Limit on Number of Points Transferred

I'm planning a big family get together for a ten day Thanksgiving 2009 vacation at VWL (my home resort).

I don't have a final head count yet, but I'm sure I won't have enough points to get lodgings for everyone even if I borrow points.

I know about the one transfer per use year limitation and that I can bank transferred points. I think this means that I'll be able to do one transfer (and bank) of 2008/09 UY points and one transfer of 2009/10 UY points.

Here are my questions.

1. Is there a limit on the number of points I can have in my account at one time. I have a 200 per UY @ VWL. Does this mean that I can have no more than 600 points in my account for use in any given UY (which is the banked+allotted+ borrowed max) and therefore won't be able to transfer in any points exceeding this limit?

2. My UY is october 2008 and I'm currently using my 2008/09 points for a 11/2008 stay at VWL this year. What is my deadline for transferring in 2008 points? 10/2008 or 12/2008?

Thanks in advance.

No limit on the # of points one can transfer. The issue is finding enough in one lump to do so. You could also transfer into your 2008 UY and your 2009 UY and bank the 2008 points to 2009. As for dealines, it's more based on the UY, not when you do it. Obviously you'd want the points in time to make the reservation which would be 11 months for VWL points and 7 months for all others. If you have to wait for the 7 month window, reserve the week nights with your points and hold on the weekend nights for the 7 month window.

Thanks, Dean.

Let's make sure I was clear.

(I have a 200 VWL Oct UY contract with all 2008/09 pts. used up)

By some miracle I find someone to transfer 400 vwl pts (08/09 UY). I immediately bank these points.

On 10/2008, I get my 2009/10 UY alottment of 200 points.

On 12/1/2008, by another miracle I find someone to transfer another 400 vwl pts (09/10 UY).

In mid January 2010, I borrow 200 pts from my upcoming 2010/11 alottment.

This gives me 1200 total points available for use starting in Oct-2009. (600 more than I could possibly have in my account at one time via banking/borrowing)

I then reserve 3 2bdrs at vwl for ~400 points apiece from 12/1/2009 - 12/10/2009 at the 11 month window using up all the available 2009/10 points in my account.

This will be OK?

Making the stipulations you specified, it will be OK. You might consider booking a 2 BR and multiple studios to cut down on the number of points you'll need and to give you more flexibility for those inevitable changes/last minute cancellations. I will say that going through what you're describing is setting yourself up for heartache. No matter how often or strongly you tell people about your risks and need for a commitment, most simply don't understand or care. IF you have any in this group that's every given you an inclination they might not go, tend to not plan well, have backed out on other plans; run away as far and fast as you can.

Thanks again. And, thanks for the advice.

My plan is not to acquire any transferred points until I have cash in hand from all those who say they are coming. making sure they realize that there are no refunds.

I highly doubt that I'll be able to transfer in all the points I'll need for the estimated 24 people who may be coming. I think I can get enough for 1/2 the trip (about 300 more pts.) The other half of the trip I plan on first trying to get transferred reservations and if all esle fails I'll just buy rooms at one of the moderate resorts. That's doable and should lessen the possibility of disaster.

If anyone has lots of vwl points you want to unload, send me a PM.
You can stretch your points and value by doing cash rooms on the weekends through MS then linking the reservation where it'll be treated like a single reservation.

I thought that was going to be a viable option myself, but then I checked some cash prices for the villas online. Even at the inflated friday and saturday point rates, the cash prices were over 50% higher!!

For example, for the weekend after Thanksgiving it is 60 points per night for a 2bdr at VWL, that comes to about $660 at the current rental rates. The cash price through disney was over $1000 per night. Similar premium for studios and 1bdrs.

That's a budget breaker.

Also remember, that you need to watch out for (or take advantage of) the exact UY month of the points you are receiving in transfer.

For example, if you transfer Dec 08 UY points, these can be used to book a Nov 09 vacation. This transfer would use up up your 1 transfer to your 08UY. However, Dec 09UY points cannot be used for that Nov 09 trip (transferred points can't be borrowed) and a transfer of those points will waste your 1 transfer into your 09UY.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

I'd put the standard rental rate at least $12 per point and realize it's likely you can get the members discount. And you have no risk and no hassle to essentially break even in a situation where you likely couldn't get the points together anyway. Besides I put the Thanksgiving time at Regular season at $790 a night before any discount. I'd say that's close to breaking even with no risk or aggravation and if you get the member discount you're way ahead.

You're right. I must have caught magic season when I was estimating weekend rates since vwl was booked up every weekend until mid December.

Even with the $99 in tax the $790 rate isn't too bad (and the member discount is no guarantee for the weekend after thanksgiving.)

This brings the number of points I'd have to transfer in to about 400 which might be doable after all.

Thanks again for all the help.

If it was me... I might book a 2BR or GV for myself and a few people... and then tell everyone else that they are on their own to book their own reservations. Your GV could be "party central" for meals, get togethers, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no GV at VWL.
