Yes! It has been an adventure and fun too!

Went tothe Golden Mickeys matinee and it was great! Loved the show.

Service has been great so far and we're due in Cozumel very late tonight. The crew will be getting some well deserved shore leaves as we stay in Cozumel over night and leave there about 8:00p.m. tomorrow. It should be nice. :)

Wonderful! I am glad the crew is getting some shore leave, and I hope all of you enjoy Cozumel. We did the submarine excursion there and it was very interesting (I wasn't sure how I felt about being enclosed underwater, but I ended up enjoying the experience).

I love the Golden Mickeys too! I don't know which one I like more, the Golden Mickeys or Dreams. Both are good, but in different ways.

Glad things are going better, enjoy the rest of your cruise and THANK YOU for checking in with us and letting us know what is happening!

Someone asked about Port Canaveral...I can't vouch for this info, but I've heard that part of the port will need to be dredged (get the sand out) and the navigational bouyes have to be repositioned. Hopefully the port authorities can get this done quickly.

I sorry to post this again. I may have missed something but has Disney said anything about Castaway Cay?

Hope you guys have a great time. Unfortunately, after a lot of hassle, trying to make it there and getting there, and lack of contact to us (good thing we had the laptop with us because we didnt' get any contact until after 10pm at night and it was only via email) we got there and decided with Ivan coming we needed to cancel (after we found out it was changed to Tuesday and they wouldn't make arrangements for us to get a room for Monday night since we were going to be displaced) we cancelled.

But wanted to tell you all to have a great time and I'm not trying to start flames again (I only read the first page and didn't want to read the rest). We are wondering how you got to port? Did DCL help provide transportation? We found out at OKW that you guys were moved to Port Everglades.

I meant to also post that my husband talked to a CM at MK yesterday and she said stopping at Castaway may be a while, I don't know exact words. If I get a chance after we get home tomorrow, I'll post and let you know.

Continue having a great cruise! What is the schedule of the various shows? Will they try to get them all in? Look forward to hearing some trip reports when you all get back.

First of all, this is NOT the weather chat room! This is DCL chat! With that said, if you live in Florida, you deal with hurricanes. If you live in Kansas, you deal with tornadoes, if you live in California, you deal with earthquakes. As for me, I live in Connecticut and deal with the winter. In fact, this past winter, a Nor'Easter hit dumping 20 inches of snow on my front porch.

So, basically, you deal with where you live the best you can. If you did not like it, you can always move.

Anyway, I believe this board is regarding Disney, am I not right. You can always go to weather.com and voice your frustrations regarding the weather.

I was supposed to sail on 9/4 as well and I did make it here to sail out on Tuesday. I have sailed the Magic twice prior to this and Disney has been first rate. Well, this time, they dropped the ball. I know they have NEVER been thru this situation before, but hey, they should of had some type of system in place in case they ever were! I mean, duh, they are located in Florida and do sail during hurricane season.

Also, as far as them changing dates and ports, etc. they had ALL my phone numbers (home, work and cell) as well as my sister's (who I was traveling with), and HER mother-in-law. Do you think at least ONE of us received a phone call at ANY of the numbers we provided DCL? NO!!!!!! Unfortunately, the only way we knew what the heck was going on was reading these DIS boards - how pathetic is that??? Also, we would have NEVER known the port was changed to Fort Lauderdale unless a man behind me in line at The Port Orleans did not tell me!! If this nice gentlemen never told me that, we would have been driving over to PC the next morning!

As it turned out, there were about 300 people at Port Orleans who were bused to Port Everglades on Tuesday morning. And guess what? DCL did not even have enough buses - and they knew the count of the people there the night before. Also, the morning we were being bused out, passengers had to take over and form people into lines and do head counts before we got on the buses. Don't you think DCL would at least of had a management rep. there to handle these matters?

I could go on and on, but I am here and enjoying myself - I am on vacation and not at work so that is a good thing. But anyway, just wanted to express to some of you the inability on our end of what occurred - and this is just the tip of the iceberg. (I could have mentioned that Port Orleans was NOT even prepared to accept any of us - oh well - maybe another story for another day!)

This is coming from a huge Disney fan and DCL fan, but maybe my last Disney Cruise - you can say what you want about sailing in hurricane season, but it does not excuse the totally unprofessional way we were handled.

Oh well, guess next vacation I will be cruising the Royal Carribean site!

Nancygop: You are right, whatever DCL's reasons were, your treatment was unacceptable and should be addressed. From what I am hearing, Port Orleans has several issues to be attended to - and not all are related to the hurricane or to DCL. I DO know of some people who WERE notified, why others were not, I sure have no idea. I know your cruise will be wonderful and hope that this fly in the ointment will not color your future vacation plans.

