latest thoughts on Ivan?

We are leaving Saturday morning and will be heading South on 95 from Virginia. I am 99% sure that we will hit some of the Ivan weather. We are pulling a 29' trailer so we will have to take it slow.

Yesterday they were saying that the winds would reach out as far out as 100 to 110 miles away from the eye. When it was scheduled to hit Pensacola, we were still in the wind area. We could still get some of it even hitting closer to Mobile.

Buzz1 - We live over near the base and I actually don't feel guilty about taking my DD out of school around Halloween for our trip. In fact she could be a candidate for Homecoming queen as she is the only senior girl in the Technology Academy. The Tech Academy only selects the seniors for Homecoming candidates. But the Homecoming parade and game are on the 28th of Oct. But she really isn't concerned. She is really not into the pagent type stuff. It would have been something very memorable, but we had our plans in place when we finally found out when homecoming was.

We are all ready for Ivan at work. We have the front door sandbagged and sealed with plastic. Our street gets flooded with just a regular heavy rain. I keep threatening to buy a "No Wake Zone" sign to post out front. Hopefully we won't have a strong storm surge. :worried: We also put sand bags outside of the back door.

Take care all in FL, AL, & LA. Everyone will be in our prayers.

I plan on leaving before day on Thursday. I will be coming down I-75 from middle GA. I think that I should be safe. I figured it would probably rain.

SRUAlmn--It looks like you will be fine during your travel period. The current thinking is that Ivan will be so far to your west that it should not affect you.

safetymom--I hope that for some reason you weren't suggesting that I had stated that Florida never had anything to worry about and that they shouldn't pay attention to Ivan. In fact if you were to bother to go back and read my first post on the first page, you would see that I closed with adding that hurricanes are very tricky to forecast and while I personally feel the hurricane would hit well to the west and keep Florida in the clear, all Floridians still needed to keep a close eye on Ivan.

Just a quick note. Ivan didn't hit us too hard, but the tornados from the back lash of Ivan did. One tornado within 1/2 mile of where we live. We had no property damage, except for a birdhouse my DH has been trying to get rid of for sometime and the squirrels won't let him, because they keep occupying it. The wind took care of it for us.

DH called me at work today to tell me that the squirrel was out surveying the damage to his house. He didn't know who the squirrel had for homeowners insurance but it better not be him. :rotfl:

All in all we didn't do too bad, but some areas here didn't do too good. 70 homes lost about 2 miles from us. 2 people dead due to the tornados. Some people still without power this evening.

But the people of Bay County are pulling together like they always do and its amazing what they can accomplish. We raised $50,000 plus food & supplies for Hurricane Charley relief in 3 days. Things will get back to normal within days at this rate.

Our prayers are with those that really felt the fury of Ivan. God Bless.
