Well, it sounds like things are going fairly well in your part of the world. I'm also glad that your DS took the hint (well, I guess you couldn't really call that a hint, could you? ).

I am not known for my subtleness at any time let alone after a couple of martini's

I took off Monday and Tuesday because I was about to lose my mind over these classes I'm taking. Got up to come to work this morning (even left a little early), and as I drive by my uncle's driveway, I see what looked suspiciously like a pile of manure. I stopped the car, backed up to check, and that's exactly what it was.

Oh crap! Sorry, couldn't help myself

I quickly went back to the house and started calling horses. I got four. We have five. Long story short, I did finally locate him and put him with the other four I had in the barn. I just shut that particular pasture off until DH can check the fence.

Soooo, I was late coming to work, hot, sweaty, and beet red in the face from my morning's activities!

Them darn animals can be worse than kids....

One very enjoyable thing happened today though. The Supt. came by to see me. Said he'd heard I was frustrated and unhappy, so he wanted to check on me, because my "high level of expertise was an asset to the district". Then he went on to say that he had been trying to text messages to me, but I hadn't been responding. I looked at him and said, "You took my phone." His eyebrows shot up, and he was obviously embarrassed. Then I added, "By the way, someone I know called it last week accidentally, and it hasn't been turned off yet even though I turned it in several weeks ago." That was one embarrassed man. He couldn't get out of my office fast enough!

I had to go get DD from school, I think the antibiotics along with the sinus drainage are really getting to her stomach. The antibiotic has a stomach warning. She is clammy and gray......On the way, I kept thinking of the look on idiots face and your internal chuckling! I too was chuckling........You are right, priceless...... humm, wonder if you will soon be getting your phone back

Animals are always on the wrong side of the door, the fence etc.....At least mine are. They practically take you out weaving over your feet to get out the door and then they look at you all pathetic when you close it and don't immediatly let them back in.

Dinner was wonderful - best meal we've had in months and we're still talking about it. Went to Costco earlier in the day and got ribeyes and HUGE crab legs. Fixed those along with the spice cake with the vanilla frosting. The crab was so succulent and my goodness, the legs were enormous. The meat pulled from them was amazing. Steaks were done perfectly and were juicy and tender. And the cake - well we just ate like pigs and consumed big pieces of that as well. DS took the cake back to Boulder and has been munching on that this week!

DD is finally on the mend. Missed 6 out of 10 days of school, Ugh. She might have been sick but her feet have grown a full size in exactly 1 month. We had to go find her new shoes last night. Not such an easy task when they must be solid black, and I do mean solid black. No 2 tone black/gray, no gray or white logos etc. Even the logo must be all black. Yeah, good luck with that one! Believe it or not, Payless has the best selection. I have never ever bought Payless shoes for either of the kids, guess I am kind of a shoe snob, they always wore Stride Rite. Anyway, Payless has been where we scored the past 2 pairs and we have our eyes on a pair of solid black "Ugg" style boots for winter. DH wanted to know why DD would want to wear slippers to school, he is such a fashion moron

Your poor daughter!! I saw that she came home again today - I hope that she finally gets over all of this crud!!!

DS received a "bid" from Sigma Phi Epsilon and decided to join, so my Darling DS is now a Frat Boy! Oh dear, the visions of Animal House are racing thru my head! He is now a member of their flag football team and having a ball.

Congratulations to your son!!! DS still hasn't decided if he's going to pledge or not. They start their initial activities this Friday, so he's still thinking about it. If I had to guess right now, I would say he will not pledge this fall but may consider it in the spring. But what do I know? I'm just his mother!!!

Saturday night we had a martini poker night with the boys. Okay, so I had a couple of martini's and made the following comment to DS's girly. "I know we make you uncomfortable, but you and DS spend a great deal of time doing things with your little brothers (same age as DD) and your family, remember, he has a sister who misses him too." That was all I said, I was nice, not judgemental or snotty. Just matter of fact. DS sent me a text on Saturday night, shortly after I said what I did and he said he will take his sister to go do whatever she wants next weekend. I told him, you don't need to take her anywhere, you just need to give her a little bit of your time, she misses you. DS and Girly came over the next day for dinner. Of course the promise of steak probably helped in his decision. While I was cooking dinner they and DD went and curled up in my bed and all 3 of them were watching a movie. DD was smack in the middle happy as a clam! Nothing like a 10 year old for a chaperone

Not much else going on, the planes all stayed in the air last weekend and other than the huge traffic jambs when everyone leaves the airbase at the same time the event was a great success. I was awoken from my nap by some hot shot Thunderbird pilot who was enjoying himself buzzing 10 feet above my house (okay, not 10 feet, but the house rattled like it was 10 feet)

I wish we had something like that to see around here, but the darned mountains get in the way!!!!

Now, Reno gears up for Street Vibrations which is a huge motorcyle event. There will be bikers everywhere next week! Thankfully, the events are in town, not in my back yard.

Actually, I forgot to tell you that we actually traded our Harley for a BMW motorcycle last month. I was initially against the idea, but DH really didn't like some aspects of our bike and actually thought it was unsafe (no anti-lock brakes, very heavy, etc.). So we bought a 1200RT, which is a touring bike. We both love it and it is VERY comfortable to ride on!! So we're still bikers but we have moved to a different neighborhood.