I am amazed at people's expectations of what should have been done! Do you realize that many cast members had to leave their own homes not knowing if they would find one when they came back, to make sure they did their job. Their job is trying to keep vacationers happy. My mom works at one of the resorts and she gets blasted from guests whenever it rains, like she could do anything about it.

Disney I'm sure was working with a short staff, getting information from other sources that probably continually changed as did the weather. No one in Florida could have predicted all that would happen in Fl last weekend.

I was on the mystery cruise a couple of years ago that went to Costa Maya and never got to Grand Cayman and we didn't have the best weather. I never expected Disney to compensate me for that, its part of vacation - weather cannot be predicted accurately.

I think you have to give Disney a break here. Why would a company who almost always goes above anyone else in the area of customer service, simply decide not to this time. Why don't you give them the benefit of the doubt, they they were trying the best they could to deal with a situation they had no control over. I'm sure things slipped through the cracks, but we're all human and that stuff just happens.

I think everyone should just be nice to their cast members and remember most of them are going above and beyond what is expected of them.

Nancygop,

RCCL was affected also. I was on the August 14th Magic. On the 13th, there was a Royal Carribean ship in Port Canaveral, scheduled to leave at 5 PM. With hurrican Charley coming, the Port ordered that the ship depart at 3. Without any notice, the ship departed, leaving about 300 people IN THE RCCL TERMINAL! They came back to the Radisson where I was staying, and they were really p****d. I'm sorry your vacation was ruined, and perhaps Disny did not do the best job possible, but this season has been the worst on record.

I've been reading and will just post what I received as my weekly newsletter about the cruise industry. It speaks for itself. Kudos to DCL and all the other cruise lines for looking out for all passengers best interests...........their safety!

"As Hurricane Frances roared across the Bahamas last week, the cruise lines prepared for a worst-case scenario in terms of disruptions to their operations. A Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 miles per hour, Frances was expected to hit Florida on Friday evening--somewhere between the Port of Miami, Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades and Port Canaveral, the three busiest cruise ports in the world--precisely as many of the ships based there were scheduled to return to disembark their passengers and embark new ones.

By Thursday morning, September 2, a steady stream of emergency announcements began to arrive in our Houston offices. The Port of Miami and Port Everglades would close on Thursday, with Port Canaveral to follow, and all ocean-going ships had been ordered out to sea. Flights in and out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale would cease during the day on Friday, with Orlando to follow. Ships at sea were being re-routed, some cruises shortened, others lengthened, and others cancelled altogether.

And the cruise lines had another problem. The Miami/Fort Lauderdale area is home to the headquarters of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Norwegian, Silversea, Costa (U.S.) and a half dozen smaller cruise lines, meaning the executives in charge of handling the emergency and the reservationists working with our company to revise so many travelers' plans were in the direct path of the hurricane. Nearly 2.5 million residents of coastal communities were ordered to evacuate, and one after another, reservations centers and headquarters went dark.

With dozens of cruises and hundreds of Vacations To Go passengers affected, our company management pitched in to help our cruise counselors contact every customer scheduled to depart during the weekend. Cruise lines stepped up to the plate, offering full refunds or future cruise credits to anyone that cancelled, and partial refunds and/or onboard credits to those who chose to fly into Florida a day or two late to take a shortened cruise.

Out at sea, ships scheduled to arrive in southern Florida on Friday or Saturday made plans to visit other ports or spend more time at sea, returning instead on Sunday. Thousands of passengers had an extra day or two added to their cruise, at no expense of course.

Meanwhile, even cruise passengers headed to Alaska or the Mediterranean were affected, as outbound flights from Florida were cancelled as well.

Then, unexpectedly, Hurricane Frances began to weaken, with highest sustained winds falling to 105 mph, and its trek toward the Florida coast slowed dramatically. As the storm stalled off the coast of West Palm Beach, estimated landfall was pushed back from Friday night to Saturday night, meaning ports and airports would be closed for an additional day, and ships at sea would spend another day waiting before they could return to Florida. Cruise passengers that had just been reaccommodated to Sunday flights and ship departures had to be moved again, to Monday. Once again, passengers had the option to cancel with full refunds or future cruise credits.

Early Sunday morning, Hurricane Frances came ashore near Stuart, FL, and was quickly downgraded to a tropical storm. Wind damage and flooding was severe, and six million people lost power. Others lost their lives, or their homes, or their businesses. The storm crossed the state and moved back into the Gulf of Mexico near Tampa, then made landfall again on Monday in the Florida panhandle.

