As part of a 3 centre vacation in January 2005 we have just booked to stay 4 nights at the Luxor. :jumping1:

Would welcome any hints, tips, comments good, bad or indifferent. We are stressing out already about not having enough time to see everything! We are used to having tranfers, passes etc all thrown in and this is flights and accomadation only. How easy is it to get around? What sights would you recommend? Places to eat? :chat:

Thanks, Elaine.

The lunch buffet in the Luxor is excellent. Make sure you look around all the hotels on the strip especially the Venetian (go on a gondola on the grand canal), the Aladdin (with it's shops where it rains every half hour or so!!), Ceasers Palace (and the shops) and the Bellagio. Treasure island is good too. Make sure you see the battle ship show there at night and watch the Bellagio dancing fountains.
If you have time a helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon is a must as is indoor skydiving.
Oh and with the monorails and strip buses it is really easy to get around.

We stayed at Luxor in March 2002.

We really loved it. I would not hesitate to stay there agian, although I mightr want to try something different next time. If you are staying in a standard room, by all means, request a room in the pyramid! Very cool.

Las Vegas is very easy to get around. Everything on the strip is walking distance (but leave yourself some time). If you are heading off strip, get a taxi. Much easier than trying to walk somewhere unfamiliar. We didn't find the buffet particuarly spectacular, but it was a great bargain. The cafe near the casino is open 24 hours and had great food and was open 24 hours. If you have the extra bucks, see the Blue Man Group's show!!! Pricey, but SO worth it. We showed up in Vegas without show tickets, but we managed to call down on our arrival day and get 6th row center seats. Perfect! The Cirque du Soleil shows are fantastic. There are currently 3 in Las Vegas.

I highly recommend getting a guidebook (we had Frommers) and really looking through. The sheer number of places to eat is mind-boggling. Same with the things to do. I would look through very carefully and decide what most important for you. I also highly recommend renting a car and heading to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area. We had an amazing day there.

If you have any other question, please let me know!

This is a great thread! We are throwing around the idea of going to Vegas for the first time in about a year. Im trying to take in as much info on this as I can. I love hearing these opinions.
We are leaning toward the Luxor, Aladdin, or New York New York. Everything looks so nice its tough to decide.

The rooms at NYNY and Aladdin are TINY. Also, I found the staff at the Aladdin rude and unprofessional, so much so that we left. I have heard a lot of negative comments about the Aladdin from locals we know as well. Sometimes you can get the Venetian pretty cheap through Hotwire (listed as a 5 star on the strip).

For dining, we always go to Mr. Lucky's 24/7 at the Hard Rock Hotel. The watermelon ribs are to die for. They also have a steak and shrimp special - steak, grilled shrimp, baked potato, and side salad for $7.77. It's not on the menu, you have to ask for it. If you are there Monday through Thursday, they also have a special menu from 1AM - 4AM with big discounts. For a nicer dinner, we loved Emeril's New Orleans Fish House at the MGM. The service and food were great. Emeril also has a restaurant in the Venetian, but we haven't been there. If you want to look at menus, go to emerils.com. I also found this site for a lot of the "specials" in Vegas:
http://www.vegas.com/restaurant/specials.html

We go to Vegas often, and have stayed at the Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, Green Valley Ranch, Hyatt at Lake Las Vegas, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, Hilton, Rio, and the Westin. My sister has also stayed at Bellagio, Venetian, Excalibur, Hard Rock, Caesars and the Mirage. If anybody wants to know anything about any of these, let me know and I will try to help. Also check out this really funny site:

Camcolt, we stayed in the New York, New York and enjoyed it very much (we had a room overlooking the strip and the Manhatten express rollercoaster which is a must to go on.) I thought the theaming of the casino floor was the best in all the hotels. We also stayed in the Venetian which I would recommend the most if you can spare the extra $$. We were extremily lucky and were updraded to a high roller suite with 4 toilets, 2 jacuzzies, a steam jet shower room, a 10 seater marble dining table, 3 huge TV's and our oun sauna!! It had 8 windows and views over the whole strip!!

What kind of rooms did you have? We were looking at either the Jacuzzi Deluxe at NYNY which says its 400-600 sq ft(not sure exactly how big that would be) or the Resort Vista at Aladdin. That didnt say how big, but the room diagram looked decent. Maybe its not. Thanks for the warning.

