Hello, I am doing a delivery order from Garden Grocer for our upcoming trip. My son has excema quite badly I was wondering what is the best laundry detergent I should buy for while we are visiting as being from the UK I am not familiar with any of the brands.

thanks in advance

Kirsten

We used Deft for our son when he had excema. It was recommended by our Dr and it seemed to help. I should also say that he had it so bad that our Dr. even said that he had never seen a 3 month old with it so bad.

Dreft is a good brand to use because it is a baby detergent, so it's free of a lot of additives that could irritate eczema, but it still has a fragrance. It can be pricey, though, and any of the big box stores (like Walmart, Target, etc.) may carry a store brand that is comparable to Dreft. However, there are "free" detergents that have no dyes or perfumes you might try as well. Several different manufacturers make them so you should have a variety to choose from.

I have psoriasis and I use the All Free & Clear. Only thing I can use.

All three of my kids all have eczema and we use Cheer Free, All Free and Clear and recently tried Tide Free. We haven't had any problems at all from them. I also use Downy Free for fabric softener.

My son has it on his feet. We use those brands haven't had any luck. The doctors say it's a phase and he'll grow out of it and gave us a cream. I haven't heard of deft I'm going to try it.

Dreft is full of fragrance is was not good for my son's eczema.

If the All and Tide free and clear didn't work for you, then I would suggest you bring what you are now using from home. I wouldn't want to change detergent while on vacation and have to worry about a bigger break out of eczema.

I know that it will add more weight to your suitcase - but maybe bring enough to just wash your son's clothes so he is comfortable on the trip.

I have eczema and use Tide Free and Clear with the best success. I can also use All Free and Clear but, at times, I have had some flare ups even while using it. One thing I do (and it's SUPER CHEAP) is to put some white vinegar in a Downy ball as a fabric softner. It actually helps reduce soap residue left on my clothes after washing - big, huge help!

All free and clear has been the best for us. We cannot use any Tide products, even the free and clear.

We use the All Free and Clear laundry detergent and Bounce Free and Sensitive dryer sheets. We have very sensitive skin and bouts of eczema and these products don't aggravate our skin. We also use Lever 2000 Original bar soap for bathing. Have a great trip!

All Free and Clear works well, right now we're using the Tide version, and it's not as good. My eczema is starting to flair up, and that's the only thing I've changed.

I've had great luck with the Method brand of dye/perfume free, but it's more expensive.

I also do an extra rinse with every load. Will you have a washer in your unit? If so, after the cycle runs, reset it for an extra rinse. It really helps to get all the additives out.

Cerave cream (in the big tub, not a tube) worked wonders for my ds' eczema. Almost like magic, in only a few days. Up then I had tried everything else over the counter. Good luck!

We use Tide Free and Clear. Works great for DS who has eczema and DD who is allergic to something in the regular Tide detergent.

Wow. I've never known anyone whose eczema was a phase. In fact, the girl I babysit for has had it ever since I've known her...and I've known her for over 10 years. Sounds like you need to see a specialist if your still using the cream in 6 months.

I'd suggest bringing some of whatever you usually use. I get eczema, and can only use Purex.

My son's was a phase. He had it terribly as a young toddler (needed steroid creams, etc). He's 10 now and it hasn't been a problem for several years (knock wood). Mine, on the other hand, isn't a phase. We use All Free and Clear.

I have severe eczema that is not controlled by any lotions or creams. I am on methotrexate (an immunosuppresent) and my doctors are in the process of evaluating using IVIG infusions for me because it is so bad.

We only use Arm and Hammer sensitive skin. It has no perfumes and no dyes.
We have tried all the others mentioned here (plus more) and I breakout from all of them.

And yes, eczema can be a phase especially in young children. It is extremely common in babies and young children and most outgrow it. The numbers are something like 15% of children and 1-2% of adults have eczema.

DS had it much worse when he was very little. He used to wake in the night scratching and crying. He has a lot less eczema now (at almost 5) so I hope he outgrows it.
