Hi All

We are hoping to travel next fall during (fingers crossed) free dining. I am still trying to work out our drive in regard to night/or day travel. If we arrive very late the first night, I'm thinking it would be in our best interest to do room only. In the scenario where a promotion is going on with 30% off moderates or free dp: Can I do a room only res with 35% off night one and then a package for the 6 nights following? And can these reservations be linked so that we don't have to switch rooms? Thanks for your information and tips.

Yes, I have done that when I arrived a couple of days before free dining. We did room only the first 2 days, then switched to the free DDP for the rest of our stay. When you make your reservations, you will need to do it as 2 reservations, with 2 deposits. Ask for the reservations to be linked.
When you arrive at check in confirm with the CM that you have 2 reservations, and you would like to keep the same room.

You will still have to go through the formality of checking out, and checking in for your package, and get new KTTW cards with your DDP credits on it. I would remind them again that you want to keep your room.

Another thought, if you do the Free DDP package for first day too, you will have extra dining credits that you can use. You can use the extra CS credit for a breakfast one day,or a meal on your leaving day, and the extra TS for either a breakfast, lunch or a 2TS credit dinner.

I have had to do that the last few years, because the discounts don't count for my first night (the Saturday after Thanksgiving).

I linked my reservations and have never had to move the next day.

hmmm. You bring up a good point. Is it worth the additional cost to stay at POR that night vs. a cheap and cheerful hotel on the way into WDW? Maybe I wouldn't have to switch rooms but if one of us needs to wait in the check in line again and what not....hmmm.

That is another scenario; pack a carry-on for the first night and find a good deal on a hotel off-site; get up nice and early and (car's already packed) be there at 7:00 am when the computers roll over in the morning.

I didn't have to switch rooms, and the next day for Check Out- check in, I got to the front desk early, because we wanted to hop on the bus for a park at opening anyway. there were no lines early morning. Walked right up to desk.
