So I question. I have an HP laptop that supposedly the motherboard melted inside the computer. What brands of laptops do you think are good? Any suggestions?

I am going under the assumption that it is no longer under warranty?

Personally I have a macbook and love it. This is the only laptop I've ever had so I do not have much experience with other laptops. But I know these are also quite pricey, so may not be what you are looking for. (It was a requirement for my school).

I like Dell and HP laptops, but I don't know if you want to go HP again after your bad experience. I suggest you check out Dell and see what you think of them. They are inexpensive and seem like good computers. Don't hold me to this though, because I am far from a computer person.

ACER is the second largest computer brand in the world, and they have really good, inexpensive stuff. They don't have stores, so you can check out newegg.com and pcusa.com, and tigerdirect.com. If you want, send me a pm with what you are wanting to use your laptop for and your budget, and I can send you back some models and information for what would be good. My boyfriend owns a computer place and he likes to dork out like that.

Good luck, computers are always scary purchases.

That happened to my HP laptop a while back. I say just get it fixed. HP took care of it and I had it back within 2 weeks. I honestly find HP and Dells to be the best for laptops. (I really don't like Macs) But no matter what, most of the time something will eventually go wrong with any computer.

One of the main reasons the motherboards melt in laptops is a lot of the time, people accidentally cover the cooling fan and cause it to over heat. Try not to let it sit in your lap where it could cover the fan. Also buy a cooling fan :) They're pretty cheap

Do NOT get a Dell laptop. They have extremely short life expectancies and just don't seem very well made.

Only get a Mac if you know how to use one already. Despite the commercials' claims, the OS is really not that user-friendly. But they hardly ever break and don't get viruses. Also consider the fact that a lot of software is not compatible with Macs. You will be out of luck trying to install any of the software you used with your HP.

Honestly, I'd say go with another HP. I currently have one and it works great. My parents have had an HP desktop that has worked great for about five years now. I'd say it's the most reliable Windows-based computer brand out there.

I just got a netbook (Dell ), I got it for a real good price (Free) when we got our Comcast Triple Play. Otherwise I would of bought a Asus.

pros:
smaller ( easier to carry around )
longer battery life ( some up to 9-10 hours on one charge)
wifi built in
keyboard is often 90-95% size of normal keys, typing on it is not a problem as long as you get a 10.1" model. The old 7" netbooks, typing is a huge pain.

cons:
small screen (10.1 inches)
not good for games, video editing, photo editing
no cd-rom drive

I would into a ASUS Eee PC or an Acer on amazon.com

you can buy a decent model for $325.99 (Acer)

It depends on what your going to use it for, but if your trying to same some cash and mainly what it for internet, might want to consider that

Another good brand for a laptop or netbook is "Lenovo" (Thinkpads)

good luck , Im waiting still, I got a pending letter , eh . we'll see

Ill second that dell makes horrible laptops (probley netbooks to, but price was right)
my buddy has one and hes missing about 7 keys from the keyboard, happened within a few months of buying it

My brother has a low end HP laptop. works well but does get REALLY HOT. He has a fan we keep under it when you use it, helps alot, otherwise cpu might overheat (still possible) , but it also runs alot slower

just noting, Best Buy has Compaqs, HP owns Compaq and sells a low end model that runs around $430. Even the software you get on it says "HP". I was looking at one in a store when I was looking for a laptop

I have a dell inspiron 1525 and I absolutely LOVE it!!!!! I highly recommend it plus they come in pretty colors haha mine is yellow :thumbsup2

I highly recommend a mac if you can afford it. I've had my macbook for about four years and have only had 1 or 2 very minor problems. My favorite part is that when something does happen you can physically take it to the apple store and talk to someone about the problem and have it resolved quickly (both of mine where done in less than an hour if that) instead of waiting on hold for hours and then speaking to someone who barely speaks english. I've found that the customer service is just so much better with Apple than any other computer manufacturer that I have dealt with (dell, HP, and gateway).

As far as learning the mac operating system, I found it incredibly easy. To me, everything is right where it logically should be unlike a lot of stuff on PC's. Also, if you're having problems adjusting Apple offers free classes in-store on a multitude of topics to help you adjust.

Most software does have a mac version but you would probably have to buy a new copy as the PC version wouldn't work.