Also on Monday, the ports and airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale reopened, but officials at Port Canaveral announced that that port would remain closed until at least Wednesday, while the Coast Guard inspected "the harbor and approaches to determine if there are any submerged or other hazards in the water and to determine what emergency dredging may be necessary." Sailings from Port Canaveral were cancelled or changed to depart from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, and some ships that left from Port Canaveral prior to the hurricane's arrival were forced to disembark their passengers in Miami or Fort Lauderdale. The cruise lines bussed arriving and departing passengers in both directions, as necessary.

While it will be some time before the full economic impact of Hurricane Frances on the cruise lines is known, it is quite clear that the storm was by far the most expensive and disruptive storm in the history of the cruise industry. Royal Caribbean alone has estimated its storm-related costs at $15 million. We've certainly never seen anything like it in the 20-year history of Vacations To Go.

And while thousands of cruisers were severely inconvenienced by Hurricane Frances, no ships or passengers were ever in danger, and it seems to me that the cruise lines made the best out of a very bad situation. For their fast response and unconditional offers of full refunds or future cruise credits, I give them an A+.

I know many readers of this newsletter were at sea during Hurricane Frances. If you'd be willing to share your experiences, please reply to this newsletter with a short recap of what happened on your cruise, for possible publication on our Web site."

This came from a website I get a weekly newsletter from.

I have to totally agree with this. The people that were not affected by this cruise really don't have a right to be telling us how lucky we are or anything like that, I'm really getting sick of hearing that. Sorry, had to post this. You DON'T know how crappy we were treated, not only no communication but when we would call for updates we were talked to rudely, even if we were being very nice and decent on the phone. I'm sorry but that is NOT customer service, especially from a company that claims they are so customer friendly. And we weren't the only people that have said how rude they were treated or talked to on the phone.

DCL also had all of our contact numbers, and when we arrived at a different destination, the whole way down, we called them with our hotel contact. Fortunately we had our laptop with us, or we would have known NOTHING - not even from Dreams. We received ONE phone call and that when the arrangements starting changing a week ago. The only other contact we got from Dreams was via email during the night after we had gone to sleep. Fortunately we got the email updates the next day, or when my husband got up in the middle of the night. We found out about the change to the cruise leaving on Tuesday by a scroll on the news screen in our hotel. If we wouldn't have had power in our hotel, we would not have known a thing.

I understand they were under a limited staff, but we weren't the only ones that didn't find out about this info. After we got to BCV on Monday, there was a lady there that was chewing out a CM (with DCL) that they weren't even notified their Wonder cruise was cancelled, they saw it on the news!!!!!! As I've said on other posts, we knew we booked during hurricane season and this could be expected but not 3 strong hurricanes in a matter of 5 weeks (this is including Ivan if it hits Florida). This is a very odd year, as has been said on many weather stations. No one could predict that the cruise lines would have this problem, one hurricane maybe, but to be dealing with 3 different ones....

To: Skyhawk

I am well aware that EVERY cruise line was affected by Hurricane Frances - that is NOT the issue. RCCL and Carnival posted a full day ahead of Disney what their new itineraries were going to be because of the hurricane. Disney did not make a decision until 8:30 p.m. the night before we were to leave our houses! And again, when we finally got to Port Orleans, we only found out about the port change because of a man behind me in line.

Totally unacceptable - One less Disney fan here.............again, RCCL here I come!

Well... hmmm.... I am currently on the Magic, on the shortened cruise... and I am upset after reading this thread... Certainly there are valid points on both sides... but, as everyone has a right to an opinion, here is mine....
I flew into Orlando airport on the red-eye friday morning, to arrive under the cut-off time for the airport closure... All the time, DCL swore up and down that nothing was changing... in fact, Port Canaveral had already announced they would be closed Saturday, and yet Disney was still telling us the cruise was going as scheduled.. the issue I have with this is that had they stepped up to the plate and made a decision like the other cruise lines had, that many of us could have avoided being in the path of the storm.... it was their lack of a solid decision that caused many of use to walk into a hurricane... Now, don't get me wrong, I still love DCL and to the first time cruisers I have met, I have said "Please give it another chance, its not normally like this." Realistically or not, I think we expect more from Disney than we do of other cruise lines, because Disney has a reputation of having their act together.... In this case they not only were they not superior, they frankly fell short of the other Cruise Lines. This was disappointing to be sure... Is it fair to hold them to a higher standard? Maybe, maybe not, but, they hold themselves out as superior, the rates they charge are higher, so, I don't think it is unreasonable... would I go on a DCL cruise again... YES, in fact i have several others already booked... do I think they could have handled it better... Yes... Are there worse things that happened in Florida than what we went through? Yes... but, each person takes their experience from their own perspective... that is natural... there is no need to flame anyone for complaining, or for feeling bad... There is no need to flame anyone here AT ALL... we are all entitled to our own opinions, you will never be able to change a person's mind by attacking them... everyone opnions are valid, so, please stop telling each other to "Stop Whining" and don't belittle someone who is upset, they are allowed to be upset... It just art of life and its what makes life so interesting... I hope you all fare well, weather in a storm, a vacation, or life... its the trials of our lifes that define our character...
Well, those are my two cents... :smooth:

