My DD going into 3rd grade has been struggling with Math.... it's a nightmare trying to help her with Math homework!!!! She is a bookworm-reading well beyond her grade level, but Math? Oh gosh-she has a meltdown when she has Math homework. I paid her teacher to tutor her additionally last year during 2nd grade and it helped a little at the time. Now that the summer is almost over and I promised myself I would work with her all summer (but never really got to it with so much fun stuff happening

) she'll go back in 2 weeks to school and I hope that this year is not another horrible year!!!
At her 1st grade teacher's suggestion, we had her tested for an IEP at the end of 1st grade. Unfortunately the tests are designed so that it doesn't necessarily match what is being taught currently with the spiral Math curriculum in MA. She passed the IEP test, so did not qualify for services

Her 2nd grade teacher wanted us to retest her again but the resource teacher that I spoke with said to wait until the start of 3rd grade because if we'd tested her at the end of 2nd grade, she only would have had to score at a level of 1st grade/9 months to not qualify.... I knew she'd do at least that-it's the more current stuff she gets overwhelmed with
In MA, we also have the MCAS standardized testing that stresses the students and teachers out to the max. 3rd grade is when they do the math portion

I am dreading May......
I'm interested in following this post to see what anyone else is doing to help their kids~ Good luck to all!!!!