Sarah Palin further enamored my DH, she actually knows how to pronounce Nevada! Unlike most people, commentators and even the actors on CSI Las Vegas

I think there are a lot of baby boomer aged men with a Sarah Palin fantasy. I know, I live with one of them!!!

Not much else to tell around here. Work is still very busy. Some stresses as we are going through a reorganization (yet again), but we won't know anything until the end of the month. I think I'm too far down on the food chain to be worried about my job, but you never can tell, so I'm just not going to think about it . . .

Animals pick such convenient times to find holes in the fences, don't they? When I was a kid, the cattle always got out when our folks were an hour away picking up the new baby chicks to bring home. So us kids were running around with Grandpa trying to get them back in!!

Those crab legs sound heavenly! I'm so glad you had a nice dinner and you know with that homemade cake your DS is now the envy of the dorm My DS took all leftovers including the steak tidbits back with him. He said the last steak plate he took home had all his floor mates stopping by to see what smelled so good, the brat wouldn't share either

On an related/unrelated note I did contact the shrink my Ped recommended and left a message.
There are all kinds of weird bugs going around the schools, I think a lot of it has to do with the kids being penned up all summer due to the intense smoke we had for almost the entire summer. The health dept. recommended they be kept indoors with windows and doors closed. Hummmm, sounds like a winter environment and lo and behold, here it is September and we are having winter like outbreaks of Strep, Upper Respiratory infections, colds and stomach flu's. Uh huh, me thinks the health dept. needs to rethink their guidelines.

DH's company announced last week a voluntary separation plan for those over 55........this week they announced that beginning in Nov. they will be implementing a involuntary separation plan....crap, give me the Xanax. They are talking some pretty big numbers, 20% or more of their workforce. DH is over 50 but not 55 and has been there for 15 years, I hope and pray he has some protection be it age or seniority or both. Anyone seen my Xanax.

Congratulations on your new toy! Years ago, mother and daddy used to ride a lot. He's had Harleys, but as he got older, he always prefered the Honda Gold Wings. Of course, the Harley quality has increased dramatically since that time. Many years ago, they went through a bad time of sorts and the quality was lacking, but I know that changed quite a few years ago.

Not much else to tell around here. Work is still very busy. Some stresses as we are going through a reorganization (yet again), but we won't know anything until the end of the month. Sounds like a nice family outing, I hope you have a great time - are the trees starting to turn yet? I noticed a couple of small yellow leaves on our Birch trees the other day.....fall is a coming

DS went to the Colorado-West Virginia game last night (it was on ESPN). He painted his face and body black (what a kid!) and stormed the field with the other crazy students when CU won the game in overtime 17-14. Talked to him this morning, he is very hoarse from screaming.

How fun and those overtime wins are always soooo exciting! Your DS is getting into the school spirit. UNR has only had 1 home game (Gramblin State) so far and then they have been on the road getting their hinies handed to them. Coach Ault thinks the experience and exposure of playing top ranked national teams is good for them. I'm thinking the Boosters do not agree based on what the paper has had to say about it of course, the Boosters are always unhappy when we are not winning. So far, no WAC conference play. DS can't wait for them to come back home, he "finally gets to sit in the student section"

From what I remember from 25 years ago, you get a bid card which is an invitation to pledge. If you want to accept, on Bid Day you sign the card and return it to some location so that they know. Then, they designate some time and place for you to meet with the other new pledges, get introduced to the fraternity/sorority as a whole and start your official joinder. At least this is how it worked when I was in college. I was in a sorority back then, although my college was small and the sororities and fraternities were local ones and not affiliated with any national houses.

What is "Rush"

Rush is the formal process where you learn about the fraternities/sororities, you meet their members, they meet you, and you decide if you are interested in joining one, and they decide if they are interested in you and want to give you a bid. Around here, it's usually a week long series of events where you go to the houses, whittle down your choices to a few preferences, and then indicate which houses you are interested in pledging. So let's say you look at 6 houses on the first night. The second night, you whittle your choices down and only re-visit the 3 you liked best from the first night. Then, on the last night, you go back and visit your favorite to make sure that's where you want to join (if you want to join; you are always free to change your mind and decline). It's more than what I just wrote (there are other rules about quiet periods where the Greeks can't contact you) and there's some sort of matching process involved at large schools, but I don't have any idea of how it works specifically at CU - this is just the basics for most Greek recruitment. There are also informal rush parties held usually before the formal rush process I described above occurs. Those are usually just parties thrown at the houses themselves, and truthfully speaking, many involve alcohol. My school was much less formal than what I described above, a lot of it is what friends of my kids have done before and told me about.

Yes, we are starting to see some color. There are a lot of Elk up at Estes and we love to go up there and watch them this time of year.

Well, considering how much we paid a consultant for the last few months to help the one who just quit ($30,000+), I'm sure we can get you some assistance...

Smart horse!!!

Oh yes! He's the only one in the pasture who isn't registered, and he's by far the smartest one of the bunch. Long before we got the other horses (he was DD's first horse after her Shetland pony) and just had a small barn, he kept getting out of his stall, and we couldn't figure out how. One day after DD fed him and left, I guess he got in a hurry to go out to the pasture, because she heard a noise at the gate (the gate had a 2"x6" piece of wood that raised up to open the gate and went down to close it). When she turned around, Smokey had opened the gate and taken one step out, partially opening the gate. She yelled his name, and he pulled the gate shut with his chin and knocked the piece of wood back down to latch the gate. Then he backed up and tried to look innocent. It's amazing how smart he is.

There was also the time that he opened the latch on the feedroom door and climbed up into the feedroom to help himself to the feed stored there. When we built the new barn several years ago, we had to go back and put a second set of door latches up, because we first had a sliding bar to latch the stall doors shut. While a horse inside the stall couldn't reach it (we had at least learned that much from the old stalls), Smokey kept sliding the bar over with his nose and letting out the horses we had put up for one reason or another. DH made sure the second set was "Smokey proof". It's amazing how fast he can be trained to do pretty much anything.

DS can't wait for them to come back home, he "finally gets to sit in the student section"

Ya'll have a great weekend! When I got up this morning, all I could think about was that I get to sleep late tomorrow morning!

It would take A LOT of assistance!!! I had to take Accounting for a semester in college for my Public Administration major. I was great at the beginning of the semester with the "What is a debit?" and "What is a credit?" questions and worked hard to get A's then. But as the semester progressed, I simply didn't have much of a clue. Thankfully, my hard work early paid off before I started "tanking" in the class. I was thrilled to get out of there with a "B".

Oh yes! He's the only one in the pasture who isn't registered, and he's by far the smartest one of the bunch. Long before we got the other horses (he was DD's first horse after her Shetland pony) and just had a small barn, he kept getting out of his stall, and we couldn't figure out how. One day after DD fed him and left, I guess he got in a hurry to go out to the pasture, because she heard a noise at the gate (the gate had a 2"x6" piece of wood that raised up to open the gate and went down to close it). When she turned around, Smokey had opened the gate and taken one step out, partially opening the gate. She yelled his name, and he pulled the gate shut with his chin and knocked the piece of wood back down to latch the gate. Then he backed up and tried to look innocent. It's amazing how smart he is.

There was also the time that he opened the latch on the feedroom door and climbed up into the feedroom to help himself to the feed stored there. When we built the new barn several years ago, we had to go back and put a second set of door latches up, because we first had a sliding bar to latch the stall doors shut. While a horse inside the stall couldn't reach it (we had at least learned that much from the old stalls), Smokey kept sliding the bar over with his nose and letting out the horses we had put up for one reason or another. DH made sure the second set was "Smokey proof". It's amazing how fast he can be trained to do pretty much anything.

Wow. That is one really smart horse.

Hey, I have an idea!! Maybe Smokey can be trained for the school business officer job?!?!?

Rush is the formal process where you learn about the fraternities/sororities, you meet their members, they meet you, and you decide if you are interested in joining one, and they decide if they are interested in you and want to give you a bid.

Thanks for the explanation. All DS said was that SigEp didn't do pledging, they presented their candidates with bid cards. I of course am clueless in these matters. Stupid me, couldn't sleep last night and was watching a show on Hazing Nightmares. Why oh why do I do this to myself

Yes, we are starting to see some color. There are a lot of Elk up at Estes and we love to go up there and watch them this time of year.

When we were on our road trip in June we were out on the California coast, up near Eureka and we came acrosss several herd of Elk. They were right along the beach which I found surprising. Not sure why it was surprising it was just weird, beach, waves, sand and herds of Elk. I had never seen them in the wild, they were huge and beautiful. My FIL was beside himself to be so close.

Sounds like your DS needs a home game to put on HIS face paint!!!!!

And to think that all these times when I saw students on televised games who were all painted up like that I always thought, "Who on earth would put all that paint on?" Now I know...

Sandy's son is not the only goof ball out there. Actually, it is kind of funny how similar in characteristics our DS's are. In the yearbook there is a picture of DS with a silver tinsel wig, a teal and black face and the highschool letters painted on his chest, this was his weekly "outfit" at the time for the basketball games. Going NV Blue will not be a stretch for him he loves that kind of stuff

DH had to take some accounting classes - I got an A he was so clueless and still is. He is an engineer and the "theory" involved in accounting totally befuddled him. Now, when I say the dishwasher is making a funny noise he is on it

That's exactly what he is - just a plain, old pasture horse. DH has been after me for the last several years to let somebody else have Smokey (we've actually had several offers from people in our circle who know what a good horse he is), but he's going to live out his life where I can make sure he's well cared for. He's the horse who really "taught" DD how to ride and gave her the confidence to learn to really work her horses. That boy is going to be a pasture ornament (which he really enjoys!).

DD called a few minutes ago and is coming home early. She wanted me to get her a doctor's appt. She's been getting a little sicker each day, and I tried to persuade her to go Wednesday, but, no, she doesn't listen to me. So, now, she sounds really sick and decided to miss her last class and come home. Hopefully, it won't be anything too bad.
