What's the buzz on this since I saw the trailer before Alfie today? It looks like fun and Jude Law being in it is a excuse for me

A Series of Unfortunate Events is an enormously popular children's series by Lemony Snickett. Dark and evil Uncle inherits children who have money. The writing style is campy, tongue-in-cheek and totally captivating.

We are having a hard time with the books here in my household. Even my 13yodd is not enjoying the series. I don't know why. I expected to love it and don't.

HA, but I will go see the movie!

I'm still curious about the film, normally can't get into this kind but Jude Law is becoming a huge factor(3 films in less than a month is my idea of fun:) )

Should I read the books beforehand?

I'm sure you don't have to read the books first, to enjoy the movie.

We're anxiously awaiting it here. We're big fans of the books and my cousin is the movie's producer. Our son, who's in college in Los Angeles, is going to get to go to the premiere. :bounce:

And parents of younger children, be aware....the movie is pretty dark and the opening storyline (kids' parents die in a big fire) might be too intense for little ones.

My sister has been reading those books and she loves them. She really wants to see the movie. I think they are a bit strange.

I never fully understood why people like them, I don't enjoy them but that's IMHO.

I am sure this series will be better served as a movie. It is very odd, dark, and frightening. Not a "G" rating that is for sure.

We LOVE Lemony Snickett in our house! My DS's have read all 11 of the books. I can see where some people might not like the dark humor, but we think it is great. If you get a chance to read at least the first book before you see the movie, you will have an idea of the style and if the movie is your style.

I think the books are very clever and tongue in cheek. However, I will not be taking my kids to see the movie---they're too young I think. I would say 8 and up...

My family loves lemony Snicket.....they wait for each additional book in the series almost as ferently as the Harry potter series....

We definately will be going to see the movie...

I think the people who love the books the best are those who LOVE words and the English language. DS13 has always been a major reader and just loves to learn and use new words. It's as if the Unfortunate Events books were written just for him.

I love that series! It's the perfect thing to read when I don't want anything too heavy, just fun and enjoyable. Lemony Snicket has amazing talent.

We started these books two years ago when my kids were 6 & 8. We love them -- I mean, even my DH really enjoys them. We are definately looking forward to this movie!

All of DD's friends were reading these books starting in the 4th grade(she's in 6th now) so she read the first one and that was it. She just doesn't care for them.

DS8's 3rd grade teacher is reading the 1st one to the class. Most of the kids are addicted. DS has no interest or desire to read them.

Both kids are really great readers, several grade levels ahead in their reading. I guess you just have to like that style of writing and mine don't seem to.

My DD 10 has read 10 of them and is now reading the 11th and she absolutely loves them. We are anxiously awaiting the movie as well. ::yes::

That is so true! Lemony Snicket (a.k.a. Daniel Handler) likes to use very sophisticated language and then explain what the words mean. It's a little vocabulary lesson wrapped up in a fun book. How can you go wrong?

DD11 loves these books. DD10 doesn't. I love them and can't wait to see the movie.

If you read the 1st book before the movie I think you'll get enough information. That's the one that explains the family's situation and introduces you to Count Olaf.
