How do you prepare them? For the life of me, I cannot get these little suckers to taste good.

I think my Dad is the only person on the planet that likes lima beans. They are icky.

Thats because they are icky! You will never get them to taste right!!

I love them.

smilie, after cooking them, I just add butter, salt, and pepper. Also like them mixed with corn (succotash)

My grandmother used to make WONDERFUL lima beans. She would never tell anyone how she made them either. I wish she was still around so I could bug her about it. I'll try the butter, hopefully that will help. DH said he will NEVER eat them, even if I figure out a good way to cook them. I put them in a potpie one time (they were in the veggie mix) and after he was finished he had only the lima beans left on the plate.

DH loves lima beans. What type are you using? Canned or frozen? I buy fresh limas in the summer, cook them, then freeze. They taste so much better then canned. We like ours with butter, salt and pepper. Sometimes if I have it I will add a little bacon drippings. YUM!

Sorry, it's inherently impossible to make them taste good. But if you put enough butter, salt and pepper on it, cardboard would taste good.

Are you using frozen?

If so, the only way that I find them to be good is if I use a lot of salt in the cooking water (or a strip or two of bacon). This way, they absorb the salt. Then when you eat them--lots of butter.

Oh, and I'm not a *salt* person so I don't require salt on everything but lima beans seem to really need them.

I guess I'm weird because I love lima beans!!

I put a strip of uncooked bacon in with the water

Let it come to a boil, then put in frozen lima beans (with the bacon still in there)

I cook them for at least 20 min (until fork sticks in a bean easily, I still taste it to see if the bean is soft enough)

Drain the beans, add butter, salt & pepper! Corn is a great mix too!

I love lima beans. Add a little butter and parmesan cheese Yummy!!

I'm not a big veggie person, but weirdly enough, lima beans are my favorite!

I boil them first for about 20 minutes then I sautee them with either olive oil or butter with finely chopped onion or leeks 1 clove garlic minced or a 1/4 teaspoon of pre minced garlic and crumbled bacon. Sautee for about 5 minutes so all the flavors can infuse into the beans. And yum even my two DS's eat these. :)

Wow, bacon. I would never have thought to use that! Thanks for all the input. :thumbsup2

I cook dried, fresh or frozen w/ a hambone, or you can buy a ham slice and put part of it in the pot. Canned, I sometimes add some bacon bits (real ones, not fakin' bacon), sometimes I just heat them up and pepper them (canned usually have plenty of salt).

Yum, I love lima beans!

When ds #2 was 18 months, he shoved one so far up his nose that I had to take him to the ENT to get it vaccumed out! I had thought he sounded a bit congested! Finally, when I told him to blow his nose to get that boogie out, he said "dat not a boogie, dat a bean!" Upon closer examination, he was right.

The only way I like them is when I get them fresh from the Amish and either microwave or steam them. The can ones are nasty.

:rotfl2: "dat not a boogie dat a bean!!!" how cute

My kids love lima beans. It's a great mystery to me, since I don't like them. I just throw frozen baby limas in the microwave with a little water and they act like I gave them candy. Obviously, this is not the most appealing way to cook them but since I don't eat them & they're happy!!...

I agree, if you put enough butter on anything it'll taste good!!!!!!!
