Litter Box Training for a Dog?

I had my dachshund litter trained - used SecondNature. She was litter trained for her first 5 years and did great with it. Then my daughter got a doxie pup and did not want him litter trained so we've trained both dogs to go outside. My older girl still would prefer a litter box on very rainy days and I've toyed with getting one again, just for those times.

I just spent the weekend with my Aunt who has a 8# box trained ****zu. She uses cat litter and a large clear bin that is bigger than the average cat box.

Cav King Charles dogs are not always so teeny tiny. Not sure how much, if any, that would affect litterbox training. I suppose if stamper's pup use the litterbox until they're around 20 pounds it would be an issue.

Is there a reason for using cat litter, or the second nature litter? Do they have a smell that attracts them? Can you just put newspaper in the litter box? The dogs I am looking at top out at 12 - 18 pounds.

SecondNature has a smell that attracts them. Also it has stuff in it to help neutralize the odors of what the puppers leave behind. Plus the texture makes it clear to the dogs that this is NOT the floor or carpet.

We use regular cat litter for our dogs because the dog litter that we bought just didn't work well for them. It looked like little logs (not sure if it was SecondNature or not). So we just started using regular cat litter and everything has been fine. Our dogs are 8 and 5 lbs btw. I think it's really just what you want to do. We were never told if there was advantages to using dog litter or not.
