Sunday's Attemptation
Bearers of the name Frederick - variants of Freda, Fritz and Fred - include Frederick Lanchester, the designer of the first British automobile (1896); Canadian physician and joint winner of the Nobel Prize in 1921 for extracting the insulin from the pancreas, Sir Frederick Banting; and British biochemist Sir Frederick Hopkins, co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1929 for discovering the nutrients now known as vitamins (originally called "vitamines").
From 1892, English schoolmaster Frederick Snaderson pioneered the use of workshops and technical studies for boys uninterested in the classics. Also concerned about the education of his nin children but who had bitter relationships with his parents was Frederick, Prince of Wales (son of George II and the father of mad George III). He never became king and was held in utter contempt by his frustrated mother Queen Caroline, who declared:
"My firstborn is the greatest ***, and the greatest liar, and the greatest canaille, and the greatest beast in the whole world, and I most heartily wish he was out of it".
