How do you all feel about the on-going habit of people leaving leftover food all over the place when they check out? It's about as unattractive as piles of dirty linen on the floor when you're checking in to your villa! "Welcome Home" to other's food

Do mean they leave their food in the hallway?

They do! Mostly unopened, but I've actually seen people post pics on facebook of opened cases of beer....right in the hallway with directions on what room to stop by and grab it! Oh but I'm sure no kids would EVER grab one of them!

Its a common thing and a way thats says "hey this is free to anyone" mostly I see cases of water. Maybe they need a trash section for guests to be able to leave goods like this? could solve the issue.

I'm sure that stuff gets cleared pretty often. I wouldn't mind as long as it isn't still next to the door hours and hours later.

I am familiar with a Facebook page called “DVC Freecycle“. Guest checking out with leftover items that could possibly be used by another will post a picture and directions on how to retrieve the items. most items are groceries, but I’ve even seen strollers, disinfectant wipes and Disney balloons listed. Some Posters do state the items are in the hallway outside their door, or asked to be sent a personal message if interested , or leave items in the laundry room.
In all my trips I’ve never seen anything in the hallway.
Doesn’t bother me.

I think the intention is wonderful in that people share what won't be used rather than waste it. Personally, I don't know how comfortable I am ( in the world such as it is) accepting that excess for me or my family. I don't like feeling that way, but ... But that's just me. No judgment for others.

You are talking about the pay it forward groups. They are great but I think that things should be left in someplace like the laundry room and not right outside your door. At Aulani, everyone leaves their stuff in the ice room and that works great. I am not concerned about the alcohol being left. That is actually a bit of a hot topic with one side clutching their pearls saying "think of the children" and the other side saying "you should be responsible for your kids". Personally, I am in the other people are not responsible for your kids category. Kids that are too young to know better should not be out of their parent's sight, and if your teen is one of those that would just pick up some random alcohol and drink it, then they probably should not be out of your sight either. And if Disney becomes the place where you realize your kid is one of those, well then better there, where they won't be driving, then at some friend's house an doing something stupid.
People have been doing this for years and it has never been an issue. There are not a bunch of drunk kids at WDW that found left over alcohol. This is what we call making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Yeah, this is a weird invented scenario that has likely never happened at all.

I think it's fine as long as it's not somewhere invasive, like sitting in the hallway. We've left some water/gatorade in the laundry room before.

I do have one gripe - I've seen people leave partially used items before that I find absolutely disgusting, like partially used sunscreen. If it's been opened it should be in the garbage.

We actually throw out most of our leftovers (I'd feel awful leaving my stuff for others to clean up) but take some to our check out day by the pool and literally offer it to people sitting next to us at the pool. Anything left, we toss.

Agreed, sounds more like some 'urban legend' that gets passed around on the internet.........LOL !!!

If you have excess amount of leftover/unopened (non-alcoholic) beverages I would be more inclined to put them in those rooms with the ice machines or vending machines. I wouldn't leave it on the floor outside the room since it looks more like trash and who goes around taking stuff from there? Anything open that is leftover when we are departing goes in the trash.

I'm sure you're right about "there are not a bunch of drunk kids at WDW", but still don't appreciate checking into my villa with piles of groceries on the floor next door.

And I absolutely agree with that, as I said. The stuff should not be left in the hallway. But I have no issue with alcohol being left among the items. Just go put it in the laundry room or the vending room.

I don't know about AT Disney World, but it has happened in the past with the "Fish Extenders" on the cruiseline. Before the crackdown on bringing alcohol on board, some people would give mini-bottles of various alcohols or wines, and yes, kids (mostly tweens and teens) DID get into it. In at least one case, the kid who instigated the "search and recover" had parents doing the exchange and saw that they had gotten it, so the kids went roaming and checking all the extenders. That wasn't the whole reason that the alcohol policy was changed (largely it was because the cruise line was losing that money and people were NOT sticking to the rules of "for consumption in your room") but complaints from parents about drunk tweens and teens did enter into the decision.

One other thought about the leaving alcohol out - even if in a laundry room...

It's not just about kids/tweens/teens finding it. You never know who may be newly (or not newly) sober for whom stumbling across it in an ice machine room or the laundry would send them off the wagon. I'm talking adults here. Are you going to say "then they shouldn't be wandering around out of sight" also? They are adults and entitled to walk around on their own - to go and get ice or go and do the laundry. They shouldn't have to live in fear of finding someone else's leftover booze.

IMHO it would be better to order LESS than you think you'll need and then you can just supplement after the fact.

Edit to add: Yes, I do have a few very good friends in recovery (from life before I knew them in all but one case) who would *probably* not be triggered now, but early on in their recovery, finding random alcohol left in a "free to good home" pile would have totally undone their recovery to that point. And no, you'd never know they are in recovery to look at them.
