We are looking for ideas for songs to be played at our son's wedding--thinking maybe modern, upbeat music--can be pop, country or classical--just seems that all the weddings around here have same (yawn) music for when guests are being seated, processional and recessional.
They are having "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri being sang at one point.....
Have you been to a wedding where a song makes you go "wow, love that, very original/different"....share your ideas please! :)

Didn't have one. We sort of eloped, basically.

But I have a request. Don't use U2's One. It's not a love song.

I wouldn't call my ceremony playlist modern by any means, but it might help get some creative juices flowing and lead to other ideas!

Congratulations to your son and his fiancée!

Well, I got married far too long ago for anything to be in vogue now! :rotfl:

I know I had "A Time for Us" from the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet played. (not sung, just piano)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tq56BN8PCQ

My favorite hymn was sung (Be Thou My Vision.)

My best friend sang Twila Paris' How Beautiful

We used Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring for our processional.

"The Wedding Song"..I loved this song as a young child and always wanted it in my wedding---cheesy perhaps, but it held good memories
"God, a Woman and a Man"-this was on the singers song list when we contacted her. Neither of us had known of the song but once we heard it (she had a cassette of her songs LOL) we both loved it.
"Ave Maria"--used this when we presented roses to our mothers during our ceremony

We had a couple more for during Communion..I'd have to look up what we used.

I don't know what the recessional was, left it up to the organist to pick :).

We are old :)

We walked out to the theme from Star Wars played on the bagpipes.

Our music was "unusual," but 3 years later, the guests still comment on it and how it fit our personalities so well:

Processional - the first 30 seconds of Christmas Canon Rock (second section looped to allow for time) by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This is really just Canon in D by Pachelbel, but with the hard-rockish drums and guitars.

Recessional - the last part of Finale from Nightmare Before Christmas (see my sig for the lyrics)

Introduction of the bridal party - main theme from Star Wars

Introduction of the bride and groom - main theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark (we love John Williams in this family!)

Bride and Groom's First Dance - Lovesong by The Cure (the original fast version)

Last Song to wrap it all up - It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by REM (kind of an in-joke...)

For my very Polish MIL - a LOT of polkas. And that's when most of the guests danced anyway.

Also for the last hour...since my DH and his brother are metalheads - Rainbow in the Dark by Dio, Turbo Lover by Judas Priest, White Wedding by Billy Idol, etc.

My DD just got married in May. I loved her choice of music.

When the guests were being seated and before the ceremony, she used a selection of the Piano Guys music. Her attendants entered to the Piano Guys version of A Thousand Years.

She actually came down the aisle to the original version of A Thousand Years - I know it is being used so much but it truly was perfect for my DD and her husband.

Her vocalist sang When God Made You.

And their recessional was We Go Together from Grease - so cute!

She played a selection of Disney love songs during the cocktail hour and dinner.

The first dance was the to the Wedding Version of Never Stop by Safety Suit - she is still getting asked for the title of this - absolutely perfect!

And the last dance was to I See the Light from Tangled.

It was a perfect night!

Married just a couple of years ago and still love listening to the songs played for our wedding.

Pre-ceremony included:
Follow Me - John Denver
Have a Little Faith in Me - john Hiatt
One Love - Hootie and the Blowfish
When You've Found the One - Melissa Etheridge
something by Rod Stewart I can't recall

I walked in to The Beatles' Here Comes the Sun

We walked out to I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash

I heard this at a second go-around wedding

Brittany Spears: Ooops, I did it again!

The first dance song!

They have a very good sense of humor:lmao:

As far as the dancing was concerned, we had a nice mix of soul, rock, punk, rockabilly, standards & indie. She wasn't going to have a wedding without some Michael Bublé or the Beatles, I wasn't going to have a wedding without Sam Cooke or Social Distortion.

Here's one song I heard through the selection process that we both decided we needed to add:
We Were Young - Brett Dennen

I actually ended up axing a lot of the music we wanted - which I guess is better than the opposite, I suppose.

Ours was a second marriage for both of us at my MIL's house.
As we started the ceremony, a Mr. Softee truck drove down the street and stopped nearby. So that was our music! :rotfl:

I told the organist to play whatever she liked as the guests were being seated. When my grandma and parents were being seated, a soloist sang Ave Maria. During the ceremony, the same soloist did Color My World (Chicago), Your Song (Elton John). While we lit the unity candle, he sang One Hand, One Heart from West Side Story. Our first dance was Neil Diamond's Hello Again.

Just a warning: if your son is getting married in a church or synagogue, they may have some limitations on what can be played.

Beyond that, I'm of no help to you. Even 25 years ago, when we got married, I was big on wanting a traditional ceremony. So, from the Ave Maria to The Wedding Song, there was nothing you could call "original." And I would change a single detail.

My wedding was a while ago but I thought it was really cool that we had the traditional wedding march and recessional played on an electric guitar. We got married at a local state park and it sounded so good outside. A guitar is a great option for people getting married outside who are on a budget and don't want canned music.

For when the wedding party entered, he played part of "Stairway to Heaven" on an acoustic guitar. I went to his house to discuss songs and he was playing it when I got there. I said, "That's pretty, what is it?" He told me "Stairway to Heaven." I thought it sounded really pretty, lots of people wouldn't know what it was, and that made it sort of funny to me.

So, I would suggest pick special songs that you like that could be played differently.
