Let's Talk Remodeling

That's your rental???? Can I come live with you?

No. I'm serious. I want to be your new best friend. And if all else fails, will you rent it out to a woman who owns a massive Golden and a bratty Lab?

Really, that's absolutely gorgeous! I'm assuming this is somewhere in the Smoky Mountains? Not that I've ever had the pleasure of seeing them, but it looks like them.

See? I'm mountain deprived. I need to see them, and I need my dogs to be with me. :rolleyes1

beautiful log cabin!

My brother and my cousin both have log homes and they love them.

I think it would probably look out of place in my suburban neighbourhood but I have always wanted one! :rotfl:

Beautiful cabin Mickeysgal. Where is it? It looks like the Blue Ridge Mountains to me.

I haven't read this thread in so long but I caught up last night. So many beautiful projects have been completed. Good luck to everyone currently in renovations. We're planning some very minor things in the next couple of months.

AMITY, when's the pool party??? I'm only 4 hours away and I'll bring the cocktails! Also, most of your pictures are missing now. If you still have the pics of the sconce and hardware you refinished, would you mind reposting or PMing them to me? Thanks!

That's because I'm an idiot and removed them from my photobucket account.

I'll retake them and post them sometime today.

The guniters are on their way! Then, the worst step of the pool is over!

Thank you everyone!

AMITY, Sure, come on down! I've got dogs myself. We'll have fur everywhere.

Yes, it's going to be a rental and a weekend home for us. The thought process behind it is that multiple families can stay there. There is very little rental inventory with 5 bedrooms and with each having it's own bath, it has the potential to do well. (We're hoping). Honestly, what I'm struggling with is that others will be using my things. :scared: I don't think twice about staying in a hotel or a resort, so I'm not sure why this is bothering me so much. It will be cleaned by a professional housekeepers after each guest. It's something I'll have to get over. I'm concerned about damages, but what we're hearing is that the nicer it's decorated, the nicer people will treat it. We're making sure that stuff we put in there will be so sturdy, that it will be tough to damage and that any scratches, etc. will add character.

Ok - off of psychology and back to remodeling. The framework is complete for the outdoor room. We're going up there this weekend and I'll take pictures.

Bengalbelle, you win! Yes, it's in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You must know your mountain ranges. :thumbsup2 That's impressive. How did you figure it out?

My inlaws have a cabin not too far from Asheville with a very similar view. They overlook Mt. Mitchell. That's our escape so we go as often as we can.

You're so lucky to have mountains. We get hills, and even those are far away from me. Here, I get flat. I know I'm not alone; Shovan shares it with me!

There are good people out there that won't do any damage. I can not stand to have a messy hotel room, or rental. I'm always putting things away and cleaning things up. It drives me nuts otherwise. I know I'm not the only one like that!

I can't wait to see the photos!

Here's my latest. We've gone from this:

To this:

The area behind the pool and the new decking, is going to be 8' deep and about 35' long. I have no idea how I'm going to landscape it. I need to block out that house behind me (and deter those kids from jumping my fence; I caught them doing it last night to get a ball), but I don't want to do a lot of tropicals. It's driving me nuts.

I cannot wait to see this pool complete! We are looking to add a pool in a tight space (plenty of yard just not where we want the pool) and have been throwing around many ideas.

I think I'll have a better idea of the fit when I see it with gunite (which they're fixing to start spraying any minute now). We're only going to have grass behind my garage. We're calling it the poop pallet.

The real estate agent in me, hates to do that because of potential resale issues, but the homeowner in me told her to shut up.

Yes! They finished the gunite!

Here is the view looking towards the palm. You can now see where the sheer decent will be, if you look for the groove in the bond beam.

This is looking towards the house. The top step is the sun shelf. You can't tell from this angle, but it's about 4' deep.

The pergola people are on their way to drop off the wood right now, and they're starting that tomorrow. We go to pick out the tile and flagstone at 10:00 and the designer told me that the next tile crew free, would be over this way to start the decking.

This is moving waaaaaaay faster than my last pool did! The gunite has to cure for two weeks, but by then, everything else will done, and all we'll need is the Pebble Tec.

Well you are not heading over there without me!!! We'll have to carpool!

Things have definitely changed since our 22 yr old pool was installed!!! Our's took weeks & weeks before we saw gunite! I agree, your's was scary bad the 1st day but here it is today, with the gunite already in! Even after hitting the sewer line??!! I may just have to move to Houston yet!!

I can't wait to see how that wall looks once the water is in! I think it's going to look so fabulous!!!

mickeysgal, Your cabin is absolutely fantastic! Beautiful! :thumbsup2 Seriously, If the bottom level is handicap accessible I would consider renting it. Since you are doing some renovations, have you considered making it more disability friendly! ;) We have lots of friends & family who head that way often, but we are usually left out because most rentals are not HA friendly.

We're such losers. We were sitting in it tonight. I did have a glass of wine though, so I wrote it off as important practice.

And I'm here to say, gunite puts off some heat while it's curing.

That pool is simply incredible. I love the waterfall effect. So, how many neighbors have stopped by so far to check out the progress. I'll bet they can't wait until it's done. They're going to start showing up at your door.

Thank you!

There are a few things on the first floor that currently would prevent it from being handicap accessible. The turn to go into the master would be tight, the master bath has a deep dual head shower but there is a threshold, and currently the beds are high. They're pillowtops with a standard boxspring. We're thinking of getting low profile boxsprings because I don't want folks stepping up on the side rails of the beds to get up onto them. I don't want to break the siderails by too many people doing this. Those aspen log beds cost a fortune. :scared1:

Just curious, how wide do doorways have to be to be HA?

ADA recommends 36" but 32" is the minimum accepted. When we redid the bedroom, the best modification gave us only a 32" opening width. That works fine for DH's average size power chair.
The state HA engineer kept pushing pocket doors but that only works if the walls are 6" & don't have electrical wiring in that area. It would have meant more extensive work for us.
There is something called a swing-away door hinge, that can be used in some situations. It essentially increases the opening width by 2 inches.

The door openings & an accessible bathroom is what we are usually concerned with.

I can't wait to see more pics of your cabin. It sounds wonderful.

I have never heard of this. We may need to look into this. Thank you!

How is everyone else doing? Any outdoor remodeling being done as the weather finally turns the corner into spring? We are starting to see flowers bloom in our landscaping. Spring has arrived.

AMITY - any new pool news?

Nah, the pool will sit like this for awhile now. We're having to water the pool twice a day, which is a very strange thing to say!

They did start building the pergola today, but they only got the main support beams in, so it doesn't look like much yet. It'll probably be about five more business days before it's finished. Hopefully during that time, the waterline tile and the coping should be installed on the pool.

If I had a pool that great in a nice warm climate, you would never see me around here again. If we don't see you, we know you're in the pool. Enjoy it. :goodvibes
