Large emergency room bill

If you are referring to me, I didn't say that. I said my employer, the state of Kentucky, gives me $500 in an account for healthcare expenses. People who waive coverage actually get more. $2100 I think. Then I can contribute to a separate account. The money from the state can roll over. The money in the account I contribute to can only roll over $500.

Definitely make sure it was billed correctly. We had a similar thing happen a few years ago. Late on a Sunday afternoon, my husband was working on something outside and cut his finger pretty badly across his knuckle. He went to the ER for stitches. When we got the ER bill, it was way higher than we expected. When we contacted our insurance company, we found out that we were being charged the out of network costs because the doctor was out of network and he submitted separately from the hospital. We argued that we went to an in network hospital and should not have to pay out of network costs. We ended up not having to pay any more than we originally expected. It just took multiple aggravating phone calls. The hospital was difficult to deal with and in no way helpful. Eventually our insurance company took care of the situation. DH said next time he's just going to crazy glue his finger and skip the hospital.

On another note, if the billing is correct, just call and and talk to someone about reducing the cost or payment plans. Some doctors and hospitals will work with you, some won't. It never hurts to ask.
