Let's share our favorite inexpensive Christmas gifts!

Love this Thread!! Love the ideas!!

I would love to get books... we have a place here called "Paperback Shack" and you can get used books super cheap. I don't care if the books are used, the story is the same either way!!

My long distance friend that I meet at Disney each year gave me a photo of the two of us in a Best Friends frame that I cherish. She also gave me a purse hanger and I love it.

Love picture frames, any size, McDonald's gift cards for coffee and frappe, my grandkids love it when I make up a box of "stuff" like scotch tape, tiny staplers, note pads, markers, stickers, etc. You can get very inexpensive boxes at 5 below,
you can find lots of stuff at 5 below! my grandsons love army men...the cheap ones, and anything you can play with in the tub!

I was just thinking of making up some "coupons" for my kids stockings...

Some Ideas:

Skip A Chore (then Dad or I have to do it for them)
Stay Up Late
Pick Dinner Menu
Cleaning Service (Dad or I will clean their room)
Sleep Over

Etc....

I have to say that I may be different, but I don't like getting things like lotion or bath gift sets, unless they come from someone who knows what I like-I'm picky about scented things. My step MIL buys everyone bath and body works stuff each year-she gets it very cheaply, but I always end up exchanging it because the scents she picks about kill me. I'd be much happier with a $10 gift card.

So yeah, you can be cheap but still pick something out that is tailored to the recipient. I love gift cards, even small ones, because they let me treat myself without feeling guilty. Don't give me one to some place like mcdonalds, though-I only go there with my kids and that doesn't feel like a treat :). A nice coffee shop, the little French bakery, iTunes.....ten bucks there would make me very happy.

Inexpensive gifts I've given or received include: micro plane grater for the kitchen; crocs I've bought on clearance, shipped for less than ten bucks; photo book of our son's first three months, free; photo calendars, about $10 each; Smart Wool socks, usually about $15 which I think is outrageous, but people who are fans love em' and you can find hem on sale; a small amount of a really high end food item, like saffron or really nice balsamic vinegar; movie gift cards via groupon 4 movies for $20); a missing piece of someone's collection, like that Fiesta Ware bowl I don't have yet, for under $10; some new quilting notion or something like extra rotary cutter blades for my mom; a CD, which you can get for $10 if you use the 40% Borders coupon...

Well, the list goes on. I guess I'm just trying to encourage folks to think about the gift recipient. I'm a foodie, so don't give me the basket of spaghetti fixings and a cheese grater-I have that stuff. My bachelor cousin might love it, though. I've got small children, so give me a couple hours of babysitting and a book store gift card. Know what I mean?

I agree with this! I'm hoping that reading all of these ideas will prompt new ideas for someone I know. I don't feel right giving someone something just to buy them a gift...it has to have meaning. :santa:

Oh, wanted to add that we've started giving my dad a donation to The Heifer Project every year, as he has said he doesn't really want more "stuff". He loves it, the kids love going through the catalog to pick out what animal they will give, and it starts at only $20. We usually wrap up the equivalent Schleich animal so there is something to open.

That's an awesome idea! I have a 15 y/o and it is harder and harder to find something that he likes within a reasonable cost.
Thanks for the great tip!

I am a grandma and a nurse...so I don't go to McDonald's except for coffee or breakfast on the way to work...you would be surprised at the number of McDonald's bags coming into work in the hands of other nurses...besides, we don't have a Starbucks in our little town or any coffee shop for that matter!

We're trying to do an inexpensive Christmas this year! So far I've scored a $20 Gift Card from Sears from Coke Rewards. We like the $5 lottery ticket idea! Oh and I'm making hand print coasters (from DD2's hands!) for the grandparents, just going to use up some extra fabric around the house. :thumbsup2

I read in a magazine once that a great gift is, to bake a small loaf of bananna bread and place it on a small bamboo cutting board from the $1 store and wrap it in celophane. The the recipient gets to enjoy the bread but also gains a new cutting board. :thumbsup2

Love these ideas!!

Thanks for the Cracker Barrel & mag suggestions! We got DS Popular Science for his bday & he loves it! I think I'm going to get Natl. Geo Kids for DD. They love getting mail & it gets them to read about new ideas too.

