Let's Talk Comic Books...

Okay, doing a quick search of the threads here at the Dis, I see a few comic books threads have been tried, but not in a while. So, I'll give 'er a shot and try to start up a new one, since comics are such a big part of my life. (Just ask my fiancee... poor thing has had to put up with my long boxes, action figures, and statues for years. )

So, what do you like/read?

Me, I'm a big DC guy myself. There is very little in their superhero "DCU" that I don't read. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash (although the new direction/writers has forced me to drop the title, something that never happens with me), both the Justice League and Society... well, you get the idea. Everything usually finds its way into my pull file.

As for Marvel, I read a lot of them too. Spidey, Capt. America, Thunderbolts (don't know how the new direction will sit with me though, seems more like DC's Suicide Squad with A-Listers to me, but we'll see...). The only real X-book I read regularly is Astonishing. Civil War has been really good too. The first big event book done by Marvel that has gotten me excited.

As for independent titles, the only one I read with regularity is Powers, but since it's now published by Marvel's Icon imprint, I'm not sure if it counts.

Plus, word is Harley's creator, Paul Dini, will use her in an upcoming story in his great run on Detective Comics. So keep your eyes peeled for that sometime in '07.

Stitch1970: My fiance is a huge comic geek, but he totally hooked me too so now our collection is growing ever faster. I totally love X-Men (but what woman doesn't have a crush on Wolverine?) and Spiderman, haven't read too much DC stuff yet. I can give you some suggestions for some really good titles that I have really enjoyed:

DC/Vertigo:
Preacher
Transmetropolitan
Y: The Last Man
100 Bullets
The Invisibles
Sandman

Some less "intense" titles but still fun:
Bone
Strangers in Paradise

In my DF's opinion anything by Matt Wagner- he told me to say that

Give this stuff a try, some of it can be dark and/or a little graphic (hehe no pun intended) but there are some amazing storylines out there that don't follow the typical "superhero" line.

Sounds like your fiancee has great taste!
Be sure to check out Matt Wagner's stuff coming out in '07! It's the 25 Anniversary of Hunter Rose/Grendel. (Time flys, doesn't it ) He's reissuing the 3 part series that started it all from Comico Primer. Also, he is reissuing Grendel: Devil by the Deed for the first time in I don't know how long. Look for it in black, white, and red. Should be cool.

Sandman may go down as the greatest comic series of all time. It and Watchman are neck and neck in my book.

And what can you say about Bone that hasn't already been said? Great for the whole family.

Daredevil is great! I didn't think anyone could top Bendis, but Brubaker is giving it shot. Great art too.

What do you think of both Batman titles since One Year Later? I think both Morrison and Dini have hit home runs. Neither title have been must reads in years, and both title are now among my must reads the week they come out.

Plus, What about 52? Another great read, and it comes out on a weekly schedule!

The Batman titles are on my must find list, but your dead on about Daredevil.

But right now X-Men(actually on the hunt for any issues that Pete Wisdom is in, for both my collection and for RP plots. My take on him is a younger female but she has his edge(and the distaste for spandex).

But Constantine is the current favorite. Came along with the movie and now I'm hooked

V for Vendetta is my second favorite Alan Moore book, behind Watchmen.

I thought the movie was good. The changes made sense when seeing it move from ine medium to another.

I have a comic book addict for a husband..LOL! He has literally thousands of all different kinds, but his favorite is Ghost Rider.. of course he cannot wait for the movie to come out next February!

The only ones I ever got into were old Spiderman comics when I was very young and the original TMNT... I used to have some of those, but I lost them in one of my many moves. My DH would love to collect comics, but I won't let that happen. We already have a video game and old movie collection... I had to draw the line somewhere! So he accepts reading the grappic novels he can get at the library..... oddly it was I who brought a Manga into the house and am now seriously considering buying the rest of the set.

I love the movie V for Vendetta, but if I read the original it would probably ruin the movie for me.

I have daydreams of owning a comic books/graphic novels store...

I won't bore you with the entire list, but I cut my comic-books teeth on the X-Men way back in the day. From there, I moved on to some of the classics: Watchman and V (for Vendetta). And I'm somewhat of a Frank Miller fan , though my heart might belong to Will Eisner. I'm also reading Y: The Last Man, Hellboy, The Ultimates. I'll read some of Gaiman--what a cottage industry he is. I love the Grendel series.

For graphic novels, I read Maus years ago--and thank goodness for Spiegelman, one of the people to pave the way for graphic novels as literature (even if he wrongly casts aspersions on the superhero genre). And I just finished rereading Black Hole...creepy!

I'll see film adaptations of my faves, but it's hard not to think negatively about the changes made for a movie.

So, you like Frank Miller and Will Eisner, huh? Then you must love the fact that Frank will be doing the movie adaptation of The Spirit. He's both writing and directing the movie. Here's a look at the cover of his script treatment, making it's way around Hollywood:

While the picture is certainly more Frank than Will in style, after Sin City and 300 (what we've seen of it anyway) I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Also, to let you know since you mentioned you were an "old-school" X-Man fan from back in the day, you may be saddened to hear that Dave Cockrun passed away this weekend due to complications from diabetes. Dave was very active in the comics scene throughout the '70's and '80's. Without his influence on Giant Size X-Men (that reshaped the whole X-universe) we may never have had such great characters like Wolverine or Storm. Not to mention 3 fantastic films... What was your son's friends name? I read a lot of Exiles when it came out at first, and I've never missed an issue of Superman or Action Comics in over 20 years. Maybe I've heard of him.

It's funny how small a world it is (no pun intended on this DisBoard ), but the artist Greg Land (he did Birds of Prey, Nightwing, and is currently one of the hot artist to watch today with his work on Ultimate Fantastic Four) used to live here in New Albany, IN. A town of about 50,000. In fact, I've seen some local buildings from here and Louisville, KY in more than one book he's drawn.

As much as I would say read the book "V" was inspired from (it's one of my all time favorites) if you think it will take away from your enjoyment of the film, then I'd say stay away.

The book (as most book to film adaptations) has wider range, with more characters and subplots that were tossed out to streamline the film's narrative. In the book, V is much more an anarchist than he is in the movie. But I still enjoyed the film.

Speaking of films and TV, does anyone watch Heroes? Great show that keeps getting better.

Wow! I love his stuff. He did some of my favorite art on Flash years ago. I think he's doing (or done) issues of She-Hulk recently. I always liked his pencils. I think he did some Teen Titans too. And I remember him working on a revamped Outsiders (long before this current team), cause I was happy to see him attached as the artist on that.

He's always had a realistic approach to his characters (like Perez) without taking them out of their context.

That is very cool. Well, at least you know he has one more fan out there.
