish.
There was a few fruit accents as well.
I am so glad that we tried this place...now DH is so excited to try all new places, we always seem to find a new jewel!
Here is the menu, again sorry for the glare, even with the flash off it keeps glaring off the glass and the bright lights.
During dinner there was a woman being wheeled out on a strecher by the pool area. The waiter said she came in from the rain, slipped on the tile and whacked her head really bad on the hard floor. I have been wearing flip flops the entire time (I dont do close toed shoes or heaven forbid sneakers) and I have been slipping and sliding all over the place....if DH wasnt holding my hand I would have gone down a lot of times. I hope that lady is ok and for everyone that is wearing slippy shoes in the rain please be careful.
