We have been talking about this trip ever since our first visit to Florida in 2002. We both wanted to see the original Disney park and had planned on making the trip in 2004 - until I chickened out of the longer flight, that is. The topic had come up again in the past few months, and in a moment of post-Christmas depression madness, we booked the flights. One of the reasons that I was dubious about the trip is because we have to fly from London instead of Manchester, making the trip to the airport rather longer than usual. We are flying from London Heathrow to LA on Friday 21 March, arriving at approximately 15.45.

After further discussion we decided to drive down to London on Thursday 20 and stay over night at the Holiday Inn. This removes two stresses for me - the stress of having to do another flight and the stress of getting to the airport on time. Train prices were crazy so we settled on driving down and being able to set off whenever it suits us.

So, on to the trip. We are spending the first two nights in the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego. We decided to drive straight to San Diego from the airport rather than making trips back and forth from LA. We are planning on visiting the San Diego Zoo on Saturday 22 and Seaworld on Sunday 23, before making the drive back to LA.

The hotel I picked in LA is called the Magic Castle. I was impressed by the reports on trip advisor, the price and most importantly, the free mini bar! We have four nights at this hotel and we plan on visiting Universal Studios as well as cramming in as much tourist stuff (and shopping!) as possible!

We will then be driving to Las Vegas on Thursday 27 March to spend four nights in the Luxor hotel. I have wanted to stay at this hotel ever since the first time I saw it, so this part of the planning was a no-brainer. We have a list of hotels we want to visit and activities at each, plus endless internet printouts though no plan. We have decided to just go with the flow and fit in what we can. We also hope to take a day out to drive to the Grand Canyon - Andy fancies a walk on the glass suspension bridge, I fancy to sit in the car and wave at him!

We drive back to Anaheim on 31 March and spend the final five nights of our trip at the Disneyland Hotel. I am so excited to be staying there and to be experiencing the original Disney park. We don't really have an accurate idea of how long we will want/need to spend in the parks and it depends on the crowds too, so we have chosen not to book any ADRs. Most of the time we are both happy with CS restaurants, anyway. We have, however, booked the Fantasmic dessert buffet with VIP seating for our last night. We plan on staying out as late as possible and tiring ourselves out for the flight home on 5 April.

Not long to go now!

Yay, a west coast trip report  Dad and I have booked five nights at the Grand Californian in August and I love Las Vegas so I'll be looking forward to this one.

Have a great time Laur's. :goodvibes

Laura and Andy,
I'm excited for you. You're certainly going to be covering a lot of territory during your visit this time. I love WDW, but I also love Disneyland and LA. What fun you're going to have! Though time is short and I'm sure you have a list of things that must be done before you take off, may I suggest taking a few minutes to read a trip report (if you haven't read it already). It's Kevin Stringer's 2005 report (that can be found in the DIS archives, but more easily found on his home page http://kevinstringer.co.uk/index.htm --CA from north to south, with the portion covering Hollywood, Universal Studios, the Disney Studio, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and finally Anaheim, starting on Day 13 (I had joined the Stringers a few days earlier in Solvang/Santa Barbara wine country). You probably know how entertaining Kevin's writing is. It's full of useful ideas for what can be seen in a relatively short period of time. I think his 2005 report would be especially helpful to WDW fans who are visiting Disneyland for the first time as he was on that trip. You'll see us on the balcony at the Fantasmic Dessert buffet (Day 16). Glad you decided to do that as, though I prefer (by far) the Disneyland Fantasmic both staging and content, I'll be the first to admit that the actual viewing in Disneyland is problematic as there's no seating provided for the audience--as there isn't for viewing fireworks at any of the parks. Part of the show to me is the conversion of the Rivers of America and New Orleans Square from their roles during the day to the staging area for Fantasmic at night. Watch for that. Through the years my husband and I found several wonderful spots to stand and view Fantasmic, but would have to donate as much as two hours to hold our good place on extra crowded days. With a limited number of times for you to view the show on this trip and perhaps it being awhile before you return to CA, I think you were very smart to hedge your bet by guaranteeing great and comfortable viewing (with desserts!!!). Have safe travels and a fabulous trip. Ride Indiana Jones for me, please.

Oh forgot to add. Was not sure if you are a fan of Star Trek but we loved the Start Trek experience which I believe is even better now.

Sounds like you are going to have a fantastic time, take lots of photos to post on your trippie. Looking at photos is the next best thing to being there, we have never been but would love to go to Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Thanks to SusanEllen for the link to Kevin Stringers trip reports, there's plenty of reading for me to do there.
