Let's Describe the Cupcake Frosting!

I'm picky about cupcake frosting (icing?) and with the Disney cupcakes being $5ish I don't want to buy one unless it's worth the money - and the calories!

I don't like grocery store frosting - kind of gritty, very much SUGAR tasting. My ex loves this stuff. He insists on a grocery store cake for his birthday over something homemade. I like buttercream - still sweet but you can kind of taste the butter more than the sugar. (It's hard to describe this!)

It seems like you can find both kinds at Disney and it all looks so pretty! Are there basic guidelines for where each are sold? It seems that a few places like Kusfari at AK have GS frosting on the "regular" cupcakes and BC frosting on their "special cupcakes". Is it usually obvious which is which?

If I want a buttercream frosting fancy-looking Disney cupcake where is the best place to go? (I'm staying at AKL and then YC).

The only place I've had good buttercream is at Be Our Guest. Everywhere else is the disgusting sugary gritty tasteless stuff.

And I will warn you that a lot of the cupcakes were really, really cold, with the frosting practically frozen. I was disappointed in this, but now that I know, I will just grab the cupcakes to bring back to the resort so that they can come to room temperature.

Can't help you with the type of frosting you prefer, because I am a good old sugar and lard girl! hahahaha

The best ones with high quality frosting - the Master's Cupcake at BOG, and any of the cupcakes at Starring Roles in HS. The chocolate peanut butter one is to die for! Otherwise, any cupcakes you find at a QS or a dessert party are made with the grocery store stuff. There's Sprinkles at DS also, which is kind of in between grocery store quality and high quality, IMO. You can get a cheap "frosting shooter" at Sprinkles and taste the frosting before you commit to the whole cupcake if you want. :)

The red velvet cheesecake cupcake is to die for. It only has a thin layer of frosting which covers a gorgeous 'dollop' of cheesecake topping on top of the moist red velvet cupcake. The star of Starring Rolls IMHO

I had a Santa Mickey cupcake in December--the CM even made me take a (throughly embarrassing) selfie with it (and her) because it matched my ear hat. I ended up throwing half of it away. They can be really pretty, but like others have said, it's really just a mountain of catering-grade frosting. Like a supermarket birthday cake with way too much icing.

Thank you so much for the info. Saved me the money, the calories, and the waiting in line!

Im sure they've since replaced them with cupcakes, but when I was staying at Beach Club a few years ago The Beach Club Market Place had some cakes that had like the most perfect buttercream icing...I had a piece every night in our room, worth a peak if you happen to be in the Boardwalk area.

I would never buy the cupcakes at Disney. They are pretty, but that's it! A small cake with tons of yucky icing. I love cupcakes, but usually have to make my own.

I tend to agree about the cupcakes being disappointing. I have had good ones at Starring Rolls. However, we had a peppermint chocolate one at Sunshine Day at DHS after xmas. The frosting was very light and fluffy, a little more whipped creamish than most of the Disney ones. It was excellent! I also like a good buttercream, but it's hard to find on property.

I am a cake lover, and luckily had a wonderful cake that I ordered for our anniversary, but other than that we all picked different desserts/snacks this trip and really enjoyed them. I really enjoyed the mickey head sugar cookie that you could get at a bunch of places. Very soft and kinda cake-y. Mmmmm . . .

But DH and I are back on the no sugar regime after going through the dreaded three-day sugar detox. Feel better already - but all those WDW treats were worth it (well, almost all of them!).

I really like the frosted sugar cookies too. I got snowflake this time. I think the cookies are more of a softer shortbread, kind of like the cookie bouquet places use. I have a sugar cookie recipe that I use that mimics this. The frosting isn't that dreaded hard royal icing either. It's kind of a softer, better tasting fondant or glaze. Universal has some good cookies, better than WDW I think, in their Suess area. The chocolate frosted chocolate chip cookie Mickey head is good too.

I too am off the sugar again until my son's birthday party, right before Valentine's, and then of course Valentine's. I do feel better and can feel the bloat and fat going away:) It's definitely hard though, especially since DS and DH still eat the stuff. I just don't even look in the pantry except to reach in for my tea or coconut oil.

Luckily, the kids are back at their apartments, and it is just DH and me, so clearing out all the sugar foods from the house was easy. But writing my dining reviews over on the other thread, and coming here makes it a bit harder - LOL! I have been thinking about that dang sugar cookie since I mentioned it above! Good luck leaving out the sugar! It really has changed our lives, when we do it faithfully. Weight comes off, belly goes down, and so do the cholesterol numbers. Aches and pains go away, too!

I had a great one at the Boardwalk bakery. I'm picky about my cake and frosting and so far this is the only one that lived up to my standards. It was a strawberry cupcake.

I enjoy desserts, but find most of them cloyingly sweet. About every other trip, I'll see a strawberry or lemon type (my weakness) cupcake that is so cute I have to have it and it tastes like eating sugar. Just put a packet of sugar in your mouth - that's what it tastes like - dry, gross, sugar. They're so pretty though!
