Life’s too short...to never sleep in a treehouse! 8/27 TR is up! Link in siggie

Just for the record - as a man with the kind of feet your hubby could strap onto his plane if the flotillas ever needed replaced - the issue is shared by many (and size 13 allows for a LOT of skin to get sore).

I made the horrible, horrible error on our last Disney trip of taking along a new pair of flip-flops ... leather thongs ... I had grand plans for how comfortable they would be ... and midway into the walk from the bus stop to the main gate at AK I understood the GRAVE error in judgment.

I know that's different from what you're speaking about but since we're sharing foot woes I felt it was apropos.

I am also feeling sad about my tootsies - especially the two big ones. I was in a V-ball tournament in August of last year and wore what I thought were a pair of running shoes to the tournament with intention of going barefoot. Well - the surface we played on was some kind of old field with ruts and dug up slate (which can be like razors) - so the shoes stayed on. At the end of the day the piggies that went to market were both bright blackish purple with blisters that had formed beneath the nail. Here I am now 7 months from the event and they are still an odd melange of colors. If any of you see me at DW this year, please don't look upon my feet!!

I LOVE your PTR and really enjoyed combing through it ... looking forward to more time spent here on your thread.

Yes, I think so! We have 0% humidity here, added to the salty dust, and it's simply that... a dryness problem.

I do rub oil and lotion on, but it only helps to a certain degree. I have no idea where to find the lotion with urea in it. Wouldnt' even know what that's called here... :confused3

you might be in luck in a pharmacy. Urea is the latin name, so a pharmacist should know it by that name. It is used in dermatological lotions as well. I first found out about it when Katharina was prescribed such a lotion against her extremely dry skin. It now has become widely available in normal over the counter lotions. But chances are that you would be able to get the real medical ones in Blankistan as well. I think you should go for something with at least 10% urea in it.

Or I could throw a small container in with the Nuremberg guide book I was going to send to you! :goodvibes

Hmmmmmm. That's interesting. Even in the winter I go barefoot in the house often or with just socks on. Since I'm a SAHM and we homeschool, there aren't a ton of occassions when I have to wear shoes even in the winter.

In the summer I mainly go barefoot or wear my Cleo Crocs (sandals). I never have issues with tender feet. :confused3

And for the record - I LOATHE flip flops! I hate the feeling of that thing between my toes. Talk about hurting!! :headache:

Why does urea bring up vague, yet somewhat questionable, thoughts of urea being related uric acid or to urine?? You're not telling me to pee on my feet, right??

NO!!! :scared::scared: I guess Cynthia did not expect her thread to end up with a discussion on peeing on your feet!! ;) Or would she have expected even worse things to happen knowing her audience?

But urea is one of the substances which can be found in urine, but it is colourless and odorless. And it is different from uric acid. It is the first organic substance that ever was made artificially by using inorganic materials (in case you are interested in the chemistry aspect of it).

Thank Heavens!!!

I'm sure she expected something of this nature sooner or later!

Seriously, though, I was interested in what this stuff is. I don't want THAT on my feet or anywhere else. We had a project once where we added uric acid to canal reeds to fortify it for animal fodder. Apparently if you let it ferment with it on there over a few months, it somehow boosts the nitrogen content by a LOT. The milk production went up by several liters a day! Cool stuff!! :thumbsup2

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have the same issue: feet need to be "trained" to survive in shoes without socks every spring (more likely early summer for me). I thought that was normal, too.

Why don't your friends have this issue? Is it possible that they don't walk very much, so never get to the point where blisters or hot spots could develop? Or perhaps they just don't notice it?

And Liesa, it sounds like you have problems with dry skin on your feet? Have you ever tried a foot lotion with urea in it? Really great for dry skin!

It's a pretty active group of women so I was really surprised but then again, they aren't hiking and perhaps they aren't doing tons of walking, I'm not sure. Or they were socks when walking for any distance. I know they all wear sandals in the summer, I've seen them.

I did some digging Liesa, and found this "Eucerin intensive 10% urea treatment lotion" Eucerin is a very common drugstore brand here, not sure about over there but I bet with some label reading you could find a lotion with it in it. Nutraplus was another brand that popped up.

It's interesting, Eucerin is definitely heavier..with a very different feel than many lotions (as a long time excema sufferer I have tried many) but it's one of the best for excema so this makes sense.

Hi Rob and :welcome:

I made a similar mistake with some very cute juicy flip flops that had rubber thongs on a Key West trip a couple of years ago. I figured for a short period of time (1-2 hours) that didn't' involve a ton of walking, it wouldn't be an issue. I'd worn some less supportive leather strapped ones for 2 days running without issues so figured I was golden. Add in the very different Florida heat to my un-acclimated feet and 1-2 hours in those (plus me underestimating the amount of walking) created some major problems.

