Line Etiquette

My girls want a laptop and a few other electronics so we are planning on going to Best Buy's Black Friday sale. I've done it a few times but never arrived at Best Buy before midnight. The last time at midnight the line was already pretty long so thinking we'll go earlier this time.

I was hoping I could leave and come back or at least go home if needed for a break as long as at least one of us stayed in line. We aren't planning on buying more than 1 of any of the big deals just not sure if people would be upset if we all didn't stay all the time.

I stayed at Best Buy all night last Thanksgiving night to get a computer for my kids. I arrived at 7:30pm and there was already a line 1/2 way around the store. I got in line and waited and got the computer!

People were pretty easygoing-I saved spots for the people ahead of me for bathroom breaks/coffee runs and they did the same for me. From what I read ahead of time, it's important to "make friends" with the people in line around you.

From what I saw (and I'm a black Friday rookie) as long as SOMEONE was holding the spot, people didn't care who it was. I saw switching out all over the place. Now, out and out line cutting was not tolerated, but switching out was fine.

Thanks that does help; I've never been in line long enough that I needed to leave. Not sure what to expect this year and we are eating out early so we'll have the majority of the day free. The deals posted so far don't seem to be wonderful just okay so that combined with the economy might keep the lines down.

I do like the way Best Buy handles the line and distribution; I've heard horror stories about other places but it is pretty well controlled there and the people in line the longest do get the items based on how many they have not on a rush and grab approach.

The Best Buy customer service personnel came through about 1 hour before opening passing out tickets for their top items. I wanted one computer for $200 but got the next-step-up one for $400 so I was satisfied. For those special ticket items, if you didn't have the ticket, you wouldn't get the item. It was pretty orderly IMO. First come-first serve.

if people take turns in line in front of you, your allowed to give them a dirty look
