How old was your child when you let them have their own laptop computer, or how old were you when you got your first computer???

We just bought my son one for his 14th birthday. I'm older so I was an adult before I had a computer. Thinking of getting my 12 year old one for Christmas but not sure yet.

Wow soooo happy to see your post!!!! DS is 12 too and wants one so bad. I'm thinking of getting him one for Christmas too but just not sure.

my 6 yr old basically has my laptop. They have them in her class at school as well.

We got to the point where everyone was battling for time on the desktop. :lmao:

So far it's worked out well. DS14 picked it out and is pretty computer savvy. Just apply the same rules to the laptop as with the desktop as far as filters and everything and make sure you son knows you'll be checking the history often. :)

I gave my 10 year old my old laptop.

Yeah I wish I didn't buy my dell laptop in purple/pink with blossom flower print on it... I could have given him mine.:surfweb:

Both kids are good on computer. They learn how to use them in school so young now and that's fine, they can teach me a thing or two.

I do let them go on internet now and he knows I'm monitoring...:3dglasses
He's been asking for one of his own for a while now.

My two kids have one they share. They got it last year for Christmas. They turned 10 and 12 that week. I wish we had gotten them one sooner and I wish we could afford the cost of having one for each now.

My 15 year old got one for Christmas last year. My 14 1/2 DD will be getting one this Christmas. I didn't get a laptop until about 4 years ago. Before that it was a desktop.

all of my kids have laptops, two were 8 when they got them and one was 6 when she got hers. They are all in a dedicated lap top program at school.

My 12 year old is still waiting...and he'll be waiting for a while. :) He'll probably get his own computer when he goes to college.

Until then, he can use the family computer. :)

I was 24, married, and a mother before I had my first computer.

I was sick of the fighting over my laptop, so I took advantage of the back to school sales and I bought one for my 10 year old daughter and one for my 6 year old son. They were only $300 each. When I considered how much a Nintendo DS was, it did not seem so bad. My daughter has used it for school. (I still have to get her MS Office though.). As for my son, it works great for helping keep his behavior on track. He loves earning computer time. I am happy with the investment. :)

I was 30 when I got my first computer!:rotfl2:

My son was 14
Daughter just got a netbook for her 12th birhday.

As a graduation gift from high school. Up till then they used the family computer. We got our first computer in 2000.

My daughter is getting one next month for her 10th birthday.

I got one when I was 18, the summer before going to college. So, the summer of 2006. I used some scholarship money to buy it.
And I need a new one... it's sad when my iPod has more memory than my hard drive on my laptop.

DD 13 and DS 10 do not have laptops yet. They share a pc that is downstairs in a corner of the front room. DH and I have thought about getting DD a netbook for Christmas, but we are on the fence. We trust DD, but feel it is much safer for the kids to keep their computer in a visible location where we can monitor their usage.

College. Prior to that the shared the family computer.

My dd was in 7th grade and the cyber school sent a laptop, It is only used for school work. THe desk top has had fare too many key boards replaced for me to worry over that with the lap top.

Also my first lap top I allowed the kids older, to use and a DELL it ended up with hinges snapped, keys sticking or not reading, The mother board replaced once, the hard drive twice, the DVd no longer worked,

It was not at all durable as the desk top. I did not worry about it falling off a chair, a cord yanked out of the back, over heating from no cooler under it.

I can not see ever getting a lap top for her until college time. Other then the home cyber school use only as now.
