Well, I took DD to get her haircut today and they found a few nits and eggs in her hair--not a bunch and no live ones but needless to say we are in full Elimination and Prevention mode!

We have done the lice shampoo and combing. I am soaking all brushes and combs from the house in hot water with the shampoo in it. We have stripped the bed and I am washing her sheets, towels, blankets, and pillows in hot water. I am spraying the couch, chair and her seat in the car with the spray stuff. I have gathered up all her stuffed animals and they will be sprayed and sealed in plastic bags. I have all of her laundry and will wash it all in hot water.

Am I forgetting anything? What else do I need to do? I need this to NOT spread and since it looks like we caught it very early not get any worse.

Check all family members

Do the shampoo plus conditioner and bug comb thing on everyone ;)

If they come back get your pediatrician to give her the oral medicine to kill the lice & eggs. Lice have become immune to RID.

i suggest a headful of mayo, let that sit for HOURS. it'll suffocate the buggers and make her hair shiny.

I tried this, actually did it overnight. Not only did it NOT work, but it was a horrid smelly mess! It took 2 days of washing my hair and it still smelled slightly. I would NOT recommend this. The director at the daycare told me she dyes her hair and that works. I haven't had the need to try that since, thank god. The joys of working in childcare.

Eggs and no live lice? Where do you think they went? I'm sorry to say, but I think you missed some :(.

My DD has had lice 3 times and the ONLY thing that worked for me is what is called "The Lice Program" found here: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/theliceprogram/index.html

Make sure you use a metal comb and not a plastic one. I like the one that Walgreen's sells which has a red handle with a magnifier.

Good luck!

Check all family members-yes. Use the lice stuff on everyone no-it is not a preventive.

If DD can wear her hair in a ponytail do it for a while it will help her from getting them again. Get some TeaTree type shampoo & conditioner, use it til all gone it will help. By the time your all done with it the infestion should be over at the school most likely where she got them.

And keep telling her that it is because she is so clean, she must be a nice host for these little guys.;)

And don't forget to change or empty your vaccum bag each time. Stay strong & try not to itch. I use to do hair & I found them all the time on kids, you just get so itchy afterwards.

For starters you don't need to spray anything. You need to VACUUM, VACUUM, VACUUM. And wash her sheets everyday.

DO NOT use lice shampoo on everyone. You only treat if you have live lice. This is a pesticide.

Do not use lindane.

Get a metal lice comb. That is your secret weapon. I do use the one on Headlice.org, the "Licemiester".

I also use a magnifying lighted mirror because those nits are hard to see for me and my dd's hair is THICK. Use Nix.

Don't forget to vacum out your car and the head rests.

I had posted the other day about my dd coming home from school with an itchy head and we haven't found any yet and she stopped itching the next day but this months Good Housekeepind magazine has an article about lice products and they recommend pesticide free ones that they tested-maybe you could use them to treat other family members as prevention since they have no pesticides and are safer.

I feel for you. We went through this one time. The school nurse said one dd had one nit and the other had two. Ds didn't have any!

I did everyone's hair with Nix - and then reapplied it, I think it was 7-10 days later. I washed everything that could be washed in hot water, the rest I sent to the dry cleaners. Dried everything that could be on the highest setting in the dryer. I threw away all the bed pillows and just started fresh. Washed and dried all the sheets, comforts, etc. Bagged up all the stuffed animals for a month! I vaccumed, vaccumed, vaccumed. I used the spray on the car seats and couhes. I vaccumed all the carpets, mattresses and furnitures daily.

We were lucky and got rid of it in one try. It was a nightmare though.

Also I agree use a good metal lice comb and a magnifying mirror. Good luck!

And the chairs....we found live lice on 2 chairs.:scared: Not fun, went through this a few weeks ago for the second time.
Took 3 weeks to fully get rid of them. I did 2 treatments, 7 days apart.

Check the rest of your family, and have someone check you, too. The metal combs are really good to use; I think they come in two sizes: one for the buggers and the other for the eggs. Good luck...been there and done that!

I actually dyed my hair this morning before we found out about all of this. I wonder if that means I will be okay? I am the one in the house that has been in closest contact with her because we snuggle all the time.

Both the hairdresser and I searched and we could not find anything alive. It seems strange to me also! Of course I figure that means it already jumped on to me or DD12, or on the furniture. I only found about 5 of the white nits, and probably less than 10 eggs.

I am certainly feeling itchy!!! We did buy Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner we will all be using. I had used it last year when there was an outbreak at her school.

I will take her to the school nurse tomorrow and let her examine her and decide if she can be at school.

The school nurse searched, I searched, I did the Nix and pulled out 300 lice out if her head with the metal comb.

The Metal Comb never lies....if you have live lice they will comb out on the metal comb.

I did use the metal combs. I am really glad I decided to buy them since you all recommend them. I got the 2 sizes and used them both. DD has never been so tangle free!

I have sprayed the couch, chairs, car, headrests, etc..

You know, I just had mice I have been dealing with, and now this. If the locusts are next then I am MOVING!

I know what you mean. I had a pediatrician search my DD's head since she had been scratching but I didn't see lice. He confirmed that she didn't have lice. 2 weeks later I mentioned it to my regular pediatrician and she found lots of lice! It took me almost 3 months to get rid of them :scared1:!

I didn't find any? I combed her hair for over 3 hours, 1/2 inch sections at a time. As I said, I found eggs and a few of the white nits, but nothing else. I am really praying that I got all the eggs. Those suckers are hard to see, and were hard to get out, even with the comb and the stuff you use while combing.

robin--:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I am telling you. Let's hope you got them early. Just remember to vacuum alot.:thumbsup2

Dd 5 and 7 always have their hair in pony tails - a lot of the girls have buns (we had a HUGE lice problem last year, with EVERY SINGLE 1st grader/and their families with lice). Don't forget the coats and jackets, hair brushes (we dishwashed ours), and vacuum all of the furniture. I spray the kids with tea tree hair spray before school. You need the metal lice comb, and check after shower every single night until June.

When I was a kid, the nurse would check every kid at the beginning of school. Now, she only checks the kids/siblings in a class with a known carrier, 2 seconds each kid. Having checked my kids daily, I know it takes much more that 2 seconds! Get a lighted magnifying glass.
