Does anyone know of a place to buy furniture for the American Girl dolls - other than the AG stores? My daughter received McKenna for her birthday and really wants McKenna's bed, but it is over $200 and I just can't bring myself to pay that much - especially if we take a last minute trip to Disney in Dec.!

Check Toys R Us. They have Journey Girls furniture. DD got a loft bed for her AG doll there, and it is made of wood and very sturdy. It looks very similar to DD's loft bed, and she loves it. It also has a built in desk, tv, bookcase, etc. Good luck! :goodvibes

ETA: Looks like they still carry the bed...http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4082098

hmmmm - the thing about that loft bed set is it isn't just a bed - it is a loft bed with all those little accessories (doll sized charlotte web book) and the little hamster wheel etc. and McKenna's desk too.

You can buy other brand furniture all over the place that is the right size for the doll (I have great nieces who love this doll stuff)

But does your daughter want just a bed or all that other stuff too? I did a quick Google search and it looks like there are several creative people who have been making their own versions.

Target has generation girl stuff. Also if you don't mind second hand you can find some great priced things on Ebay and Craigslist. Or even consignment shops.

I just bought really cute canopy beds for my daughters at Walmart.com. Joann's and Michaels craft stores carry a cute line of clothes for the dolls. Outfits are $9.99, and then I always use a coupon.

I didn't mind shelling out for the AG doll, but the rest of my stuff is off brand.

My dd also wants that bed. My dh told her no way, you could buy an ipod with that much money!

Target has the Our Generation furniture. We had a few pieces as kids, and it held up fairly well. I don't know if the quality has changed since then or not. Also check walmart and toys r us- they have furniture for their 18" doll lines, as well.

Local craft shows is another option, though prices vary crafter to crafter- my grandparents bought us a lot of handmade doll furniture that's held up very well- my little cousins play with mine when they come over, and it still looks brand new.

I agree that she may not want just the bed- she might be more interested in the accesories that come with it- you could try checking e-bay to see what people are selling just the accesories for, but it's probably pretty expensive.

I bought the $20 unfinished bed from IKEA, stained it dark brown and sewed bedding in almost identical fabric to Felicity's. Since it is discontinued and goes for $300 on eBay I had to get creative. My daughter loves it and I don't know if she even realized at the time that it wasn't the 'real' deal. Of course she does now but she doesn't care. ;)

If things aren't retired you can sometimes score a decent deal on eBay, especially if you can jump in at the last minute.

Target on line. They have things online that they don't have in the stores. I bought the bunk beds a few years ago.

I just ordered DD a really cute day bed with trundle off of Etsy. The seller makes bedding too and we customized the colors/patterns for the bedding. I'm so excited, DD is going to love it and it didn't eat up my whole Christmas budget for her.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. I showed dd the one at Target and she loved - said it was better than McKenna's bed! And, $55 is much easier to swallow than $225! :thumbsup2

I recently purchased the triple bunk bed from Badger Basket. I think it was from Amazon, but I believe Walmart also sells them. It was an affordable way to get multiple dolls into a smaller space. We have the twin bunk bed also and it's lasted quite a few years.

HA! That's my hack!!! :rotfl2: Too funny. I was coming to share the Ikea bed idea but thought I'd see if anyone had already mentioned it. It's an amazing deal. But as someone else mentioned, find out what it is your daughter wants before you go buy a different bed. If she wants a loft bed like in the catalog then the Ikea bed won't work, but the one from TRU/Target would. If she just wants a bed - Ikea. If she wants the accessories - see how many you can make/find someone to make and compare costs.

You can find the loft beds on ebay without the accessories but I don't think that would work. I think the appeal to that purple loft bed is all the stuff that comes with it.

LOL small world!!

I love the hack and have it filed away for DD's 6 dolls, I just need to find the time to do it.

I bet you could hack the ikea doll bed into a loft. We hacked a real Ikea bunk bed for DS16 into a loft. (Need to post that to ikeahacker).
I guess I need to go buy a doll bed and figure it out.

Oh my goodness - thank you SO MUCH for posting about this!!!! My DD and her friends are totally into AG. Us moms are trying to find alternative (CHEAPER) solutions to some of these things and this will be so perfect!!!

To the OP - I was going to suggest Target's Our Generation line as others have. They have sales as well and will knock off 25% or so. And Target will also offer coupons for OG stuff as well so keep an eye out online or sign up to get coupons mailed to you.

Also, keep an eye out for American Girl online sales. I signed up for emails so I know right away when they have a good 'last chance' sale. But even some of their last chance stuff is still pricey! I get better deals on their last chance stuff on the clothing and accessories.
