We had dinner at Ohana last weekend. We had a ball and, although I certainly found enough to eat, Im not at all fond of the new menu--it seems unbalanced and, to my taste, has a lot of greasy, heavy items on it.
So lets play Fix 'Ohanas Menu. Ill go first.
Heres the current menu:
Fried Wontons served with peanut sauce, chimichurri sauce and harissa
Mixed greens with a honey-lime dressing
Spicy sweet-and-sour shrimp
Honey-coriander chicken wings
Marinated Sirloin Steak
Asian Barbecue Pork Loin
Mesquite Grilled Turkey
Hawaiian Pork-sausage with pineapple teriyaki glaze
Maui Scalloped Potatoes
Stir-fried Vegetables
'Ohana bread pudding a la mode with Bananas Foster Sauce
*
Now, lets see what Id do toOhanas menu:
Fried wontons served with peanut sauce, chimichurri sauce and harissa
A wonton is a little Chinese dumpling. What theyre serving here is a fried wonton skin--those greasy little chips one associates with downscale Chinese restaurants. And the sauces that go with them are nothing to get excited about, either. Id remove these from the menu and substitute actual Chinese dumplings such as pot stickers and possibly steamed dumplings. With this Id serve a ponzu sauce and a better peanut sauce than they have now.
---
Mixed greens with a honey-lime dressing
I really liked these and would keep them on the menu.
--
Spicy sweet-and-sour shrimp
I really liked these, too. They were a lot more tender and had a better flavor than the skewered shrimp they used to serve. Id keep them.
--
Honey-coriander chicken wings
Not bad--sticky and heavily flavored with five-spice powder. I actually had quite a few of these. But Id remove them from the menu because theyre so extremely messy and we already have pot stickers which have a similar flavor.
--
From the grill:
Marinated Sirloin Steak
Asian Barbecue Pork Loin
Mesquite Grilled Turkey
Hawaiian Pork-sausage with pineapple teriyaki glaze
Im inclined to remove the pork which is rather tough and dry and substitute chicken. I wasnt that fond of the sausage but a lot of people seem to like it so Ill let it stay.
--
Maui Scalloped Potatoes
A lot of people seem to like these, but all I can say is that things must be pretty tough in Maui if theyre serving these. It seemed to be nothing more than oiled potatoes layered in a pan and baked. Theyre greasy and fairly tasteless. A good substitute starch would be the bread they used to serve at Ohana. Or rice. Or both.
--
Stir-fried Vegetables
Again, the word greasy makes an appearance. The vegetables are mainly snap peas and red pepper strips which have been stir fried but not flavored. Oil coated vegetables. Yummy. Id substitute any steamed vegetable. Im partial to Broccoli.
--
'Ohana bread pudding a la mode with Bananas Foster Sauce
Im not a dessert eater and when I stuck my fork in this to sample the bread pudding, I was glad I wasnt planning to eat dessert. This was heavy, soggy, and heavily flavored with artificial vanilla. I say bring back the pineapple with caramel sauce.
--
To summarize, my rebuilt Ohana menu is:
A selection of Chinese dumplings with ponzu sauce and peanut sauce
Mixed greens with a honey-lime dressing
Spicy sweet-and-sour shrimp
Marinated Sirloin Steak
Chicken
Mesquite Grilled Turkey
Hawaiian Pork-sausage with pineapple teriyaki glaze
That bread they used to serve
Basmati rice
Steamed broccoli
Pineapple with caramel sauce
Your turn.
