Lasik surgery?

Has anyone had this?
DH is seriously considering this option and I want him to be informed.

Can anyone tell me their experiences with it?

I had it about 9 months ago. I only needed it done on one eye. It was painless. It took about 5 minutes. After the surgery, my eye was very sensitive to light for a few days. They have you go home and sleep for for about 6 hours with a little plastic thing over your eye to prevent you from accidently rubbing it.

I could see perfectly immediately following the surgery. I now have 20/15 eye sight. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I went up with an attitude that if I went to the consulatation and didn't feel comfortable doing it - I wouldn't -
there were tons of people in the waiting area who had it done the day prior, the week before, a month before and even a year before so in chatting with them all it really eased my mind -
and then they made us go in for counseling first too!

I had thin corneas too

the procedure itself kinda freaked me out -
it didn't hurt -
just being able to SEE what is going on (if someone had been with me they could have sat in the other room and watched the procedure through a monitor)
after it was pretty sore the first night -
I slept a lot.
then the next day i kept my sunglasses on even inside
but i went to do the tourist stuff before we drove home!

I had follow ups with a local Dr
and it was all good - better than 20/20

and now 3 years later still GREAT!

I couldn't find my glasses without my contacts in before!

sometimes in the winter if the air is dry they get dry - but usually just closing them for a few minutes does the trick!

DH was quoted about $3500. for both eyes including all pre and post op stuff.

Is that reasonable do you think?

I had it several years ago. Best money I've ever spent - I can't recommend it enough. Painless, takes about 15 minutes, and the results are instantaneous. It's not a permanent fix though, as I'm now back to wearing glasses for watching tv, driving, ect.. My surgery cost included a free enhancement, so when my eyes stabilize I'll get it done again.

My boyfriend had it done a few years ago and was so glad he did it.. I have been thinking about it but keep chickening out.. I dont have vision in one of my eyes but wear a contact in the other.. Id love to have lasik so I dont have to wear anything but Im too chicken cause Im afraid if something happened than I wouldnt be able to see since I can only see in that one eye as it is now..

I had mine done a year ago. Yes $3500.00 sounds about right for everything. I agree with everyone when they say it's the best money I've ever spent. It is kinda freaky that you can see what is going on, but it happens quickly so you really can't dwell on it.

I had mine done almost 3 years ago. I was over 20/400 before. It cost $2200 for both eyes. They did tell me straight up that they could not fix both my distance vision and my reading vision unless they did one type on each eye, but I've heard of people who get dizzy when they do that with contacts. I chose distance and boy am I glad I did! No more straining to see the clock radio right next to the bed in the morning! Trees have branches again! And for reading I just buy the dollar tree reading glasses.
The only thing that freaked me out was that I smelled something burning...and it was my eye! But I got over it fast when I could see on the way home! DH even watched on close-circuit in the waiting room.

Make sure you have them check your insurance. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They took almost $800 off the cost because they had a deal with BC/BS.

Great for me as well!! My eyes were done about 3 yrs ago, and it was around 7-800.00 $ per eye I think. It was the most amazing thing to sit up in the chair and be able to read the clock on the wall in front of me!! I rememeber it said 10:15 .
Never had any problems, except for dry eye, but that was an issue before lasik, actually it was 1 of the reasons for having it done ( other than the obvious.) b/c we couldn't find a contact lens that was comfortable.
It was a very easy procedure, done in 15 minutes. It was an unusual experience, can't say that I'd be thrilled to do it again, but it wasn't painfull at all, just ........weird. .

I had this done a little over four years ago. It was the best money I ever spent. That amount sounds right, but what all does it cover. When I had my surgery the cost covered the pre-op tests, the operation, post-op checks at one day, one week, one month, three months, six months and one year after surgery. It also covered one adjustment, if needed (I didn't need it). I have 20/20 vision now and prior to the surgery I could not read the big "E" on the chart and I had an astigmatism. My recovery was a little longer than some because I was under the laser for a longer period of time. My opthamologist says you can't even tell I had surgery on my eyes.

Just like everyone else it has been the best thing i have ever done. Extremely nearsighted with astigmatism and wore glasses since I was about 7 years old I am now 42 and had Lasik done about 3 years ago. They were not able to fully correct my astigmatism but I hear they are able to do that now. I just wear glasses when I drive the freeways at night and before Lasik I could see close up and now I can't see things close up, I have to hold them away at a distance. I sometimes wear cute little reading glasses just for reading, but at the lowest power. The make them in the cutest frames. I will have to have a touch-up surgery done in a few years but to be able to wake up in the middle of the night and see accross the room without putting on glasses is priceless. I was so nervous when I went to have the surgery and they gave the patients a Xanax for anxiety but there is nothing to be afraid of. There is absolutely no pain and it only takes a few minutes. It really is a breaze. You won't regret having it done. All the best to you.

You can get it done at 20 but as far as I know NO insurance covers it.

I had Lasik done 5 1/2 years ago. I was legally blind with mild astigmatism. I am now at 20/20. I agree with everyone else--it was the best money I ever spent. I love not having to deal with contacts, or glasses. I could never feel comfortable swimming before lasik--I either wore contacts, and couldn't put my head under; or I wore glasses, and couldn't find the pool without them.

My eyes took longer to adjust than I expected. I was 20/50 the day after the surgery, but I had expected immediate 20/20. I spent about 2 weeks thinking I had made a mistake, but then, I realized I could see very well.

I do sometimes need the lowest power reading glasses (if my eyes are tired, or the light isn't good), but the Dr. told me to expect that because of my age (43). I also sometimes see halo around lights, particularly if the if it is very dark.

I had no pain either (great drugs they use). My eyes did water alot the next day, and I had some really impressive bruises on the inside of my lids.

Hate to be a killjoy, but it is surgery. It sounds like all the DIS LASIKs have been great successes. If it's not, it ends up at this website. Sometimes it can't be fixed.

I'm horribly nearsighted and have never considered changing the shape of my cornea.

Lasik is GREAT! I had it in 1998 and can still see well. I use low-power glasses for working on my computer, but that's it. Like NCRedding, I was legally blind without correction with mild astigmatism, but now am about 20/40. I don't NEED glasses, but they make computer work easier on my eyes. Plus my enhancements are free for life!

Things can happen from the surgery, but statistics show that it is less that 1%. There are a couple of new proceedures that are much better than the original LASIK. I believe one is called "intra-las"? And then there is laser cornea. Your doctor will know what's best for you.

Also, don't go with someone just because they are cheap. Go by the number of proceedure that particular doctor has done and his/her success rate.
