Lighting at AKL?

I read somewhere- I can't remember where- that the lighting in the rooms at AKL is very dim. If you have stayed there, is this true? Will it be necessary to bring a makeup mirror? I don't want to go buy one and get there and find out I don't need it! Thank you!

We were there in October 2001 and you really needed a lighted make-up mirror to do your make-up. It was kind of dark in the room. It was nice for the decor but if you want to avoid looking like a clown you may want to take a lighted make-up mirror. Has anyone else notice if they have lightened up the bathrooms? I would also be interested in knowing :)

I found the vanity bright enough to apply make up. The rest of the room is fairly dark so you will need one if you plan on applying make up there.

We found the lighting to be just right throughout the entire resort. From the lobby to the rooms its purfect and fits with the theme.:)

Although it is a little bit darker than other hotels, it's nothing that causes any problems. We actually liked it more!! I see no need to bring a makeup mirror.

I thought the lighting at the vanity was plentiful, of course I don't wear make-up. However, if you plan on reading in the room, bring a bulb. They use 52 watt bulbs in the bedside lamps and fixtures.

I've stayed there twice and never had a problem with lighting. I wear very little makeup at WDW during the day, and at night I go to the mirror over the desk by the slider.

I've read two 1000 page novels in my two visits to AKL, and the lighting by the bed was more than adequate both times.

I found the lighting at AKL to be part of its charm. It was very pretty and cozy. The vanity was bright enough for doing my makeup but then I don't wear tons. However my eyes must be older than Anne's because it was too dark for me to read during the night. I know a few years ago it would not have been a problem but I need more light now.

I just returned from AKL and after reading all the reports about the lighting I was specifically looking for the dark rooms.

I truly have to say, there is no problem with the lighting. There is a double sided (shaving) mirror hanging on the wall in the vanity area, and the lighting there was plenty sufficient to apply makeup, tweeze eyebrows etc.

I never found the room to be dark at all. There are 3 lights by the bed. Lights in the vanity area. And we had 2 torch lights in the room as well.

I wouldn't give it a thought

As others have reported, there are 5 52-watt bulbs in the main living area (not counting the bathroom). This is adequate for most purposes. However on a very dark rainy December day when one of those bulbs is burned out, it does seem kind of dark in the room....
(They did replace it promptly!)

You know it's funny,

My mother in law, who is a chronic complainer and can't see anything nice in anything was on this trip with us. (If I remove all memory of her, this was a perfect trip ).

I thought for sure, she would rip into me about the lighting at AKL. And surprise, surprise, It was the one thing she didn't complain about.

I've used the mirror that is on the bathroom door, if the door is closed, to apply makeup. Hope this helps!

Are you sure we aren't married to the same man? We seem to share a MIL...

lizzie64, the non-concierge rooms don't have makeup mirrors. :)

Thanks Gillian,

Wasn't aware of that

I think the difference in opinion about lighting might have something to do with how your room is situated. Our room had a great view but was very dark, I think in part because of the roof overhang above the sliders. So combine that with the low wattage light bulbs and it was pretty hard to find something in the suitcase even in the morning. The lighting in the vanity area was just fine.:D
