I think I am going to take the plunge and buy DS a Leapster for Christmas. He loves his My 1st LeapPad so much but it has a short and I think the Leapster will be better than another LeapPad that he will shortly outgrow. Anyway, the descriptions of the various games I have found do not tell me a whole lot. It sounds like every cartridge has 4 different games or so. If anyone has any Leapster games could you please describe what the different games are on the cartridges. The games are $25/piece so I want to make sure I get 1-2 that he will REALLY like. :)

I almost forgot to mention that DS is 3 (will be 4 next May).

Are those Leappad or Leapster games? I have never seen those games for the Leapster.

Leappad. I have never tried the Leapster before, so I am not sure how they would compare.

We just bought DS his Leapster about 2-3 months ago. The Leapster comes pre-loaded with 5-6 different games. Some cartridges are just games, some are interactive books with a couple of games, some are interactive videos with a couple of games.

DS has the Kindergarten, Dora, Nemo, Letter Factory, and Talking Words cartridges. Of the five, I would most recommend the Kindergarten cartridge, which is excellent (difference between letters and numbers, identifying words that start/end with certain letters, etc.) and the Letter Factory, which is an interactive video that teaches phonics.

I also recommend the Leapster case ($16 at Walmart/Target) and either the Leapster charger or spare rechargeable batteries (the Leapster takes 4 AA batteries, which run out in a few days when DS is playing often, so we have 8 rechargeable batteries so we always have some charged).

We have been very happy with the Leapster -- if it died tomorrow, we'd have gotten our money's worth out of it!

I believe those games are for the LeapPad. My DD4 has a Leapster and loves it. She has the Princess game (probably not for your DS), the Kindergarten game, which she really loves, and a couple others that I can't remember. The good thing about these games is that the age recommendations are clearly marked on the packages, so you can decide what is best for your son. I believe there is a PreK game that would probably be appropriate, and there is probably some character tie-in for boys that he would enjoy. I really can't recommend this product enough. DD is now spelling and reading at 4 because of Leapster and the other LeapFrog products, while DS6 probably knows more geography than I do because of an interactive LeapFrog globe he received. Sorry I can't be more explicit about the games, but I do know that DD plays with all the games she has received for her Leapster that are within her age range or a little above. She does have one game that is recommended for first grade, and she can't do that one yet.

My son LOVES the dora and spongebob games....but he really does play with all of them. I just bought the new system and some more games for christmas. We have quite a few games but he told me to tell you (he's 4 by the way) those two are his favorites!

Oh....Leapster........we loved it so.............until DS took it in the bathtub when I wasn't looking and WRECKED IT! I could've throttled him!

But I digress- he really liked the Nemo and Dora games.

Sniff....a tough lesson learned in this household.

I bought my grandson Leapster last year for xmas. He loves the spongebob game(it teaches quite a bit about letters and numbers. He also like the kindergarten one. He is 4 by the way. :flower:

Can't help too much as my Leapster is used in my classroom wtih 8 - 9 year olds, but I can tell you taht they love it, so it'll be a good investment! The games go on sale every once in awhile, so be onthe look out on Amazon and Wal Mart/Target.

It does eat batteries and at 3 he may get frustrated with the stylus/pen. But if he's navigated LeapPad, he should be fine. The pictures are good.

DS6 plays with my class Leapster over the summer and on weekends and loved the Letter Factory. That was his first one.

We got the leapster at Target after Christmas for 25 bucks and it came with the case. The boys love it. Also we got games on sale at Toys R Us. Sometimes they will be b1g1 or b2g1. We use a plug in for the leapster. Works well at home and if were somewhere where their isn't a plugin just use batteries.
