Last vero question.. Offsite things to do

What are some of your favorite offsite activities to enjoy while you are at Vero? I am interesting in things that my 11 and 15 yr old daughters will enjoy...but won't break the bank.

If you have a car and don't mind a little drive, Kennedy Space Center is always a nice trip. Most things there are free, and a couple have a small fee.

Spotting the manatees swimming in the warm waters near a local power station. Can't be more specific, since it's a few years since we did this, but it was nearby.

My DH would LOVE a trip to Kennedy. How long is the drive..we will have our car.

Okay, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I just went to the KSC web site to check out the latest prices. Apparently they have restructured their fees, and now charge one all inclusive fee of $35/adult (not sure about kids). This includes the Imax, and bus tour. Of course, viewing a launch is a whole new ticket.

When we visited a few years back, admission was free. Once you entered, you payed for things a-la-cart. The bus tour was only a few bucks, and a few more for the Imax. The walking tour was free.
The bus tour was outstanding, as they took us about 1/2 mile from the launch pad, and very close to the landing site.

Oh well, I guess everyone is out to make a buck these days!

Map Quest shows the drive at 1 hour 19 minutes.

I am sure my oldest (15) would have to pay the adult price and chances are the 11 yr old would too.

Oh well.... someday. I guess this just means we HAVE to go back to Vero now... right?

The Environmental Learning Center that is mentioned in the 2002-3 member guidebook is very near and very good if you would enjoy nature exhibits and walks. We went in March and there was a festival and there was an informative boat ride that you could buy tickets for. But I don't know if the boat ride was special because of the festival.

Harbor Branch oceanographic institute (there is a web site) is south on Rt. 1, about 10 miles, from VB. Since we toured it, we have seen documentaries on the Travel or Discovery channel about the work of the institute. There is a boat tour there as well and we saw manatees in their docking area.

We drove down to Jupiter and toured the lighthouse. That was fun. Also a few miles north of Jupiter, there is a nature reserve that is nice. One of the neatest things was that when the tide comes in, there are holes in the rocks along the coast and the water sprays up through the holes like geysers.

If you want to shop, there is an outlet mall and a mall by the interstate in Vero Beach.

If your daughters are baseball fans the VB Dodgers play minor league baseball in VB. Admission is usually around $6-$8 per person.

The Indian River Mall is about 15 minutes away from the VB resort. There is a Movie theater there,TGIF's a food court,etc. There is also a Bob Evans in front of the mall.

That movie theater just may get a visit from us. My oldest is a HUGE Harry Potter fan and is already "complaining" about not being home to see the latest movie when it is released. Maybe if we have a rainy afternoon or evening we will hop over there and surprise her.

I think DH would be more interested in the baseball. We could drop him off and head to the mall for some "girl time"
