Lets talk...Pie Crust! Made from scratch or....

Made from scratch, but not by me, by my DH. He makes the BEST pie crust. He better get busy, he has 5 Apple Pies to make for Thanksgiving.....

I used to think storebought--until

I figured out how to make it WITHOUT following the directions.

I buy pastry flour and start adding the cold water and veggie oil as directed--and just keep working with it until it is the proper consistency. I have had bad luck with some directions--so I finally just winged it and used the directions as the springboard.
Sometimes I roll it out--other times I just press it in the pan. I have a marble rolling pin that I use. You can't flour it easily to make the dough not stick--so I put a large section of saran wrap over the dough and then roll--this way the dough doesn't stick to the pin--and I don't get flour-freckled pie crust. The plastic wrap comes off super easy. This whole process might take a while in your first efforts---it now takes me a couple of minutes.

My mom is a trained chef--and says that a lot of times in recipes--they leave out important tricks and such to make things easier. So I personally found this true with pie crust--though others might have had no trouble.

I'm chemical phobic and don't like that they use shortening in the store pie crust...a.k.a partially hydgrogentated oil. I try to avoid that ingredient like the plague!!!

Scratch only, but I think we are a dying breed.

Scratch if I've got time and the inclination. Frozen if not.

but by my husband.....he does it for a giant pie .........three times a recipe in one pie crust

I try to find the time to make pie crust from scratch.

scratch

now I want some "cinnamon things" - pie crust spread with butter/margarine, sprinkled with cinnamon & sugar, rolled up, cut into "cookies" and baked - yum!

or just some plain baked piecrust (I don't like filling, just the crust  )

and butter rolled up thingie.....we always do it with left over crust

Yeah, yeah, yeah. My kids insist on creating their own things with the scraps. Cinnimon and sugar is one of my favorites of their creations.

I buy my pies at Costco. They make the best pumpkin pie ever and it's only $5.99 and huge!

It depends on how busy I am actually. If I am too busy to make one myself, I will buy the pillsbury that you just roll out. It is easy and no one in my immediate family would ever know the difference anyway! LOL

If I have the time, I will make it from scratch! I agree with arminnie, it is a dying breed of people! I remember my grandmother and mom in the kitchen during the holidays making everything from scratch! You would never catch store bought anything on my grams table!! :)

::yes:: mmmmmmm...

Now y'all are making me feel bad about the prepared pie crusts I have in my fridge....I used to be able to make a really good pie crust using my food processor. I have lost that ability somewhere, and the last few times my crusts have been yucky.

Could one of you pie crust mavens share a recipe with tips? The easier the better. I have also read that putting it in the fridge for awhile before rolling it helps. any tips would be worth trying it again this year...

Thanks!!

My mom use to make those all the time with leftover pie crust. Most of the people I know have never heard of them. Guess I will be making some pie crust today for the cinnamon things.

How about made from mom?

my mom makes the absolute BEST pie's. She makes the pie crusts for me- and then I pick them up and finish the pies!

Make them from scratch, when I was a teenager......now I do QUICK and EASY!::yes::

Scratch here, too. The only recipe that comes out, though, is the one that was printed on the older Tupperware pastry sheets. I always make a double crust amount so there is plenty left over for the cinnamon thingies.:teeth:

Is your "real" name Tricia or Patricia? ;)

Patricia Ann formally, Tricia or Trish for short. I prefer Tricia.
