As I laid awake the other night in bed trying to sleep, and being pretty unsuccessful, which is becoming more and more of a routine problem, but that which makes for some excellent trip planning time, I found myself reminiscing on our very first trip 9 years ago to Disney World.
I thought it would be an interesting exercise for you, my highly esteemed Peeps, and actually for myself as well, to chronicle those first memories and impressions- for you, because some of those memories are both entertaining, and I think for those of us who consider themselves either well-seasoned or well-researched aficionados, it can serve as a reminder that not everyone in the parks on any given day (in fact, Id venture to guess very few, in fact) have the foggiest idea about the depth of character and potential Disney property has. Most, I would venture to guess are just like we were: tourists who, on a whim, pop in at the last minute, with not a clue, nor a plan. (For me, this kind of drivel gives me something to do at 11:30 on a night I wish I could get some Ambien.)
Contrary to what some may think, having no plan or clue is not always a bad thing. For us, just going with the flow and experiencing that wonder of first impressions was exhilarating. A trip to Disney, unless you are in a totally unshakable bad mood, really cant disappoint. Even without a plan or knowing diddly squat about anything there, one will still have a plethora of sensory input and delight, likely run into rides accidently at the very least, parades, Streetmosphere, fireworks, the ubiquitous shopping and well everyones gotta eat. Heck, even the bathrooms at Disney World can be entertaining.
On the other hand, as much as going for the first time can whet ones appetite, it can also serve as a source of frustration, as you will see shortly from my memories. I am one who hates the feeling of backtracking, and of having that underlying sense of theres got to be more here. That trip, as wonderful as it was for us, taught me some valuable lessons in trip/travel planning that I still use today.
So, without further rambling, I give you A Mini-Trip Report embedded into a gargantuan Pre-Trip Report, whose idea I deftly stole from Great Biscuit, but who clearly had the upper hand in memory retrieval concerning former forays into Disney Nirvana. Unfortunately, I suffer from Brain Snatching Syndrome brought about by my own children (discussed at length earlier in this thread), so youll have to excuse my advanced case of CRAFT. (Thanks for that proper diagnosis, Sandy!) My memories are VERY foggy from this trip, mostly because we had just attended a week-long pre-field orientation with our agency. We had spent the entire week right after New Year's, 2000 going through a myriad of stressful interviews to determine everything from our financial fitness to our marriage soundness. We had met with a psychiatrist, a medical doctor, and taken a bunch of Bible knowledge exams. Let me just way it was grueling. A 4-day stay at anything Disney sounded wonderful!! Stay tuned as I take you on a "Newbies Tour of the World- Clueless Style".
