I've owned a digital SLR since 2008, but really haven't spent any time getting to know it. I use it here and there, but haven't done anything really with it, much, at all.

In April, we took our annual Spring Break trip to Disney, and I longingly wished I had brought the DSLR. Well, shortly after arriving home, we booked a return trip to WDW Memorial Day week, so we could return before our annual passes expired, and I took the DSLR.

Within two days of use, I took over 500 pics, and was surprised at how much easier the DSLR was to use than my trusty point and shoot (wha.....?). It's defintely going with me at all times now.

But here's my question. You only learn things once you begin using them and I found that I need a good "in-between" lens than the ones I have. I have an 18-55 lens and a 75-300 lens, but at times, found myself needing something in between these lengths. Anyone know of a good range? What should I be looking for? My camera is a Cannon xTi.

What do you want to spend?

I'm not a Canon shooter, so I'm going to speak generically. The answer is.... The next question. VVFF is correct in requesting a budget, but there are a few more questions that should be answered also. First, do you mind changing lenses, all-in-one versus more specialized? Do you require this lens to work better in low light? Low light lenses (AKA fast(er) lenses) tend to be more expensive. What focal lengths do you use or require of the lens. For this I would right click on your images, then properties to check the EXIF information on your images to ascertain what you personally use most. After gathering that information, then that should get you started in the direction of the correct lens for YOU. Then start looking for your lens that fits, starting with your name brand and then the third party, Tamron, Sigma, etc.

The reason we go through these machinations is that each of has our own style. I have looked at enough of the regular's images on this thread that most of the time I don't have to look at who posted because I recognize their style. For me personally, I like sharp, bright colors in my images, night(lowlight) photography and I do a lot of motorsports. I don't normally do HDR. So my lens kit matches what I shoot. As I branch out, I will slowly add a lens or two to match what I want to shoot. Lens selection really is a personal preference. Good luck in your search and post some of your images. There are others here who are real technical experts and will assist with specific brand lenses.

Depends on your budget but the Canon 18-135IS may be a good fit
Also, consider replacing the 75-300 with the Canon 55-250IS - it's a much better telephoto lens and it's only $199