Thank you for all of the advice... I am definately not going with an HP again!! I know that is for sure

What? Macs are extremely user-friendly, IMO. I was a PC user for 18 years until I bought a mac for college this summer--I adjusted within a day. Everything just seems to be designed more logically, and now when I use a PC I just get frustrated. All of my friends with Macs say the same thing. Plus they're sleeker, faster, etc. Even my 46 year old mother who has a hard time with technology prefers my mac to her HP laptop. And most software..you really don't need. A lot of software has a mac equivalent, and if you're doing the CP I'm assuming you're in college, and your college might have discounts for computer software or even computers (I got $50 off my macbook and $30 off of my iWorks software, which is similar to Microsoft Office). Your only real problem with a Mac is if you're a big gamer on computers-- but all I play is the Sims 3 and they make it for Macs, so I'm good. :woohoo:

but yeah, I definitely recommend a mac if you can afford it. If you're in college, I'm pretty sure that the price is $950 for the white 13" macbook (normal price is $999). Not much of a discount, but it certainly helps!

I want to get a mac but I already have photoshop for pc and thats what I would mainly be using my laptop for... well that and school stuff lol

I've used a PC my entire life(I'm 24, been on a computer since 1989 when I was 4) and switched to the Mac OS last October. It took a very short period of time to "get it." You learn how to do things when you stop thinking like Windows and start thinking simpler. On top of that, Windows is just copying many features of the Mac OS anyway.

I agree with the person who said get a mac. They are far more efficient over a period of time. After a year of use, a PC suffers a noticeable decrease in performance. I push my mac to the limit every day and it doesn't even hiccup. I also don't have to have anti virus, anti spyware, and firewalls running at startup, which use system resources.

Since I have a job that requires Windows, I boot Windows in VMware fusion, or can boot directly into windows by dual booting. I use Windows for work and mac for personal and because of that, Windows stays clean and fast and so does my mac. It's the best of both worlds IMO.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I dislike Mac's look and design, and do not think it is user friendly. And this is coming from someone who is quite computer savvy. And software really is a problem; it's not just games.

photolove19, don't close the book completely on HP just because you had one bad experience. One bad apple does not mean they are all bad apples. Like I said in my last post, my parents have had an HP Pavilion desktop for four years and never had any major problems with it.

Acer is a great brand as well, if you don't mind something that doesn't look as sleek. And honestly, it's not a bad idea to look at custom-built PCs at a small local chain. Sometimes you can get lifetime service guarantees when you purchase a computer from places like this. If you buy a computer from, say, Best Buy, be prepared to pay exorbitant prices for repairs by the Geek Squad, etc. Honestly, $300 to de-virus a computer and install new anti-virus? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me...anyway, that's besides the point. :P

If you want someone to match your needs with the laptop best for you, try this website:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

This website has hundreds of reviews on notebook computers, and if you fill out the questionnaire in that "What should I buy?" forum, the resident computer geeks will line you up with what they think will best serve your needs. They set me up with the laptop I ended up purchasing, and they were completely on the mark! Give it a go.

Hope that helps!

I had a Dell until last year when it crapped out on me. Three years after I got it. And I hated it the entire time. Once you put anything on it, it ran ridiculously slowly.

So last year I got a Mac and am absolutely in love with it. It is so easy to use. It just makes more sense. And honestly, it's not actually that different. I use mostly Photoshop and Office on here (I have Word for Mac) so it's true I don't have any of the games or anything.

When I would try to run iTunes and the internet on the same time on my Dell, I just couldn't do it. The computer basically stopped working. Now I can run a ton of programs at the same time and not have a problem.

Go with MAC!

I recently bought an HP. My mother's ex is a computer wiz and told me go for an HP (Compaq they are the samer people), Toshiba, or Sony. He also said don't buy anything that is American made, they build them to break fast and that their parts are really expensive. You could also get that same computer that was messed up rebuilt by looking in the yellowpages for local computer shops. It might be less; I had a a Toshiba and my sister's dog threw up in it and fried the motherboard. It was only 175 to get it refix and now my mother uses it. I have an HP G60 series it's better for computer game expericence.

Macs are definitely the best. I got a macbook pro for $200 because my old macbook kept breaking (it was definitely defective hah), I could've gotten a new free one or a better one for a little more. I looooooove it!

Hey guys,

I have the Dell Laptop. Whenever I start it, suddenly it hangs on. What's the matter ? I have scanned my laptop with the antivirus too but there is no virus found.
