Laurie & George can use more good thoughts (another UPDATE - 2/4 pg 2)

Well I am going to share with you the whole story, it is gonna be kinda long.

This poor high school football player was run over twice by some stupid 16 year old girl on purpose!!! I guess a bunch of kids were hanging out a park (only a few were drinking, George was not) and this girl got mad at someone so she got in her car and headed towards the crowd. She ran over a girl - over her pelvis region and then backed up - over her shoulders. Well when she backed up George went to help the girl and this idiot ran over him twice and pinned his legs between her car and another car.

George has had 2 operations, his one knee cap is blown - he has lots of pins and such in his one leg. He lost alot of "meat" on that leg, there was a time when from the knee down there was no pulse and that part of his leg was black - so they did surgery. From what I hear that one leg is pretty mangled and the other is not that great either. This poor kid is only 17 and he was there just hanging out with friends. His 16 year old brother witnessed the whole thing. the doctors day he will require at least 2 more surgeries, probably more. They dont know how long he will be in the hospital either.

So in all this girl hit 12 people, 2 very seriously. Luckily she was arrested and she is charged with many things along with 2 counts of attempted muder, she is only 16!!!!

This is the latest:

I was able to talk to Laurie Thursday night at work. Well she is a mess, she can not even talk, all she can do is cry. She spends the days with her son who is in immense pain and when she leaves the hospital she sits in the parking lot and bawls her eyes out. She does not want to cry in front of George and her other 3 kids at home.

George is on alot of pain meds and he has some kind of patch on his back but it does not help much at all. This is what Lauire told me, warning can be kinda gross. His right knee is shattered, she said if you look at the leg from the back it looks like someone took an ice cream scrapper and scrapped everything out near his knee. That leg was so swollen that they had to cut his leg open on the side to relieve some pressure. From what the doctors say that is the easiest thing to heal of his injuries. Within 36 hours of the accident he had 2 surgeries. They have to change the bandages every 4 hours so what little skin/meat he has sticks to it so that causes him extreme pain when they change it. So they have scheduled surgery for him on Monday. They are going to take a few layers of skin off of his other leg in hopes of covering up the damage to the other leg. Of course this will be double pain for the poor kid. He was taking out of ICU but he is still a step up over a normal room - just not ICU. His injuries are bad enough to keep him at a trauma hospital instead of being at the Childrens hospital which is right next door.

As far as the stupid girl that ran him over, her arraignment was last Wed and they are trying to get her charged as an adult. She can get a possible 25 to life for both counts of attempted murder. I personally hope to hell that she is charged as an adult. I also think she needs a good butt kicking, maybe someone in jail can teach her a lesson.

I am taking up a collection at work for a gift package or whatever for George. I wanted to get him something that he can pass time with in the hospital. Any suggestions on what to put in there besides magazines? She does not know how long he will be in there.

She has not been back to work since the accident. I personally dont know how she could come back knowing her baby is in such pain a mile or two away but she needs the money! She says that she can not sleep either, she just tosses and turns. So I dont know how she functions. I wish I could do more for her.

Omg that is terrible prayers for George and his family. How is the girl that was also ran over? She deserves to be charged as a adult.

Christine, that is absolutely terrible!!!! That girl who did that needs some serious help!!!! Whatever the outcome of the trial, she really needs someone to get her right in the head!!! That poor other girl too!! I hope she will be okay! My prayers are with that other girl, George, his mom and all their love ones. I hope his surgery goes well!

Thanks for the update, Christine. I'm still sauing prayers for that family. I can't begin to imagine their agony. And the other girl, too? I hope she's healing well.

As for the culprit, she deserves major consequences. Getting a driver's license is a big responsibility and she abused it in the worst way.

What a senseless tragedy Prayers for George, the young woman who was also hit and their families.

As far as the care package, recorded books might be a good thing to help keep his mind occupied. There are lots of books available, that's what mother is doing to keep her mind off the cancer, listening to recorded books. A small cassette/cd player with earphones would help insure other patients aren't disturbed while he listens to books.

If you decide to do this, let me know. I have at least one recorded book I could send you.

The other girl is okay. She was released from the hospital a couple days after the accident. Laurie came to work tonight, I gave her the other thread that I printed out and it made her smile. You guys are great.

What a senseless tragedy! I can't imagine anything being so horrible that it would cause you to deliberately run over a group of people. George and his mother are both in my prayers.

I think nativetxn has a great idea with the books on tape. Hopefully that would help keep his mind of all the pain he is in.

so sorry that your friends are having to endure this. I have taken care of several patients with fasciotomies (the cuts in his leg) and they are very painful.

Ideas-tapes or CDs of his favorite music or relaxing music, a videotape of all his friends with each having an opportunity to send a message to him, some of his favorite snacks (if allowed), a certificate for a massage for his Mom (many would come right to the hospital if you explain the situation), but more importantly, just be there for this family. They have a long row to hoe, and it will be difficult. They will need their friends.

As for ideas, does he have some kinda hand-held game at home they could bring him? i.e. Gameboy? There's also a ton of different, inexpensive solo games in hand-held form, yahtzee, monopoly, solataire, hearts, etc..... also, just a thought that I'm sure he'd disapprove of but, what about homework????

Here is another update. (oh and I found out I was spelling his name wrong, it is jorge. LOL, oooops!! )

Anyways...... Laurie finally came back to work the other night. She says that Jorge is doing okay. He has a morphine drip and a morphine patch on his back to control the pain. They also give him a shot of something to ease it more - makes him see floating fluffy white toilets. (yep that is what he says he sees. ) She also said that he daved 4 peoples lives that night. When he went to help the girl that was run over first and the idiot started his way he pushed 4 people out of the way - one being his girlfriend. He was pinned between this girls car and an the ball to tow a tralier on an Isuzu Rodeo. That is why so much damage was done to his one leg. The tow ball took alot of meat out of his leg. (sorry if this is gross)

Well he had skin graph surgery yesterday (Monday). They took a few layers of skin from his left leg to cover up all of the deep and exposed wounds on the other leg. He was in horrible pain afterwards but was doing better today, well as best as can be expected. Laurie brought pictures in to work tonight (she has to take a lot of them from every angle for the lawyer) and let me tell you, I could not look at alot of them. He has several rods sticking out of leg. That poor boy, I can only imagine the pain that he is in! To top it off, his 19th birthday is just days away.

His spirits are okay, it goes back and forth. He is aching to get out the bed. He can feel a little pressure in his foot so that is a little bit of a good sign. He is hanging in there.

Would anyone be interested in sending him a card or something to cheer him up? I can have them sent to Laurie to our job. Just an idea if anyone is interested, it may brighten his spirits a little.