Las Vegas---the Adult Disney World, as I like to call it! We go every year, this year twice. We(10 of us) are leaving in 2 weeks and staying at the Flamingo this trip.(I put together a trip for 8 other relatives and friends) We have stayed at Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, New York New York, Harrah's, Flamingo,Bally's and Mirage all at least 2 times. We perfer the end of the strip where we are staying this trip and the last few. We will be seeing the Blue Man Group(Tues. 3/30) again this trip and Elton John(Wed. 3/31). Just try and see inside all of the casinos and all their free shows. The Belliago has a great conservatory if you like flowers. Ceasars has a great fourm shop where the sky changes colors from dawn to dusk and marble statues come to life, and a Disney Store! Be sure and sign up for the players clubs where ever you gamble(this is how you get your comps) and read all the fun books(what different casinos give you) and magazines for great coupons for gaming, eating and tours. If you ever have time besure and do a Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon tour. You can find great rates in the magazines. Get plenty of sleep before you go, because you'll never want to go to bed, as LV comes to life after dark! LOL!!! Good Luck!!!!

We are heading to Vegas and The Luxor as well staying from April 17th-21st. First visit for me and 2nd for hubby. I can't wait!

We are seeing Celine Dion and am torn between The Blue Man Group and Cirque 'O'...

I hear the shopping is good too?

My hubby wants to rent a Harley and go to the Desert but I have my doubts about going along...hate busy roads to get to the Desert.Looking forward to hearing all the tips..

Elaine you can do a LOT in Vegas in 4 days:D I am certainly not an expert, but I can tell you that Luxor is beautiful and fun. If you stay in one of the rooms with the pyramid side, you will take an inclinator rather than an elevator(lift;) ) You can walk a lot of the strip in Vegas. You'll probably want to take a shuttle to the more concentrated area of the strip(my recollection is that Luxor is a bit off to one end). You'll see a lot walking the strip.

Blue Man Group was really fun, and now you can see Elton John at Caesar's:D

After the bad service at the Aladdin, we left - before we were even able to get into our room. The "locals" we know would not recommend it to their guests (which is probably why the hotel is in bankruptcy). Our friends stayed in a standard room at NYNY, as that was all that was available. They said it was barely 200sqft. If you are booking a Jacuzzi Deluxe, you should be ok. I concur with danauk - NYNY is a cool resort overall. Great casino - my husband won $225 with one pull at the quarter slots on our "mini-honeymoon" (we were married at Mandalay Bay, reception in suite at Four Seasons).

I have also heard that the Hilton Vacation Clubs are nice, and one is at the Flamingo. They often have good rates, so that is worth checking into.

There are shops everywhere. The Forum Shops and The Desert Passage at Aladdin are fun. We always go to the outlet in Primm (there is a shuttle from NYNY) to go to the Williams Sonoma/Pottery Barn outlet. There is now a new outlet near downtown that is very nice as well. Here's a link:

If you have a AAA card, and show it to guest relations, they often have discount books. Macy's at Fashion Show Mall has a discount card, you can pick it up from your hotel's guest services or in the gift wrap department at the store.

i stayed at the luxor a couple summers back with my mom and grandmother. i loved it ! the hotel alone is so gorgeous. i am not a big gambler but i loved laying out by the pool most of the day and taking in the shows. we stayed in the pyramid so we had a stand up shower , no tub. and the room isn't very big but its also slanted. and the elevators go up sideways lol. have fun on your vacation :D

While you're in Vegas, you HAVE to see the fountain show at Bellagio! It was my absolute favorite part of the entire trip and it's free!! Totally incredible, to say the least. The fountains are the size of THREE football fields (in length). We also really enjoyed going to the top of the Stratosphere, as far as touristy things go.

We spent five days in Vegas in November......I wanted to stay at the Venetian, hubby wanted the Luxor. We got the Venetian for 75 bucks a night through Priceline (only 4 stars that come up are that or the Bellagio) and got the Luxor for 69 bucks a night from their website rate. That said, we found the Luxor old, dated, and a little dirty. The inclinators made me motion sick, and the floors just seemd a little dirty. The Venetian was the picture of class and elegance.

I've stayed at the Luxor every year since 1995, the last time being December 2003. We find it to be great. The Egyptian theme is dynamite, the shopping is great, especially since the new shopping center opened up between Mandalay Bay and Luxor (it connects the two hotel/casinos). Luxor is also connected to Excaliber, which is connected by pedestrian bridges to NYNY and the Tropicana. NYNY and the Trop are connected by pedestrian bridges to the MGM Grand. You can walk for for a very, very long time without having your feet touch the ground. :)

We've only ever stayed in the Pryamid at the Luxor, I've never had any kind of motion sickness with the inclinators. You just traveling at an angle (standing straight up). Most of the floors have been totally redone with new carpet, beds, even the tile in the bathrooms was redone.

Have a wonderful time!
