Latest School Shooting

There are around 1300 gun related deaths of children in this country every year. What about them? You don’t hear about most of them, at least on a national level. Kids get shot walking down the street.

Sensible gun laws.

Sensible gun legislation I am all for, however, how does that stop the kids who take the weapons from family or buy them illegally... our government needs to stop throwing money to other countries and nonsense and start finding solutions to make our schools safe. This has gone on far too long and you'd think they would have learned after Columbine, Sandy Hook...especially after Parkland. All the work those students did after the tragedy they survived should not be in vain!

Yup, so much safer.

How about when we, as teachers, report a student who perhaps is a danger to themselves or others, somethings done about it. We have a student in our building who has threatened teachers and other students, but because of his disability we can do nothing about it. Sure we can - find an alternative setting for him.

How about we listen to the kids. Better yet, teach them that if they hear something, say something. Saying something to a teacher about a possible fight or dangerous situation isn't snitching. Unfortunately we have to change this mindset of parents, not just the kids.

Let's look at what other countries are doing, other than the lack of ability to get weapons. Smaller schools, more activities, more sense of belonging.

How about parent involvement. While kids are amazing at hiding things, parents do need to know what's going on in their kids' lives.

If your child is an issue, do something. Don't make excuses. Don't push blame away from where it really belongs. Teach your child to take responsibility.

Give the schools the resources they need.
We had an incident at our HS about a video posted based on a school shooting. Dd told me, we contacted the school (as did many other parents), kid has been expelled. Back in the day, most kids wouldn’t have reported it, no one likes to be a snitch, but they’ve been taught to say something.

I'm numb. The last time this happened, I was a mess. This time, I'm not sure I've even fully absorbed it yet. I cannot imagine those poor parents.

In the past 30 years, 150 kids and adults have died in school shootings. To put it in perspective, 1600 children die EVERY year in car accidents. Nope, not in favor of throwing millions of dollars at this, especially at the expense of education. Media induced fear makes folks think rare events are likely events.

But even if the fear is not statistically rational, it's still there. Kids (and their families) are under enormous stress from this. If we're going to legally require kids to attend school (and I'm not out to debate homeschooling here - it's a great option for some, but not a realistic option for most) then I think we have a moral obligation to help families feel safe there. Maybe it isn't metal detectors, maybe there's a much cheaper way, but I don't think we can just ignore the effect these shootings are having.

Interviews with mass killers show a desire to make a mark on the world, to be known for what they are going to do. The more these events are talked about and covered in the press and online the more copycats will be inspired. Take away that notoriety and you reduce that motive. Do not publicly name suspects. Minimal coverage. No news specials.

I agree. - I don't mean covering up the news story itself, but taking away the "fame" element would be good. (They've got the kid's picture on TV here, and I'm disgusted.)

I really think we need a multi-faceted approach. I love the idea of a better licensing procedure for guns (insurance, too) and I also think we need to work more on mental health. - There is something wrong with our society if so many people are "snapping".

I agree with @monsterkitty as well. Smaller schools...more sense of belonging...parent involvement. All those things would help, and definitely being able to remove kids who make threats!

Yes, kids will say something, but not always. There are many kids who are protected by disability laws so it's much harder to suspend let alone expel. Unfortunately these are the kids who will not be protected as soon as they reach 18. We're failing these kids by not getting them real help or by making them accountable.

The current laws considered in congress that can not get passed are a ban on bumpstocks and not allowing people on the no fly list to buy guns. You make the call!!

I have a childhood friend whose child goes to that school and was in the class where the shooting took place. She has not been able to reach her child yet and all of us are terrified.

I pray that the shootings will stop happening, but in the meantime I pray that only gun owners are shot in future attacks. People need to reap what they sow.

Oh no! She hasn't been able to reach her yet? It's been hours. My thoughts go out to your friend. Please keep us updated!

I'm sorry your friend is going through that, and I hope her child is safe but I can't believe that you would actually pray for people to get shot. There are millions of law abiding gun owners and wishing they get shot is despicable.

Wow. That's probably one of the meanest things I've ever read here in my 18 years on the DIS. :(

No one would argue against that fact.

There is a difference though in treating something like it's statistically high when in reality, while horrific when it happens, it is not at this present moment significantly high to counterbalance some of the overhauls people here and elsewhere have proposed.

22 school shootings in the USA since Jan 1st seems statistically significant to me.

Comments like that or what's wrong with our country right now. What a horrible thing to wish on a law-abiding citizen.

as a high schooler, i believe that the idea of instituting metal detectors and arming teachers are completely dumb (there i said it). i go to high school to learn; not to empty my pockets and walk through a metal detector and then enter a classroom where my teacher has possession of a gun.

seeing what happened to my friends at parkland, where they now have clear backpacks and a tsa-like security, they forget what school is supposed to be like. we shouldn't have to result to these approaches where we turn schools into prisons.
