Laptop Locks

I was wondering for those who lock up your laptop at the resorts what do you lock it up to. My dd is bringing her laptop and I wanted to lock it up when we are not in the room. Thanks.

I always stay at the Value resorts, which all have a wire shelf above the bathroom vanity. I weave my cable lock through multiple tines of the shelf before attaching it to my laptop.

I believe that all of the Moderates also have these shelves.

I would never lock it to any piece of mobile furniture, like the table or chair or the bed. Just lift those pieces up and the cable slips right off.

Thanks so much for your quick response. That is such a great place. We have not purchased our lock yet. Could you recommend a good one and where you purchased it. Thanks again.

This may be slightly off topic, but I thought the rooms all had safes. Isn't this true? Why not put it in there?

They are not big enough. They can hold only small things like the size envelope.

Maybe I see Disney Wolrd as a place that is to perfect.

I got my laptop and never locked it away without feeling insecure about it...
Am I wrong thinking nothing can happan at Disney World... I might be a little naive there :rolleyes2

Slightly off topic.. is there free wireless access in the resorts? I'll be at POR. Thanks!
Heather

It isn't very hard to cut a laptop lock even with one secured with a strong cable. I would suggest putting the laptop in the bell service location at the resort you are staying at.This would be much safer and you wouldn't have to worry about it the laptop "walking off".

Plantlady, as far as I know (as of last September) you have to pay for your wireless access. I can't remember the price.

I have stored my laptop in the wall safe at the Pop Century. The safes are small there, but it fit perfectly (with a bit a space left over for a wallet and a camera without the case). It would depend on the size of your laptop and the size of safe for the various resorts...?perhaps larger at the moderates and deluxes?). The resort should be able to tell you the size of the safes. :wizard:

We have been to WDW twice with laptops and never locked them up. Although we are DVC members and we don't get mousekeepers as often as the other resorts. But we have left them out on the table and never had a problem. We will be bringing it again this year. I hope it's not something that happens often (laptops being stolen). :confused3

We just simply placed our two laptops in the back closet of our 2Bdr villa at SSR and everything was fine... However, we only had people come into our room twice during our 9 day stay so that also makes a difference.

2 years ago we stayed at ASMv and I was able to get the laptop to fit snuggly in the actual room safe. Looking at the lap top now its amazing how this baulky thing fit in there :)

We left our laptop in the safe. Fits fine. I have a 15.4" widescreen so if you have a 17" it might be a tight squeeze. I wouldn't rely on a cable lock. They are mostly a deterent in open spaces. It'd be easy for someone to cut the cable especially in a room with a closed door.

Internet is $9.95 for a 24 hr period.

We only used our laptop 1 night on our 10 day trip. Don't think we'd go through the hassle of bringing it again.

Last time i just stored it under the dirty laundry in a drawer. This time I may try the safe. I don't use for anything but cleaning off memory sticks.

Theft is a rare thing at the WDW resorts, but I have always thought that it's better to be safe than sorry.

Yes, it's not terribly difficult to cut through a laptop security cable, but it's the same concept as The Club - it slows a thief down, and requires a thief to carry bolt cutters in order to get through the cable.

Pop Century's safes are designed to hold a 15" laptop, while the safes in the other resorts are not. However, some smaller laptops will certainly fit in room safes.

There is no free internet access at any Disney resort. All of the WDW resorts now have wired high-speed internet access in all Guest rooms ($9.95 for a 24-hour period), and some of the resorts have wi-fi access in the lobbies and common areas, also for a price.

What about getting a lock for one of the suitcases and keeping it locked in the suitcase while you are gone? I guess the entire suitcase could be stolen, but it would probably be highly unlikely. Also, then nobody could actually see the computer.

Maybe it's me, but I think the last place on earth I would want to take my computer is to Disney! I'm there to vacation & have fun, not work & play on my computer.

I notice from this board that a lot of people take their laptops to Disney. What do you do with them there?? I'm not trying to put anyone down for bringing their computer, just curious. Of course, I'm an accountant and sit in front of my computer every day at work - I want to escape from it at least for a week or two every year!

I believe Coronado Springs has something different. When I called and asked about this maybe 2 years ago (it's likely changed), I was told Coronado was the only resort with in-room access. I had a friend who had to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel over at (gasp) Universal because he needed in room internet and he didn't want to stay at Coronado.

As someone mentioned earlier I also mostly bring it to download the days' photos.

I like to see how they turned out and can't get a good image on the camera itself. Also, this means I don't have to worry about running out of memory on the stick.

I take mine to download all my pictures from the day, and I type up what we did for my trip report. DH takes his because he takes online courses and he won't be on vacation that week from the school. Also, he has to be available in case anything goes wrong at work, but there's a small chance of that.

I completely agree with you. I look back and think it was a waste of space to pack my laptop. We brought it to watch movies on the plane (in case the TVs didn't work) and to download pictures. We did neither. The laptop sat in the safe everyday except 1 when we sprung for internet to check personal email and what not. It was my computer geek boyfriend's bday so internet was his treat. I wouldn't bring it again.
