Let's talk about pirate manners and pet peeves

"Hi, I'm PirateEmery, and I'm a Sitontheflagaholic."

"Hi, Pirate!"

I am trying to rid myself of this, and I think I'm doing a better job. :guilty:

You know, I can totally respect why some of you prefer the computer. Like I said, my husband is exactly like this and detests playing any people at all.

As for people re adding themselves after being booted, they may be new or not understand what is going on. If someone boots me I don't add myself back but I do ask them why. Again, if you aren't explaining what is going on to the person being booted, you can't also be upset if they add themselves back when you felt you didn't have the time to bother to tell them you simply want to play the computer and not another person.

I know that vmk designed the game with a "boot" function but they also designed it for anyone to join any team. You can't blame someone for not knowing any better and just wanting to play the game. They have as much right to join as you have to start the game. However, simple communication in my opinion would clear up a lot of misunderstanding. If people aren't willing to at least do that, then they can't complain about players adding themselves to computer player teams.

Well, do you explain to them that they are being booted because you prefer computer players? Again, I see nothing wrong with that if you are up front. If you don't tell them some people may not understand that.

You can explain to high heaven that you need to boot someone and yet
they will keep joining anyway! If you get the boot, the only reason to
jump back in the game is ONLY to irritate those who booted you.

Last night, someone was booted, and we asked them not to join our game,
yet they insisted. We had all robot pirates on her side. We then proceeded
to win the game very quickly. She made empty threats to report us,
but I'm sure she's going to be just as rude today to other people.

Not really. I enjoy shooting at the flag sitters. They get really upset
when they die and you have the flag for the taking. ;)

not if you stop on the flag, get killed and then DONT blow up

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, LOL! BUT I HATE flag sitters!!! Angers me almost as much as the sore losers that cancel the game on you. It's the main reason why I had to stop playing Capture the Flag and swich over to Ship Battle. Not worth the anger on my end. :teeth:

Woot... you go girl!! Love new computers, and welcome to the world of highspeed!

As far as the pirates game goes, these are my thoughts; We all have our own way of playing. Verbal abuse is of course not acceptable, and I would call that harrassing a player, its against vmk values, so when your game is done, report. Other things like boots, sitting on a flag, even leaving a game is not doing anything against the rules, its just considered offensive to some. I think if the game is getting to you, its time to take a break, plain and simple. I had a great time this morning playing friendly flag (with an occasional firing, lol) with a group of friends. No stress, we chatted during play, we took turns winning, we got keys and we got credits. Best of all, we had fun! We certainly didn't develop any pirate skills, but I'll take a fun game of chit chat anyday over battling for a win! Thanks to all of you who made my morning a blast!! :thumbsup2

Okay, and I'm not so irritated but almost amused at the people who yell "cheaters" as soon as someone else wins the game. Is there a way to legitimately cheat in the game that I'm not aware of or do some people feel the only way to justify their losing is to accuse the other team of cheating? I suspect the latter myself.

I have got this in the past too. Cheater?? why?? because I beat them???
If could type faster I would tell them they were poor sports. I win - what -one or twice a month, couldn't I get a "job well done" or "you are getting better" or just one word of encouragement? Even thought I lose most every game I have been trying and trying -- I get no credit for making the effort???

Today I was in the lobby and someone started a game against the computer but left his side open for any players. I had pretty much had my fill of the game and just about ready to leave, but then *everyone* started talking about his game and "another newcome trying to learn" and other things. So I joined his team. He kicked butt in the game, I sucked of course. :wave2:

Why should I have to tell them anything? They joined my game as I was loading in the AI players. I boot, finish what I am doing and then start the game. I do not talk. I am busy doing other things. Like trying to win games of pirates for the keys. In the time it takes me to "tell them upfront" I could have won another game. I can beat any level of pirates in about 40 seconds when I play alone.

Which bring me to my other PPP (pirates pet peeve). People who think they have a right to join your game. I started the game, I decide who I play with, period. If VMK did not want that, they would not have the "boot" feature.

Today I was in the lobby and some girl was just begging people left and right to join her game, so I did. And she booted me. That is when I wish them to DC just as they are about to win -- yup, that's my fantasy and I'm sticking to it.

I am totally with you on this. Flag sitters drive me nuts! If you can't guard the flag the fair way, just don't guard it at all..