I was going to stay way away from this one because I have already posted on several other threads about our experiences. I am a very optimistic person and always try to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but when people make comments about their frustrating experiences and express suggestions on how things could be done better in the future, I DO NOT consider that whining!

But I especially take offense to RDS912's comments. From what I can tell by your page, you were not on this cruise. And for those who were not on this cruise, you really cannot judge those of us who are expressing our concern and frustration. YES, we know it was not DCL's fault. It was not Florida's fault and it was not the airline's fault. However, courtesy and consideration can still be applied whatever the circumstances.

I know for a fact after conversations with more than 20 people during those 3 stressful days that none of us ever forgot what the people in Florida were going through. All of us commented on DCL's excellent ability to keep us entertained, fed and informed. I saw NO ONE actually throw any tantrums or hysterics towards Disney (only toward family members -- tensions were very high by Saturday night).

However, having been in such a tension filled situation, with stress building every time the Captain made an announcement because we never knew where we were going to be, can have a tunnel-vision effect on even the most optimistic of us. No matter how much you say we could have been worse off with destroyed homes and loss of lives, etc., at that very moment -- those jam packed stress filled, body crunching two hours that we were crammed in the hallways and Deck one trying to get off -- no, we were not thinking of how much worse off we could be. We were instead trying to protect our kids from being shoved around, our feet from being stepped on -- all while dragging our luggage through a very hot terminal with no baggage handlers because, according to a CM, they didn't show up!

Then, after waiting in line for an hour to board a bus to Orlando International, we had to endure people shoving their way to the front of the lines because they "had a plane to catch" -- and none of us did? That was the ONLY time I saw any Disney Reps lose their patience was with those people -- they were yelling at them to get back in their own lines, but they weren't listening.

My only "complaint", "gripe", "observation" -- whatever you choose to see it as, is that the debarkation could have been handled a little more efficiently than it was. And by DCL's standards many of us were surprised it was not. They had been docked at Port Everglades from 8 p.m. the night before and told everyone in an announcement we could begin debarking at 8 a.m. They made flight arrangements for my family at 1:25 p.m. that afternoon. However, they chose to only let selected people know in small groups at a time when and where to debark (this is directly from a CM's own words) because they were trying to get early morning people to their flights. Well, by not keeping everyone informed, all of us who had early afternoon flights never got there on time. We didn't get on our buses until after 10 a.m. Keep in mind, this is AFTER Disney made several announcements the night before that we must leave our cabins by 8 a.m. and be ready to debark. We did just that, and then waited two hours because they weren't prepared.

That's all -- that's it. No, it's not "the end of the world" and no it's not life threatening -- but it was frustrating AT THE TIME. And since we were going through it, it was significant to those of us AT THAT MOMENT. Once on the buses and on our way, we saw our share of the damage that Frances did and knew we were lucky. We never lost sight of that fact. But we are human, not cattle, and by Disney's standards are not used to that kind of debarkation. It was just a blip on the map that day, but for those two hours, it was an uncomfortable situation. Of course, it could have been a lot less uncomfortable if some people had been more patient and didn't act like grade schoolers pushing in line!

DCL did a remarkable job during those three days and went out of their way to have reps onboard at all times visibly present to ease our fears and keep us informed. They were ALWAYS smiling. And I know that they were verbally abused by many. And to our astonishment and great respect, the Captain STILL kept his autograph signing on Friday for more than 1-1/2hours. He looked tired, but smiled for every picture and seemed genuinely honored to sign our cards.

So, now I've said it. :teeth:  Will I ever sail Disney again -- ABSOLUTELY. Won't sail any other line. We are going again in August next year. And will be well prepared for this happening again. Considering the fact that we heard that Carnival and some other ships had to ration food and water the last two nights, we feel DCL took very good care of us!

invaderzim- Thanks for sharing your experience! I wondered how the food situation was working out onboard that 10 day cruise. Wishing you a very smooth cruise next year!
