Leaving for WDW in one week and ds is in the ER!UPDATE on cast situation

UGH! His arm may be fractured. Is there such a thing as a waterproof cast???? My dh has him there now and I'm home with the younger two. He fell on the sidewalk and his arm is swollen just above his wrist. We are leaving Sunday and were planning on spending a lot of time in the water at Blizzard Beach and the resort, so I'm wondering about the cast situation, if he needs one... or will we be sitting on the sidelines?

UPDATE: He ended up having to get a full arm cast, so no Blizzard Beach for us , but I did manage to get him a waterproof cast so he can at least go in the pool and shower on his own. He got lime green in honor of the boards!

YIKES! I hope his pain is controlled. I don't know if there is a waterproof cast but I sure hope this little "incident" won't interfere with his trip to WDW.

A couple of years ago a friend of yours broke her arm. She had a plactic thing that was made to go over her cast to keep it dry when she went swimming. It was hard to get it on, but it did work very well. I'm not sure were she got it, but maybe your doctor would know where to get one.

I'm sure your doctor will do all he can to help your son have a good time. I can't promise you he will be able to swim, but if there is some kind of device to keep it dry I bet they'll get it for him. Good luck!

The docs in the Peds ER I worked at used to write prescriptions for these things..

Well, at least it looks like those waterproof covers DO exist.. Hopefully you can get it right from the hospital though - or someplace locally..

Poor kid. My little one went through that. I can assure you, wdw with a cast is much better than home with one.

Poor little peanut.

Ask the Ped for extra pain meds before you go. Or even a narcotic if they only prescribe Ibuprofen. A day at Disney will put much more strain on that arm than a day at home, and nighttime may be tough...

Have a great trip, bummer about the arm, but he doesn't have to carry around a pad, the characters can sign the cast!!!

thanks, guys. I'm just really worried about the water. That is the part that he looks forward to the most. If he can't go swimming, we might as well not go. I know things could be a lot worse, but between this, and my dh's uncle getting ready to die any minute, and all the last minute appointments before the trip, and the last two days of school, etc., .... well, you know how it is.

This happened to my daughter last year!
We got a product at out local medical supply company and it worked great.
I just got the box out of the linen closet to copy everything down.
It is called:

we bought # 20201 (pediatric Medium arm. She was a good sized 8 yr. old at the time and there was plenty of growing room in it. it went above her elbow.

to describe it:
It is light a big thick vinyl mitten with a hard plastic entry hole up at the upper end. Inside this hole is a ring of very firm stretchy rubber. Water cannot get in it. Believe me. It is tight when on. The person at the med. sup. place told me to only leave it on for up to 1/2 an hour at a time.

It is very durable. We used ours for every bath and some swimming too and it doesn't look as if it has even been used. It says on the box that it is non- latex.
I kept it in case anyone else in the family breaks their arm, or if one of the kids friends do and need it for this summer at the neighborhood pool.
I even kept the reciept. It was only 21.95. not too bad I think.

I met a lady at the store the other day who told me that her grandson is in a cast and his mom uses that new "press and seal "plastic wrap to protect his from getting just a little bit wet. This might be a good tip for the wet rides! She just wraps it all around and presses it in place. A roll of that sure wouldn't take up a lot of space in your suitcase!

In any case I hope he is feeling better soon, the first 4 or 5 days is when the pain is the worst and then it doesn't hurt anymore and relax, you are still going to have a great time!
Once you get there, you'll be amazed at how many kids you'll see in casts!!! Take lots of sharpies, Have the characters sign it!!!

I wonder if he would even be allowed to go down a water slide with a broken arm. Might want to check with Disney. I'm sure you will have fun in the Parks though. Good luck. I keep my kids in a bubble and shrink wrapped a few weeks before our trips. No roller skating or trampoline jumping is allowed!

A friend of mine got a water proof cast 2 yrs ago. She swam all summer.

I dont know exactly what it was , but it looked just like a normal cast, but it was really foamy inside. and it would float in the water.

She got it at the doctor, you should ask.

He wasn't even doing anything like that, just running down the sidewalk. Doesn't it figure?! He's okay, though. He is holding up well. It isn't a severe break (not all the way through).

One of the girls in my Girl Scout troop broke her arm right before we had a pool party and she got a waterproof cast. Swam in it all night with no problems.

Sorry to hear it is broken. Let us know if you find a good waterproof cast! I'm sure he'll have a ball, esp. on the wonder, even with a cast. Robin M.