The fast ships are the Black Pearl..and they ARE fast..hard to maneuver though. I'm just trying to figure out a way to practice this game without making my team mates suffer. I feel horrible when someone pairs up with me and I play like poop. :sad2: My only recourse has been to play a game right after it and let them be my opponent. ROFL I'm pretty sure Peacefully was a receipient of both scenarios last night... :lmao:

Aw you're not so bad. I think you beat me a couple times. Or least once. It's hard to remember cause I've slept since then. hehe

I'm curious what counts as flag sitting. Cause I kind of... rotate around the flag when I guard it. So I've had it stolen away sometimes, but I've also won a lot doing it. Is that bad form?

Something I'm suprised hasn't been mentioned much. Letting people choose their ship. I love the Wicked Winch ship. I choose it for almost every game I play unless I get in the position where I need to be a flag fetcher. Yet several times a day I'm stuck with the default ship because people pounce on the start game button. I can only figure they're either really impatient or purposely trying to put the other team at a disadvantage.

On that note, occasionally I'll do a game of Capture the Flag with me as Wicked Winch and the other person as Black Pearl, and they'll sit on the flag and tell me to get the flag. They're the ones with the fast ship! Even if I try to explain to them about fast ship slow ship, that takes up a lot of time too, and rarely makes a difference. So of course we wind up losing because they have less health and get killed off faster while I'm slow as all get-out.

Maybe I should look into this playing with DIS members thing. The general public is so frustrating.

Here is a little of what I experienced today (all by same person) :badpc:

I asked if everyone was ready. Everyone playing the game replied "Yes".
And this is what I get?

Spoken like a true veteran of the VMK pirate game.

John Calvin had it right, y'all. Total depravity, baby!

It is just as likely that the game beginner is trying to start the game before someone else joins and makes the teams unbalanced again.

Here's a truism that you can take to the bank (and believe me, it took me some time to acclimate to the concept): Whoever starts the game is the Overlord. They may do what they will. If the result is too mysterious or unfair to you, your problem is with the game design, not the game starting player. Call Yavn.

I agree with the above, Peacefully!!
If I have the faster ship and someone tells me "you guard", I go for the flag anyway. Sometimes the person gets abusive, sometimes they hang back. I just wish people would say "I'll get flag" or "I'll guard" instead of telling -me- what to do. I guess I'm not too popular with people when I don't do what they tell me to do, but so be it!!
Also, quick comment on the AI ships...
Talk about cheating!! I've seen two of them die over gold cannonballs!! And how come they can just do that "step, step, step" sailing thing?? Does everyone know what I mean? Boy, I wish I could do that!!
Rant over (for now ;) )

Generally when I start a game I go "one mississippi two mississippi three mississippi" then start. It's three seconds, it lets everyone choose their ship, and no one extra has ever joined in that time. Also, no one has ever complained to me that I didn't let them choose a ship.

Many times they do it when they've waited forever for the last player, me, and then they hit start the second it lights up. So obviously no one is joining so they can't be too nervous about someone else joining if they waited forever for me, yet I still don't get to choose my ship.

Yes it is a flaw in game design, but it's also exploitable by people wanting an advantage over the other team if the other team is the last to join up. For instance if you're starting a capture the flag game and the other team winds up with two basic ships instead of Wicked and Black Pearl, while you have the "good" ships, obviously you have a better chance at winning so it gives them incentive to start ASAP.

Tonight I was playing Ship Battle on a team with someone I didn't know (can't even remember her name, but it was girly, so I'm sure it was a she). After she was sunk she began to bark our instructions to me. Then when we lost she said "Slow! That was your fault, Princess!"

So I said, "You are not very nice at all. Until you can learn to be polite, I am just going to sit here and not help you at all." Then she left.

Honestly, though. I admit I'm not a very good pirates player, but it's not like I wasn't trying. I don't know what gets into some of these people! :guilty:

You know, I've thought about that myself when people start making rude comments....just sitting there and basically committing suicide in my ship just to spite them. Of course that wouldn't be very nice either but I've thought about it.

Yup, I have to admit I'm guilty of this at times. It's that whole unbalancing thing... :rolleyes1

LOL, I always choose the Wicked Ship for flag because frankly I stink at getting the flag. Yet I have people tell me to go get the flag even though they have the faster Black Pearl Ship or they just start hanging back until I eventually have to make a run for the flag.

Yesterday I got into a game where my fellow team mate instructed me to guard. Basically said: "Stay here, Guard" "I go" By the third round my response to that had to be:

"Yes, master"

I don't think they appreciated the humor in that.

my favorite is when eveyone on my team dies right away leaving me to get 2 or 3 ships on my own, then my team proceeds to tell me to HURRY UP!

At that point I stop moving and let the other team shoot me... and say Was that Fast enough??
