Little Leauge

Well when it comes to fundraising our league is very unique. We are one of the few leagues in the state where we actually own our own fields. We have a 32 acre complex that is the home of two youth football teams, Little League Baseball, and Girls Softball. We pay all our own utilities, have our own well for water, and maintain the entire facility. On opening day we auction off prime parking spots and last year that raised about $21,000. Our candy sales net over $30,000 a year and opening day festival raises over $40,000. The leagues annual budget will exceed $400,000 a year.

I could only dream our league was that well off!!

:rotfl: at the GLM (goodlooking mom) thing. Just out of curiousity do little league baseball coaches have to go through some sort of certification?

I had to go to get certified more for CPR , than coaching....then we must attend 2 coaching clinics a year, but that isn't hard as they schudle 4-6 and they pay for them for us.

In our area we have a league that is not part of the "Little League" system called Chatsworth Jr. Baseball League. It is run by the parents who keep it going year after year and the property is privately owned. My DS isn't playing this year but has played their since he was 7 and it has always been the most warm and welcoming place for both kids and parents. Every child, boys and girls are welcome and from any area. There are no address boundaries. Sure you are going to always have some parents who are competitive and political but it really is at a minimum or situations are dealt with. In fact, we get alot of kids that come over from the "Little Leagues" such as Northridge Little League which is a highly competitive and political league(they played in the final game of the Little League World Series a few Years Back). I would love to see more of these types of leagues formed because every kid that signs up and trys out gets put on a team and plays-regardless of skill level. No one is ever turned away. Our fees are just about the same, maybe a little less than some of the Little Leagues. One more thing, are fields are way better kept because their is so much more parent involvement. There has to be to keep the league going but that's what makes it so special.

We have this same type of league- called the "junior league" Use to have a true "little league" but parents were fed up with the higher ups and the standards etc..they decided to disban and reform as a junior league

Leagues determine the coaching qualifications of individuals. Little League Baseball Inc. requires background checks on all volenteers that will come in contact with the kids. No background check and you cannot coach, serve on the board or volenteer in any way. Our district sponsors several coaching clinics throughout the year as well as several umpires clinics.

No it isn't the greatest .... but again I am happy that they admitted to wrong doing. I think we have DS convinced that playing in the minor/major league again this year will be good for him. We pointed out that while his buddies will be sitting the bench in LL, he will be playing. We explained to him that if he plays in minor/major league this year is shows that he has good sportsmanship and that he will be the better person ...... I am not sure that he bought it or not ..... he is still really upset about it.

I know it's not what he really wants - but I'm glad to hear that he rescued his glove from the trash and will be playing ball. ;)

I bet he will get more experience & play time than if he just barely made it onto the older team. A good attitude and a love for the game can go a long way!

DH was talking to DS's coach from fall ball just last night and coach was ticked because they had DS pegged for their team - but 4th or 5th round pick (probably about where he falls talent-wise) and DS was picked 1st round. :rotfl: (I can laugh since I'm his mom)
I love the child dearly, but no way is he on the level to be picked that high in our league - but the kid LOVES the game, understands every aspect of it (even though the physical abilities are not always there) is full of hustle and gets genuinely excited for the team.

I'm thinking attitude did it for him. :thumbsup2

This was for a AAA no cut team. (little league)
BTW, DS is 10 and didn't even try for majors. We are also in a VERY competitive league. Not sure about the numbers this year, but last year only 2 or 3 10 year olds made a majors team.

Good Luck to your son.
I bet he has a good chance of moving up where he wants to be at some point during the season if he's 1st on the list.

Thanks for your responses FoolishMortal and BrerRabbit. I was just curious since it seems like in some cases the children are expected to compete at such an elite level.

I am hoping that if a call does come in DS will decide to stay with his team.... back to the good sportsmanship. Never let your team mates down kinda thing. This has been a HUGE eye opener for me. I, too, have learned yet another life lesson.
The MOST funny thing about all of this .... I got a call from a friend who is the PTSA Pres. asking ME if I would help her with modified baseball at the middle school next year!!!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Go figure!!
