hi all. my 9 year old wants to dye her hair blue. im tempted to let her do it since it is summer and i think she should just get it out of her system. i bought the dye already but i dont knnow what people will think of me if i do it. thoughts?

Some people will think you are a cool mom and some will think you are nuts.

My DD, now 13, has asked about it in the past many times. With her blonde hair...no to a full head of color (she has long hair and it would take forever to come out). She has been allowed to use temp dyes on the ends and a few strands, but never her whole head.

lol I would be one of those people that think your nuts.

I'm not a mother but I say why not? It's summer. She's going to be at home why not let her have a little fun? Personally if I saw a 9 yr. old walking around in the summer with blue hair I really wouldn't pay that much attention to it. Other times of the year, however, are a different story. lol

Don't worry about the thoughts of others!

Your daughter will think you are the coolest mom in the world and love that you let her express herself!

Don't forget to take before and after photos. ;)

I have always felt - what you do in your house with your family is your business. That being said, I would have reservations about allowing my nine year old to dye her hair because I would think that it's only the beginning of things to come - at such an early age. The next year - acrylic nails. Eleven - tattoos? Twelve- belly ring? Thirteen- tongue and nose rings, etc. Yeah, I'm dramatic, but I think that the longer you wait for some things, the better.

I'd have reservations letting my DD do it (she's only five, so she's never asked for anything like that). There are other ways to express herself.

Is it Wash out or Permantent Color? I would let her but do a test first just to see if the color is what she is wanting. My perfect blue is not someone else perfect blue. What is her natural color?

Kae

Your choice. I wouldn't have an issue with it.

To add another warning on the color: My neighbor girl colored her hair Red after seeing Shark Boy and Lava Girl. Her hair, which had been white blond, has never been the regular color again. The could never get the color all out....and that was with using a "temp" dye for the red. Be ready to have to deal with the color for quite some time.

Why does it matter what other people will think? Your kid, your decision.

Is it permanent color? My nine-year-old wants blue hair, too. Actually she wants black and blue hair. :rolleyes1 I have told her that once she is a teenager she can dye her hair. I don't intend to have a battle of the wills over something like hair (I will save that for piercings and tattoos) but I also don't think my daughter yet understands that if she changes her mind the only option is a very serious haircut or a very expensive visit to the salon. I was "adventurous" with my hair as a teenager and ended up relatively normal, so I can't give her too much grief.

If it's temporary color and she wants a strand or two, since it's summer...my pediatrician always told me not to argue over the little things with DS and to avoid power struggles.

But if she wants the full on bleach everything white then go neon blue, I would try to compromise with ear piercing or something more traditional.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

Sounds fun and harmless. Hoping you don't have any wedding invites this summer. I wish my mom had been cool instead of "no" all the time.

its not a tattoo -

Life is short, have fun...

I only want to point out that if she colors her hair blue (especially on honey blonde hair) that you will probably have to wait for it to grow out. It would be very difficult and probably take professional intervention to "un-do" the blue hair. It is unlikely that it would all grow out before summer is over and she'd end up with half blue/half blonde hair.

If both of you can live with that, I say go for it.

Just to be safe, I'd start by dying the hair in streaks (like one each side) and see how it goes. My DD is 9 and has a temporary hair-streaking kit -- can't tell you how often she changes her mind about what she wants. She's used every colour in the kit, several times.

2 streaks down the side are easy enough to hide in a ponytail, but also easier to cut out. Also, it gives her the chance to dye her hair more than once if she really loves it.

My DD was a little older than this when we let her dye her hair. If I remember correctly, she was in middle school.

Her hair has been pink, blue, and purple.

I have a funny story to tell. When her hair was pink, we had breakfast at Cinderella Castle. She had her picture taken with the prince during breakfast and he asked her what her name was.

Well, that evening, we were watching the parade in the Magic Kingdom. The prince rode by, looked right at our daughter, waved and yelled her name. Hi Sarah.

There's no way he would have ever remember her or picked her out in a crowd without the bright pink hair.

Fast forward to today. Her hair is back to it's regular color brown and she is a college student with fond memories of her special "prince moment and picture."

I don't see the problem with letting your daughter dye her hair. Believe me, there are much bigger battles to come in the future.

DD is semi perm and it just fades away! within a week! (the red part, not the bleached part - so I've re-dyed it, now she wants me to find a perm color so she doesnt have to do the red part so often!)

Disney1990 - oh how I hate thinking about the "bigger battles" Cute Prince story, thanks for sharing!
