WDW Trip Report-Part 1

Cast: Myself, Lisa 39, DH Tony 41, DD Ashley 14, Megan (Ashley’s best friend) 14, and son Anthony, now 6.

When: Monday, June 11- Sunday, June 24, 2001. We drive from South Louisiana so the 1st and last day would be travel days as the trip is 11-12 hours, depending on number of stops.

Where: ASMovies 6 nights
Dolphin Last 6 nights

I’m going to summarize the trip report into 3 segments: 1st week, 2nd week, and dining/meals.

We decided before we left that the 1st week of our vacation would be the “Disney Vacation” and the last days would be the “R & R Vacation.” My best friend Jackie, her husband Jerrill, and son Andrew (4 days younger than mine) would be with us for the 1st part of the trip while at the ASMovies. They drove also and we used our FRS radios, which have a 2-mile range. They worked really well!

We arrived at WDW with no problems. We stopped before Tallahassee to spend the night on the Monday since we left around 3 PM. It was Andrew and Jackie’s 1st trip. We got all building requests and were in Toy Story, non-smoking, 1st floor, with Connecting rooms. We opened the door between the rooms and it worked out really well, especially since my son would spend each night at “Andrew’s.”

Our first stop was Guest Relations at AK Park to get Jackie and her family AP’s. (They will return in February) We did the safari ride and they were able to see It’s Tough to be a Bug before the park closed at 7:00pm. We don’t see that one cause my son doesn’t want to yet. We ate dinner at Rainforest Café. We had no PS so the wait was about 45 minutes. Once we were seated, the food took a long time to get there, at least 45 minutes. It is interesting to note that once AK closes, the buses stop after about an hour. We were stranded at AK since the buses were not going back to the hotels and no one seemed to realize the buses had stopped running. There were about 100 or so people who were very angry but we were all brought to another park or the TTC to get our appropriate buses.

We went to EE at MGM Wednesday 13, MK Thursday 14, and MK on Saturday 16th during the 1st week we were there. EE was ok until the parks opened, after that, it got crowded soon. We were able to do the “biggie” rides/attractions but had to wait for others once parks opened.

I have been to WDW every June since 1998 and the parks were extremely crowded this time, each day more people. We would usually go to the EE Park and leave that park around 11 or 12. We would have a big lunch (Biergarten, Whispering Canyon, Crystal Palace, and Planet Hollywood) then return to the hotel to sleep, swim, rest, etc.

In regards to water parks, our family went to BB once this week. We arrived at 10 AM and it was packed. We left around 1, as the lines for everything were too long. The girls, however, went to water parks on four days and stayed about 2 hours each time. They went by themselves in the afternoons and said it was crowded but not too bad, yeah, right! Lol.

On the Thursday night, we went to Fort Wilderness Cabins as one of our friends was staying here and was BBQing for dinner. We enjoyed seeing the campground and cabins. After we ate, we went to the FW beach area to watch the fireworks at MK and the electrical light parade. After the fireworks, we made our way back to the bus stop to get the bus to the Loop. Well, Hoop De Doo had just ended as well as the MK fireworks so every bus that stopped at the stop was FULL. It was horrible, why stop when no one could get on or off. Anyway, after about 30 minutes of this waiting and unable to get on buses that did stop, we decided to walk back to his cabin or mobile home thing. Anyway, we walked for about 30 minutes in the dark and got to tour the campground. Finally, a bus stopped, we jumped on, and got off at the loop. The funny thing is, we drove our vehicle to FW but was not parked in the right lot. Anyway, Chris drove us to our car. The trip to FW was interesting!

We spent Fathers Day, Sunday, June 17th, with Tony’s cousin and his family. We all went to a beach, New Smyrna (or something like that). We were able to drive our vehicle on the beach. It was nice but I think the Florida Panhandle (Gulf) has whiter sand and bluer water. We stayed at the beach around 4 hours then came back for PS at O Hana.

We saved O’Hana for Jackie and Jerrill’s last night. They really liked this meal and said it was their favorite meal. After the huge meal, we rode the monorail around the resorts for Andrew’s last night.

Before we were seated at O Hana, I was able to meet SLTrawick (Sharon) from the AOL and these boards. She was with her DH and 2 children. She said they were staying at FW and left an hour beforehand to get to the Poly and just made it! They were really nice and I was happy to meet someone from the Internet Disney Sites.

Once we returned from our meal at O Hana, I did the laundry. I wanted to have everything clean before we switched hotels and I was not doing laundry a second time. The price to wash and dry a load of clothes went up from $1 to $2 since February. It cost $16 to do laundry! That is expensive. Good thing I brought my Bounce Sheets and Tide Tablets. It seemed everyone was complaining about this cost!

I was able to get to bed around 10:30 PM with most of our things packed for changing hotels the next day.

I'm glad you had a good trip down. I guess the water parks really fill up during the hot summer months. The bus system really needs some work doesnt it. We were lucky not to run into many problems though.