The Cracker Barrel soda & old time candy will be great in their stockings. Plus they have some fun stuff you don't see everywhere.

I agree about small gift cards. I don't often like to give them but I love a small one so I can treat myself without feeling like I shouldn't be wasting that money.

I agree with previous posters that it's all about thoughtfulness and knowing your recipient.

The best inexpensive gifts are those little things that people love buy won't often indulge in because they're frivolous, hard to get, or out of the budget right now.

The key to getting this one right is totally knowing your recipient. I wouldn't have any use for smelly candles or lotion, but I would go gaga over body wash because I can never make myself pay for it when plain old soap does the job just fine. One of my friends would be mystified by body wash, but would go crazy for a supply of banana Laffy Taffy candies since she can only get the mixed bags in the stores by her.

So listen to your friends and keep your eyes and ears open. You'll find out their little treats!

I would be extremely happy if my family would shop in the various Dollar Stores for me.. They literally have everything I love, want, and need..:thumbsup2

Great name-brand scrapbook paper..
Brand name stickers..
Scrapbook punches..

Lined hard-cover journals - in every size you can think of..
Nice lined spiral notebooks in various sizes..
Beautiful stationery - lined and unlined smaller regular letter size..
Beautiful decorated computer paper - even holiday ones for me to type my Christmas cookie recipes on.. (Both of the above often with matching envelopes..)
Ballpoint pens - better than the ones in the department stores..
Scotch tape (I go through a ton of it..)

Duct tape.. Gotta have my duct tape..:rotfl:
Various containers for food; craft supplies; odds and ends..

Books
Cookbooks

Blank VHS tapes (very hard to find now)
VHS tapes of old tv shows

Calling cards (60 minutes - or more - for $1) :thumbsup2

And I'm sure there's a whole lot more that I just can't think of right now..:goodvibes

--------------------

Other than the Dollar Stores, used books from half.com and/or a few scratch-off lottery tickets (cause I very, very rarely buy them myself)..

--------------------

Any of that and I'd be as happy as could be..:santa:

Rechargeable batteries with charger...best gift my son in law ever thought of!

Im also one who loves Bath and Bodyworks.. I love the handsoap pumps-- you can usually get those 3/$10-- I have a few friends that stick a bow on top and thats what I get and I love it! I use them in the kitchen and both bathrooms..

actually love anything bath and bodyworks and if I get a scent I dont like, you can bring it back and get one you do like..

I love the Yankee Candle car scents, anything Yankee Candle, candles of any kind.. Ive recently gotten into Scentsy warmers, the wax blocks that go in them are like $5.. $5 giftcard to Subway (can get a foot long for $5), $5 giftcard to Sonic, a pizza place, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, etc.. its just enough or nearly enough for a meal or cup of hot chocolate..

love warm, fuzzy socks.. pens, stationary, etc.. the little hand warmers they sell at Walmart by the checkout where you shake them and stick them in your pocket to keep your hands warm (nice on a cold morning).. there really is so many great ideas for $5 or less!!

I posted this on homemade presents thread, but I meant to post it here. :)

For the hard to buy for older mom/aunt/neighbor. Buy a selection of cards (get well, birthday, etc) at the dollar store (a variety of 20 would only cost $10). Place them in a nice tin or decorated box (possibley Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Joann's - 40% off coupon) along with a decent pen ($3-$5). You could also get blank address labels and print personalized address labels. Could also include a book of stamps.

Here is a coupon for $1 off 3 american greetings cards. (I shrank it when I printed since it takes up the whole page and it still scanned).

I know of a woman who is somewhat housebound. She always sent cards for every occassion. I think this will be the perfect gift for her.

I do this for my girls' teachers every year.... DH owns a solid surface countertop company, so I have him make me up some corian cutting boards with scrap material and then I go to Trader Joe's and buy a box of their specialty mix (usually $3 or less) such as gingerbread, pumpkin bread, etc. and tie it up with Tulle and pretty ribbon :santa:

I also love the hand soaps from Bath and Body. I wrap them in netting, gather at the top, and finish with a beautiful bow. It just gives it an extra special touch.

Fuzzy socks are another favorite of mine. You can actually make these look like cupcakes. Check you tube for instructions.