Jeff's had the same kind of issues with the blisters under the nail...not pretty. His was from playing indoor soccer.

I can also scope out Rite Aid for the Eucerin stuff here if you like :goodvibes

I can't go barefoot in the house too much or my feet get tired. We have all hardwoods downstairs and standing on them for long periods of time is a bit of a killer...reminds me of when I worked retail and it was a concrete floor! Not that socks help much but they keep my feet warmer. I don't wear shoes in the house though. None of us do. At all. Ever.

Which I thought was pretty normal these days although it wasn't growing up, I remember being shocked at my friend Helen's house when her mother (Korean) would make us take them off and put them in a bookcase by the door.

I've done it for many years now, in Chicago it was really to protect your floors and carpets from getting destroyed and now it's a pretty ingrained habit, in fact none of the kids shoes even "live" in the house at all, they have bins in the garage for them. Most everyone I know does the same so I thought it had become pretty mainstream. Actually I didn't even think about it at all!

It was so funny then a couple of summers ago to be at Sandies and realize mid week that not only do she and Paul wear their shoes ALL THE TIME (as do Jeff's dad and stepmom) but it came up at dinner with some good friends of their who were appalled when their new daughter in law to be asked them to take them off when they came in her house.

I then realized the 6 of us had a PILE of shoes in Sandie's entry which had been there all week, it was probably driving her nuts and she had never said a word....

Well you know me, I TRY to run a clean thread but somehow it goes south at times despite my good intentions

I was. In fact I knew even mentioning feet, something would go somewhere along these lines.

I did some digging Liesa, and found this "Eucerin intensive 10% urea treatment lotion" Eucerin is a very common drugstore brand here, not sure about over there but I bet with some label reading you could find a lotion with it in it. Nutraplus was another brand that popped up.

Or you are just more aware of your skin and how it feels than others if you are an excema sufferer? :goodvibes

Eucerin is one that I was thinking of. It's from Germany btw, made by Beiersdorf, which also owns the brand Nivea. :goodvibes

Even if it isn't the SAME thing, it did make me wonder. Glad we have this all straightened out. ;)

We don't wear shoes in the house either. I do ask the neighbor kids to take them off when they come in, but I don't ask visiting adults. I leave it up to them. It's really just a "trying to keep the floors/carpet clean" thing. But, I'm more comfortable with mine off anyway.

I'm sure I have heels of steel with all of the barefoot-ing I do! :rolleyes1

That very well could be! I've outgrown it but some things stay with you...it was AWFUL as a child. Mostly on my hands, to a lesser degree my arms but one summer it hit my feet. Liesa's description of hers sounded exactly like it. It was a nightmare.

Nivea is good stuff. A little thick for me, oddly, I'm a Lubriderm girl these days as it's less "sticky" than Nivea or the Eucerin but gives me the same results.

Eucerin is what they always have at the pediatricans office, which I think says something (good) lol. They also make Aquaphor which I swear cures ANYTHING!

Liesa...that could be good on your feet too...

Even if it isn't the SAME thing, it did make me wonder. Glad we have this all straightened out. ;)

I'm all caught up. I read all the links. I read most of the chit chat for the last 10 pages.......

Momma, You ROCK!

We watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding last night, and I kept thinking of this thread and that maybe we should try Windex. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Or you could use aquaphor to try to clean things.

:lmao:

too funny. Windex. The fumes would clear up my sinuses and provide the illusion of neck pain relief...until my eyes started burning. The raw spot in between my toes....OY.

Great idea!! I'll try that tomorrow- after I find "urea lotion". Made from who knows where.... ;)

Speaking of sinuses.... OY! I keep doing those deep snorts to cleanse them out, all to absolutely no avial. Time for a salt water rinse, an allergy pill, and a few more noisy snorts just for good measure and to really gross my kids out.

Ah yes, time for the neti pot full flush. Fun times.. It does help though! Far worse things to be addicted to than a good old squirt of ocean spray up the schnoz.

Well, I can't say that I experience your particular foot problem - but I definitely have some weird foot issues of my own. In fact, I'm going to a podiatrist on Monday. Its my toes. On my left foot especially, when I step down it feels like my toes are going to burst. That sounds so bizarre, doesn't it? But I don't know how else to describe it. It's not exactly painful - but just uncomfortable. I can only imagine the look I'm going to get from the doctor when I try to describe it. Maybe I need to look at that foot forum!:lmao:
