Hey Melissa!!! Just noticed you're filing YOUR taxes today, just like us. Guess we're even more alike than I thought. With DH being self-employed, this is an annual event!!!

I'm just a huge procrastinator! I do that kind of stuff every day for work and put ours off for as long as possible! Stupid really, I keep all the docs together and it really is just a matter of the input but I haven't filed before Oct. in at least 10years! ( I am glad the IRS has done away with the extra extension in August, I used to have fun coming up with the "lame" excuse of the year)

I actually totally forgot they were due and remembered at about 6 last night (I remembered on Friday but hey, why be ahead of the game). I was a little miffed to realize that I lost the child credit of $1000 since DS was 17 at the end of last year. I came walking out of the den, told him to get a job, he owed us a grand!

You're obviously more tech savvy than we are. With DH's business stuff we use an accountant to figure things out. We own a 1/5th interest in an office building with some of DH's former law partners, so the accountant can figure out all of the mind-blowing stuff (at least it is for me!!)

I'm actually not very tech savvy but Turbo Tax is easy (DH the techi installs it, transfers the prior years data and all I do is fill in the blanks and hit the send button. We don't really have anything that complicates matters and I got tired of forking out big bucks to a CPA so I tried the TT a couple of years back. Love it!.

Quick update here. It's been a rough couple of weeks.

The professional development session went great!

I got the Title VI app in the mail Friday afternoon (special board meeting on Wednesday to approve it).

Downside - Wednesday afternoon (as I was waiting for the board meeting to start), DH called and said that when he got home he noticed that our 17 1/2 year old cat's condition had deteriorated (which we knew was coming). He felt like he needed to take her to be put down (afraid she was suffering and would have had a bad night). We've had her since DD was 3. She named her Doc so she could say, "What's up, Doc?" (she liked Bugs Bunny ).

The week before, our lab mix died. I didn't mention it, because I got too upset every time I thought about her. Our Chihuahua LOVED that dog. They would fight (Gypsy would get down on her belly, so Chachi could reach her) and chase each other all over the yard. He's still looking for her.

Then Thursday night, DD called in tears. She had had one of BF's mother's horses for a year or so (barrel horse). She hasn't had a lot of time to ride due to school. Her dad said that he wanted the horse to go home for the winter since she wasn't riding him.

When he got home, someone saw him and made a significant offer on him - about $6000 - $7000 (he had improved a lot with DD riding him). The bottom has fallen out of the horse market (she raises horses), and BF's mother needs to sell him. She has had some large vet bills, and her feed bill runs about $1000 a month. She has about 20 horses, and nothing is selling (still have to feed though).

DD was heartbroken and pouted and, quite frankly, did not behave as well as she's been raised to behave. She really was feeling sorry for herself, because she was attached to the horse, and BF was very upset, because DD was so upset. I tried to talk to DD and reason with her, but she told me that she didn't want to be rational.

I found out this morning that BF's mother felt so bad about possibly selling the horse that she offered to sell her own personal horse (that she raised from a baby and loves dearly) to a friend of a friend of ours. I called DD when I got to the hotel and told her that she'd better be glad Paul didn't actually buy that horse. I also told her that I was very unimpressed with her behavior (think spoiled brat ) and that she ought to be ashamed of herself. (Let me add here that DD did not act this way to BF's mother, but she did at home, and I know that BF knew just how upset she was and gave his mother a hard time about selling the horse.)

DD was mortified when she found out about the other horse going up for sale (and thoroughly upset that she had upset BF's mother so much, but I asked her what did she expect the way she had been carrying on...). At one point she was crying, but, as I told her dad, I told her exactly what she needed to hear. I also told her that I told BF's mother that she needed to stop worrying about this and tell the kids that she was sorry it was working out this way, but that one day when they had bills to pay, they might have a little better understanding of real life.

I was sooo mad at that child of mine. She knows better than to behave like that. Sometimes I think that college is a good place for bad habits to develop (as in "focus the world on me").


Okay, vent over...



The hotel is great. When I checked in, she offered me an upgrade for $40 a night to one of the rooms overlooking the huge glassed atrium (with a balcony). I'll have to pay for it myself, but I took it. The Gaylord properties are gorgeous. The one in Orlando is spectacular too. The place is huge.

Concerning that room service you mentioned, I just paid $40 for a club sandwich, fries, tea, and a piece of pie. It looks like I'm going to have to force myself to go out to eat some, because my expense account only gives me about $40 a day for meals!

Y'all take care this week. I'll be in meetings most of the week, but I'll check in when I get a chance.

Well, the ski jacket has been purchased, the taxes mailed, and I sit in front of my computer once again.

Horseshowmom, I am so sorry about your animals. It is so hard when we have to say "goodbye" because they are part of the family. It will just tear me apart when Tundra goes. Hugs to you.

I can very much relate to having to have a "talk" with one of my kids like you did with your DD. It sounds like you handled it wonderfully. Kids don't realize at times that adults have to make difficult decisions, often tied to finances. Our college-aged kids live in such a sheltered world that they don't think about the day-to-day nitty gritty very often.

They can be so "adult-like" in how they handle many things, then they REALLY revert to some selfish, childlike ways. I had to have a big blowout with DS last week because he now thinks that since he got into CU, he shouldn't have to work as hard in school. There is no "coasting" allowed at this house and there will never be. You will always try hard, kiddo. And DD frustrates me with her tendencies to be a drama queen, especially regarding her health. She tends to be a bit of a hypocondriac (sp?) and can drive me nuts with some self-centeredness in this area. I love them both with all of my heart, but man, they can irritate the heck out of me.

Tomorrow is her last day of work and I think she's already feeling less pressure. Of course, there are midterms this week and it would have been nice to not have to go to work tomorrow night, but hey, life is not "perfect". You act like a professional, give them your two weeks' notice, and finish things out.

Glad that the professional development session went well and the Title VI material is out the door. You had one busy week!!

Enjoy that hotel room (sounds really nice) and spend every last dollar of the food allowance - you deserve it!!

Beneficial development on the room -

As I said, I upgraded when I checked in for $40 a night (normally closer to $90 extra a night).

Apparently, they had me over the Jack Daniels restaurant which has live music. Very loud, live music with lots and lots of cheering. Until 1 a.m.

I don't begrudge anybody their fun, but the rest of the days this week I'll have to get up early (just not this morning). So, I called the front desk and asked them to move me to one of the outside rooms that I originally had reserved. They apologized profusely for the inconvenience and offered to move me to another balcony atrium room that would not have the noise and also offered to comp me the upgrade charge for the week. So, I get the nice room, and it won't cost me the extra $160 plus tax. Things seem to be looking up.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who shakes their head at their kids sometimes. As you can tell from my story, DD does get a little melodramatic from time to time. When she was little, you had to be careful not to react too much if she fell or was sick because she could go from bad to worse really quick! I heard the term drama llama on these boards. Horses weren't the only thing DD liked to ride!

Good Morning Girls:

Long day yesterday, I was too lazy to go to the grocery store on Sunday and we were out of everything! I get this bright idea I'll hit Winco after work (the cheap place to stock up on anything in a box, a can, frozen or dairy) not putting the fact that it was the 15th of the month until I went to get to said grocery store $265 and and 2 hours later I was checked out and headed home.

Taxes done and the "send" button was pressed. Got home and my Turbo Tax says I actually could have waited til today I went ahead and finished them, afterall I certainly didn't want to have to put all those groceries away

DS's knee is doing great, he played the last 1/2 of the game on Friday and is fully participating in practices. Still swollen and sore but the Physical Therapist has been kicking his butt and he is working thru it. He has a follow up with the Orthopedist tomorrow.

This is the week of appointments: DS's braces come off today at noon Tomorrow he has the Orthopedist at 11 and Thursday the retainers go on at 12:30 - then he has 2 P.T. Appts. scattered into this mess and it is Homecoming week! Very busy in our neck of the woods.

DD Loves her new teacher. She comes home going yack, yack, yack about her I am thrilled, we made the right decision. Now the best friends mom who wasn't willing to take the risk is wishing she had but the school is not cooperating, she had her chance and chose not to take it.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your pets We have more than one tree in the yard in memory of a beloved kitty. Poor Chachi, isn't it amazing how pets bond with each other.

The hotel sounds wonderful, you enjoy every minute of it! Room service, ahhh I am so envious! My DS and I went to Vegas one time (I had a trade show and it was video game related so I took him) we stayed at Treasure island and one night we totally indulged in a room service meal. Funny how an average cheese burger turns gourmet when it is delivered under a silver dome and comes with a big price tag You know if you skipped the sandwich and just went with the pie you would stay within your meal allowance

Your DD - I agree with Sandy. Yes, she is a young adult but she is still growing and maturing and does not have a total concept of finances. We are all entitled to our meltdowns once in awhile tell DD that she had her allotment for the year Kids don't have any idea of the sacrifices that we all make because we put our kids first. As they age, they will begin to understand that and the meltdowns will become less frequent. Just the fact that she realized the sacrifice that BF's mother was willing to make shows she is not a spoiled brat she was just overwhelmed at the thought of losing her horse and didn't see the big picture.

Another fit throwing, yelling, pouting evening in my house I hid in the den and did the taxes My DS said last night that he doesn't think anyone can beat the Rockies

Yeah got the jacket - My DS's 18th b-day is next month he wants a new XBox 360. We made him buy his own many moons ago and since that is all he wants for his B-Day we are contemplating it. Have no clue about Christmas!

So far DS has not started in on the slacking, he got his notice from UNR on Friday but I am waiting. He actually took a pretty light class load this year so he doesn't have a lot of excuses. There is a new to him car riding on a 4.0if he pulls it off, maybe that will help. There are a number of articles out there about how colleges are denying previously admitted students due to their Sr. year grades. Whenever I come across one I email it to DS as a reminder.

DD the Drama Queen - Oh, I can relate to that and my is only 9. I am starting to dread the thought of the next 9 years. I think a lot of kids your DD's age are kinda hypochondiacs, they live in this world where hand sanitizer is sold by the gallon and germaphobes abound. Personally, I am a firm believer in the 10 second rule along with a little dirt don't hurt life motto.
Glad she is about done with her job and stuck out the "notice" period. Good luck to her on her mid terms.

Well girls, I have several things to get off my desk, I am going to the Ortho with DS - I have a braces coming off "Goody" bag for him with some treats he couldn't eat for the past 20 months. The bag contains "Goofy" Taffy (From our WDW trip in January, I have been saving it for him in a unopened bag that I put inside a ziplock) Blue/Red sour gummy worms, Cracker Jacks w/peanuts, some sunflower seeds and some cornnuts!

Sorry about your lack of sleep last night, but glad you ultimately scored a better room with no extra charges.

If we didn't shake our heads at our kids and give them verbal tongue-lashings from time to time, we wouldn't be doing our jobs as parents!!! It's toughest to tell those that we love most, "Hey, you're really messing up here.: But it needs to be done every now and then.

Remember, I am the Mom to the Princess of Puke - the kindergarten she went to went along with our 2 puke rule. Unless she pukes twice, don't call us because at the slighest upset she pukes. Still does The school nurse looked at me sideways when she called because DD puked. I always ask "did she do it twice" they usually answer "no" and I say "send her back to class she is not sick, something upset her" (I do talk with DD on the phone, I'm not that cold ) at first they acted all horrifed like I was the most uncaring person on the planet. Fast forward 3 years, they get it, the nurse doesn't even call me unless there is a fever or multiple puke episodes involved

This place is really something to behold. It's divided into several different sections. There are waterfalls and streams everywhere. The Delta section even has a boat ride in the canal that runs through it.

Plus, they have a shuttle to an incredible outlet mall that has a Rainforest Cafe and an Aquarium restaurant (I know it won't cost anymore to eat there than it did here last night!

I think that it's so neat that you have a "goody bag" for your son when he gets the braces off. What a thoughtful mother you are. I am sure he will love it!!

Also glad that you made the right decision with your DD regarding moving her to the new teacher. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith, but it can be SO worth it. This is a 180 degree turn from a month ago, isn't it? Too bad about the best friend, but I think that her mom made a bad gambling choice that unfortunately her kid has to live with.

Glad that your DS hasn't been hit with the senioritis bug. Mine needed corralling to head into the right direction, but I think he'll be okay. Especially with Mom watching his every move.

I hope your son is right about no one beating the Rockies. We at least get to rest some and I can go to bed at a decent hour!!!

This is hilarious. One of my greatest motherly "victories" was getting them to actually make it to the bathroom in time. I hate cleaning up these messes. Thankfully, DH was very good at using the wet-dry vac on them while I cleaned up the clothes and bedding. There's a good reason that I kept him all of these years.

This is a 180 degree turn from a month ago, isn't it? Too bad about the best friend, but I think that her mom made a bad gambling choice that unfortunately her kid has to live with.

Glad that your DS hasn't been hit with the senioritis bug. Mine needed corralling to head into the right direction, but I think he'll be okay. Especially with Mom watching his every move.

I hope your son is right about no one beating the Rockies. We at least get to rest some and I can go to bed at a decent hour!!!

I think girls have some sort of innate "drama" button that they can choose to turn on and off at will.

Yeah, I agree about the drama. While DD didn't get into the "girl" type drama (if you know what I mean - bickering with others, that sort of thing), she had it in these other ways.

(She also could do the vomiting thing when she got upset or nervous, so I can sympathize with that too, Melissa!).

This is hilarious. One of my greatest motherly "victories" was getting them to actually make it to the bathroom in time. I hate cleaning up these messes. Thankfully, DH was very good at using the wet-dry vac on them while I cleaned up the clothes and bedding. There's a good reason that I kept him all of these years.

Lucky you! My DH doesn't "do" puke. It upsets his delicate stomach (insert heavy sarcasm here ).

One night in the middle of the night, DD was really, really sick (migraines and vomiting). It was everywhere, and I was having to take care of her too. I asked for some help, and he just couldn't do it (he's normally a great guy, but this isn't something he does). I got her cleaned up and back in bed, went in the bathroom and yanked all the carpet up off the floor (small bathroom ), and told him that I guess he could handle putting vinyl in there on his own.

I am laughing at the visual image I have in my head of you doing just that. Good for you!!! Carpet in bathrooms is SO wrong in many ways!!!
