My 7 and 4 year old have become LEGO fanatics over the last year or so. I was wondering if it would be worth it to make sure we stopped at the LEGO store while we are at Disneyland in September. We have a LEGO store in one of the big malls about 45 minutes away. It's not huge, but has quite a decent selection. Is the store in DTD more unique or is it similar to other regular stores?

Thanks!

Probably only for the displays. Who doesn't love a 12' tall Darth Vader? :confused3
(this was in 05 btw) :rolleyes1
Of course the 'snoozing' old man on the bench out front.

I would say it would definately be worth your while visiting the LEGO shop in DTD. My kiddies 3 & 6 were in the shop for close to an hour before i had to drag them out, the loved it. :lovestruc
Although were from Australia & i have never seen anything like this LEGO shop over here in OZ, so this was something new for us.
But what Kid doesnt like LEGO??? :dance3:

In December 2009, I believe it was, they had build your own minifigs, which our local store doesn't have. I don't know about yours. The price isn't great (I believe 3 for $10) but was very fun...especially since they were pirates at the time and I like pirates. pirate:

They sometimes have some things on sale, and I have heard the prices are comparable to store prices.

My boys love the DtD Lego store. We went there before they ever added the one to the mall that's 25 minutes from our house. When we visited the one in the mall finally, everyone was so disappointed since it was so much smaller and less interesting than the DtD one. We barely bother to look at the one at the mall, but we always stop at the one in DtD when we go to Disney. There are usually some really cool life-size displays, and it's fun to get pictures of the kids with them. Good selection of Lego products but prices the same as anywhere else, although sometimes you can get lucky and find something good in the small clearance section. Our local store doesn't seem to have a clearance section. Definitely worth a look, especially if you're in DtD for any other reason anyway.

Completely agree. A lego store recently opened 10 minutes from us, but we'll always go back to the DtD one. If you have an AP you may be able to get 10% off, although I can't remember if it's just for Premium AP or all APs.

Have fun!

I think the 10% is for all levels of AP. I know we have taken advantage of it with both a deluxe and a premium. The 10% is good on regularly priced merchandise.

The DTD Lego store is definitely bigger with a large selection than a normal Lego Store. And the Vader rocks. But did you know that any LEGO store will give you free shipping on any online instock item they do not have in the store?

As far as the AP discount goes, yeah they give it to you, but when LEGO used the punchcard loyalty reward system, they would not give you the rewards and the discount, you had to pick one or the other so that definitely lessened the value of the discount since the reward program gave you back I think $30 for every $400 you spent (so like 7.5%). I haven't been back since they switched to the VIP card reward system so Im not sure if they will let you do both or still limit it to one.

Not sure how long you are at DL for, but have you been to Legoland? Its a little over an hour south and its awesome for young kids especially if they love Legos. My DS8 loves it as much as any Disney Park. They also have the biggest pick a brick selection I have ever seen.

the lego store is sooooo cool! i just walked by the other day and i swear i think i saw a lego'd character from toy story.. its was cool and taller then me!

I love going to the DTD Lego store and it is way better than the Lego store in Sacramento at Arden Fair Mall. The Arden Fair Mall doesn't have the life size Legos, it is way smaller and doesn't have much of a selection than the DTD store.

Yea, the DTD store has a Woody Lego character in the store.

It would be totally worth. It's one of the must stops for DS7 & DS4.

They are going to love it!!

yes that was it the woody!!!!

I haven't been to the one in DLR, but in WDW, It was giant and had lots of sets that are hide to find. Granted lots of those are $100 plus sets. If you wanted a full model line they had those too if you wanted all the city sets for example. The only thing I really like was the bins you could put pieces in. they didn't have a huge variety or uncommomon peices just a bunch of colors of regular peices.

My 3 boys are Lego fanatics. They had never been to a Lego store before visiting the one in DTD. Here's something we all thought was really cool. Choose a Lego set from a specified list, hold the box up to a scanner, and then a 3-D image is displayed on top of the box of what the set looks like after it is built. Not sure I explained it very well, maybe the picture will help.

There are also sound effects. If it is a helicopter or airplane, the propellers spin and you can hear the sound. If it's an ambulance, you hear sirens. If it's a police set, you will see little Lego robbers running around the top of the box. Anyway, it's pretty cool. :) And I second the suggestion of a trip to Legoland for young Lego fans. My boys LOVED it there.

Wow, thanks for the incredible replies! I think it's pretty much settled, we have to go the the DTD LEGO store and I had better plan bare minimum an hour just to wander and look at everything! My kids will be thrilled.

I really wish we had more time in California so we could do Legoland. I know my kids have talked about wanting to go and they are the perfect ages. Unfortunately for this trip we are only there for 4 days and we won't have a car. I guess that just gives us an excuse to try and plan a longer trip in the very near future.

Thanks again for the helpful replies, although I can already see our vacation budget being drained just at the LEGO store! Hmm, maybe I should bring an extra suitcase.;)

Lego sets take up so much room in luggage. But if you don't mind opening them you can flatten the boxes and pack the legos in ziplock bags. It saves a ton of room.

I like the wdw Lego store more than the DL Lego store. The lego building area they have outside is great, especially building and racing the cars. And the huge Lego dragon in the water is so cool. The only downside is that its always so crowded. The DL one has more space between all the displays and less people usually.

uh well yeah its a bigger store.. duh! :rotfl:

Actually Im pretty sure the wdw store is smaller than the DL store. That's part of the reason its so crowded in there all the time. The lego building area is outside and the Dragon is in the DTD lagoon.

I agree with the pp, the Lego store at WDW seems smaller than at DL. But it does seem bigger when you are outside and see all the different Lego figures. The WDW has an outside area right by the store for kids to play with the Legos and the DL has a small area inside for kids to play.
