Anyone else have a child with a learning disability in math?
Touchpoint math was helping but as he gets older and the math gets harder hes really struggling.
(DS is 7, going into second grade and "understands" numbers only really until 20 then after that it takes ALOT of effort of explaining, etc to get him to get the right answer).

No, but I do. It's an ongoing thing (thankfully, there are calculators!). Is he receiving extra support at school? Resource room?

My daughter is going into 5th grade and we believe she is LD in math. She reads at probably a 9th or 10 grade level but cannot do math to save her life. We are in NC and she had to take the End of Grade Math test 3 times and finally passed on the 3rd time. It is very frustrating for her since she is so intelligent and excels with reading and writing. I am walking in the first day of school with my letter to get her tested.

She also has absence seizures which doesn't help.

My first question would be have you asked to have him tested for a learning disability? Kids who are good in one area but not in another often have an LD.

Don't know yet about my kids, but I have an LD in MATH! Don't know what I'm going to do when my kids get to that point. I did really great in History and english, but math FORGET IT! Thank goodness my Sis in Law is a math teacher. Guess who my kids are going too.:rotfl: I also have ADHD, I'm hoping my kiddos don't have anything. If so, I know how to deal with it.

my son has adhd and has been getting spec. ed services thru our district since he was 3. still gets help in his regular class and gets pulled most days into the other room.

we try alot of hands on stuff but was just looking to see if there was anything out there that maybe we could do at home.

we do love his sped teacher (shes coming to tutor twice a week this summer at home) but just look for other ideas too.

(he needed help with reading but has now caught up and is reading a bit above. hes pretty average in all other areas too. mostly math seems to really get him confused.)

My DD going into 3rd grade has been struggling with Math.... it's a nightmare trying to help her with Math homework!!!! She is a bookworm-reading well beyond her grade level, but Math? Oh gosh-she has a meltdown when she has Math homework. I paid her teacher to tutor her additionally last year during 2nd grade and it helped a little at the time. Now that the summer is almost over and I promised myself I would work with her all summer (but never really got to it with so much fun stuff happening :confused3 ) she'll go back in 2 weeks to school and I hope that this year is not another horrible year!!!

At her 1st grade teacher's suggestion, we had her tested for an IEP at the end of 1st grade. Unfortunately the tests are designed so that it doesn't necessarily match what is being taught currently with the spiral Math curriculum in MA. She passed the IEP test, so did not qualify for services :( Her 2nd grade teacher wanted us to retest her again but the resource teacher that I spoke with said to wait until the start of 3rd grade because if we'd tested her at the end of 2nd grade, she only would have had to score at a level of 1st grade/9 months to not qualify.... I knew she'd do at least that-it's the more current stuff she gets overwhelmed with :( :( :(

In MA, we also have the MCAS standardized testing that stresses the students and teachers out to the max. 3rd grade is when they do the math portion:scared1: :scared: I am dreading May......

I'm interested in following this post to see what anyone else is doing to help their kids~ Good luck to all!!!! :grouphug:
