For several hours we had fantastic lightening. At one point, the weather people were reporting over 500 strikes an hour! :faint: That's a flash of lightning about once every 5-7 seconds. The storms were off to our south and east but we could hear the thunder. It ranged from fairly loud to a beastly sounding growl off in the distance.

Then this morning I got this.

Excessive heat watch in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Temperatures will soar well into the 90s Tuesday afternoon and will approach 100 degrees in some areas. The combination of heat and humidity will result in heat indices of up to 105 degrees Tuesday afternoon.
Wednesday will be the hottest day of the week, as high temperatures reach 100 degrees over most of the area. Heat indices are likely to reach around 110 degrees Wednesday afternoon.

In addition, overnight lows in the larger urban centers may not fall below 80 degrees Tuesday night and Wednesday night, presenting a continued danger for those without air conditioning or proper ventilation.

The upcoming hot weather will be an extreme event for the area, and has the potential to be a serious life threatening situation if precautions are not taken, especially for the elderly, children, and those who work outside.
People in the area should plan on altering their daily routine, in order to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion, or worse, being a casualty of life threatening heat stroke.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activity, especially from late morning through the evening, and spend time in air conditioning if possible.
Make sure rooms remain properly ventilated if air conditioning is not available, by opening windows and using fans. This is especially important for those in the urban centers.

No person or pet should ever stay in an enclosed vehicle even for the shortest amount of time. Temperatures quickly rise to life threatening levels, even if the windows are partially opened.

An excessive heat watch means that dangerously hot temperatures are expected with heat indices of 105 degrees or greater.

So, you say, well that's Florida in the summer... what do you expect. Nope! That AREA they're talking about is all of southern New England except Cape Cod, Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island.

Sounds like a good time to go hang out in the frozen food section of Stop & Shop. :scared:

Yep...I am from St. Louis Missouri and trying to explain to the nice folks here in Texas that it is HOTTER and MISERABLE in St. Louis during July and Aug than Texas boggles their mind.

Texas heat is a piece of cake....

:teeth: I think it depends on where you live in Texas. I've been in DFW area when the heat index has been 110 or so. It's been like that around here in Arkansas as well. :crazy2: :faint: :scared:

Minnesota is even hotter with heat indexes in the 115° range. Explain THAT to all you southerners!

You see...you nice folks from Texas don't get it. St. Louis is HOTTER THAN HADES...I am also here in DFW and this is a piece of cake folks.

Yup, that's what we are hearing in CT too . . .good thing for a/c and the pool! My dog is already feeling deprived because we haven't let her go out and hang with us by the pool the last few days and it was only in the low 90's then. :rolleyes1

:earseek: Holy cow! I didn't know it could get so hot up there. Think I'll stay in Atlanta, where it's a balmy 93.

I have lived here in Massachusetts my entire life and the "panic" about the temp hitting 100 confuses me a bit. We've had 100 degree days before. It's not really as unusual as they seem to be making it out to be.

Granted, it doesn't happy here as often as it does other places, but this isn't the first time and certainly not the last that we'll see 100.

Just what I was thinking. The heat index reached 102 a couple of weeks ago and no one was freaking out. It also didn't seem that bad. :confused3

We're suppose to hit 93 here, but I go to Tenn. in a few days and their temps., w/ "feels like" look like they will be horrible.

At least here you usually get the sea breeze.

Guess, I need to go mow what I can of the back yard, before the temp. goes higher.

Around here it isn't so much that it is going to be 115° it is that it isn't cooling off at night, LOWS in the 80's so those without air conditioning are in serious trouble. They are urging those without air conditioning to find arrangements until this passes. Look what is happening in California, all the heat related deaths. They are trying to prevent that with the warnings they post.

Yup, we've got similar warnings in southern NH for the next few days. That's right folks, NH's not the frozen tundra in the summer. We've had heat indicies in the 100's already this summer, and it didn't seem as bad as the panic they go into.
I told mom not to let the heat scare her away from Florida in the summer. We're dealing with it here too, and I'd rather be hot in Disney then here where a lot of places are still not equipped to deal with it (fans and window AC's can only do so much)
