Late Winter.. Early Spring Visit, when to go?

We are thinking about going for a quick weekend trip sometimes in early 2009. I would love to go in March or April, but we do want to avoid spring break/easter crowds, so we could go earlier in the year? Anyone already planned a trip like this? I would love any input or advice I can get.
