LG Appliances...where did they come from?

I'd never heard of them until we built our house 3 years ago, and I wondered and even asked the exact same thing. "LG??" We have an LG washer and dryer. So far, so good, knock on wood.

I have an LG french door refrigerator we bought back in 2004 during a kitchen remodel. They were widely available then...but maybe if you weren't in the market for appliances you don't notice these things, kwim?

My refrigerator is LG and I've had no problems with it. I wanted a French door fridge with a bottom freezer that pulled out and the LG was by far the best fridge for the money that fit that description.

I did just buy it in 2007 though so I can't really speak for its longevity yet.

The are getting good ratings.

I have a Samsung washer/dryer but almost got an LG. I'd have no problems buying the brand.

They are from South Korea. They used to be Goldstar.

Our second LG fridge will be here today. French doors with two-drawer freezer. The LG side-by-side we got 2 1/2 years ago is headed for the new four-car garage. Wife decided she didn't like the side-by-side so much, but the performance has been great!

FWIW, LG HDTVs are generally considered top-tier televisions, just below Panasonic and Samsung in terms of quality and reliability. I don't know how well that translates into household appliances, though.

That's what I found too, in doing research for a new TV when our Magnavox flat screen died over the summer.

They replaced it with an LG, I wondered what LG stood for...when the TV comes on, it says "Life's Good" so guess that's it!! :)

LG stands for Lucky Goldstar. Life's Good is just a marketing thing.

At this point LG is like AT&T in that the actual name has been replaced by the acronym as far as mind-share goes. I bet if you polled people under about 35 they would have no idea what the AT&T is an acronym for.

Good to know. :)

I'm 53 and I don't really know what AT&T stands for. :rotfl:

At&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph. I used to work for them. Hardly anyone knows what it means. IBM as well (International Business Machines). They are just known by their initials.

I have an LG washer/dryer. I am not sure I love the front loading washers in general, but they both work well.

we have an ac unit that is LG and it is great (3)and no problems like the one we had before which was a national known brand.

WAY back when when we were looking for our first house, 1990 or so, the appliance store in our little town had some LG refrigerators. We had never heard of them but looked them up on Consumer Reports and found that they were a good brand.

Just a side note - My husband and his brother own an appliance repair company. The only company that they cannot get training for, get parts for, or do anything for is: LG.

In his opinion, it's a big PIA, as so many people now have them, and they are unable to help them out, at all. LG only supplies to *their* tech's. Which could mean a simple belt replacement on a washer, could turn into a big service call cost.

Just an FYI.

Yep, LG is Goldstar.
Goldstar got a well deserved reputation for making poor quality products.
They invested money and time into turning the quality around, and changed the name to distance themselves from their previous products.
I was amazed to find out LG was Goldstar. I have a Kenmore microwave made by LG, and a Kenmore refrigerator made by LG is being delivered tomorrow. I never every thought I would buy their products.
